After 3 years, I am heading to the dyno on the 5th
itzgoten replied to mr jdm's topic in Nissan 4 Cyl Forum
Bah! Go figure.. I was assuming it was going to be a bent valve. I honestly felt like that was going to happen since the chain broke. I wouldn't have the know-how or balls to take on a job like that on my own. I'd just replace the valves and have the machine shop do the work. Keep us posted man. I really hope your car is back on the road soon. Would be a crime for such a great car to be hidden away in a garage. -

Which is completely logical to me. Let me know how it goes! -
Crappers! I wish you told me sooner. I just went on a 1 hour trip north from me to grab a block and crank just now. I'm going to have to rebuild. So that motor you're showing me is like the FWD Sentra motor? Because I see the CAS/Dizzy is in the back, opposed to the front exhaust side. Well either way the head I spent a lot of money on is already done. But if you can PM me some clear cut examples of the heads and my gains? I always assumed I couldn't use any other head except the S14 SR head. I've had a SR since 2004 but never really built one inside out. I just found out about the S15 timing chain cover/oil pump and grooving the main journals to use the GTiR main bearings instead. I think this time around after I send my block out I'm going to see if they can do that for me so I get better lubercation for the crank. As far as parts.. I might need to replace my lifters (since the new ones I have were covered in metal shavings and I don't want to risk it) and rocker arms. Thanks again!

Are you sure there is no valve damage? It would really suck to have a valve drop off its stem because it mushroomed on contact with the piston and wasn't replaced. I'm surprised.. Kind of agree with SleeperZ.. Sounds too good to be true. I would just say take any precautions you can to make sure you're 100% sure. If that is the case though.. you're one luck guy. -

Mr JDM, I don't drag only take it to the track (road race). I was out there and spun a bearing after the build so now I'm back at square one. I'll probably take it to the drag one day just to see what kind of numbers I run. -
Hey, I felt the same way when I saw your post. Super clean build and very similar to mine. About the VVT head. My tuner high advised AGAINST it. Yes you can make power but he said that they are known to fail over the s13 sr head. But I guess that's expected when you have more "features". I know I can make a little less power than you with my last build. When I rebuild it back and get the motor broken in I'll be able to see what kind of numbers I can make. I'm sure I'll be around your 500hp mark as well. My main thing is that I do NOT want to run higher than 91 because this will be my daily and I don't feel like going out of the way to get e85 or 100.. Thanks again for the props.. too bad you're so far away! hehe

Well I'm hoping it'll just be a few bent valves? Also praying that the pistons didn't get damaged.. On a different note.. I own a Miata too! I guess people who like certain cars will have similar taste. I've had a s13, Miata and the Z. -

Great to see you found your problem. Sucks that it's the frggin chain. Did you break or bend any other components? -

that still doesn't make 100% sense to me.. what about things like timing and fuel duty on higher boost.. I have my numbers for 10, 15 and 20 PSI.. I'll see if this equation works for me. nice to have a good approximate though.. -

just curious.. how were you able to conclude those numbers? Maybe I can learn something new? -

i know exactly how you feel. I've been in those shoes. Hope you figure it out and the problem isn't too bad. Very nice numbers though. 500whp doesn't seem too far away. g/l -
yes.. just the stock grill

good luck bud. Let us know how it goes! make sure to take videos and pics! -
Just as luck has it. I called a guy today and he had a spare block and crank for 250.. and complete head for 200.. so that's saving me a lot of money.. we'll see what BC says when he gets my shipment.. I'm pretty sure I'm going to hear "all of your parts are shot to $*!t and you'll need to replace them all" Cams are like 350 1 Rod about 120 New Pistons w/ rings 560 Then it's just a matter of sourcing the right size bearings which is no problem. Mission, THANK YOU! You totally know where I am coming from. This is a NO BS build. No wasted $$ on unneeded parts. And the Takata harnesses are the perfect example. That's engine $$.. no useless bling needed. I wouldn't have gotten the NRG but my fatass can't get out with the roll cage unless I remove the steering wheel. I do like nice things but I'm not impratical. They call me Mr. Functional because if it doesn't make the car faster, balanced or overall better.. it's not going on the car. Granted I did spend some $$ on a paint job (inside and out) and I got a nice steering wheel and gauges.. but I use it everday and didn't want a ratrod style car. You are absolutely correct. I've gone too far now so no turning back.. And if I had to count total dollars spent.. I'm way past 35k already from start to finish.. and since the new SR I have not paid a penny in labor and almost all parts are at dealer price or discounted. It's the final stretch and I'm determined to make it happen.. We'll see where I'm at in a few weeks.

Yea, tell me about it. As I said earlier.. I totally regret selling my perfectly good SR. If I had kept it I would have put that in instead and driving that around. But since I sold it.. I'm SOL driving a Ford Excursion killing all of my gas...
-
Matt, Sad to say I sold my perfectly working stock SR making a clean 250hp on stock everything w/ minor bolt-ons to fund this build. I'm going for as much HP as possible. But I don't want big HP over night. I'm going to try for a good 400-450 for a year then go e85. Before my setup blew my tuner said I can make an easy 500 w/ advanced timing (we left it relatively stock so it can break in). So I'm sure I'll hit 500-550 with what I have.. And I'm praying for a lot more HP when e85.. when I'm ready and the engine is broken in and kinks worked out. My old motor was CHERRY and bought in Japan and cut off and sent to me. It was a low mileage motor owned by an older person. Took me 6 months to get.. but that is said and done. If I could have gone back in time I wouldn't have sold it knowing that this would happen. Either way I'm proceeding with the build. I'm going to replace whatever broke and I'll try again. Updates in a few weeks
-
Gollum I know Matt wasn't "attacking" me. But to tell me not to build it kind of sucked to hear. At this point I'm too invested to turn back. So if I had to spend another thousand I guess I will. On a lighter note.. I sent out my cams, pistons and a rod. Going to see what deal I can get. A guy at Brian Crower said he'll work out a deal if the parts aren't repairable. Let's hope I get some good news
-
Matt, I see where you are coming from.. But here is my point of view. First and foremost the person building the motor is me and my brother. With the support of his shop for space and time everything I am doing is on me. If you read the posts without the pictured you'll see me explaining that this is my first build and I am learning from this build. Am I a mechanic? Hell no. Heck, I don't even like getting my hands dirty. I just like to drive and race. So if there's anyone to blame then I would be the one. Second, everyone makes mistakes. I've read many posts here on HBZ where their SR build went bad. I'm just humble enough to post mistures and admit my ignorance and lack of experience. I could have just not posted anything and pretended it all alright. But guess what.. That's not how I roll. Third, this isn't being built "for fun" I have fun driving but I plan on racing competitvly when its all done and the Z will be in the GT1 class racing againt porsches, ferraris, vettes and even some vipers.. Will I win? That's another story. But I would love to try. Young asian kid racing with a buncha old white guys. LOL Lastly, if I didn't do this then I wouldn't feel accomplished. I could have slapped this twin scroll mani on my old stock SR but that isn't what I wanted. If I went on everyones post bashing their dreams then these type of forums wouldn't exsist. That's just like everyone saying. "Why go SR when you can just put a LSx motor in it?" Because I don't want a shitty LSx I want my SR. So why ask why. Better to inspire others or not say anything at all. I've read your posts and you know your stuff. But at the end of the day I'm not you. If you did 500+ on pump gas then sweet. But on 91 here I've never seen a SR do over 400 without blowing. The tranny can't even handle 400hp. And I beg you to show me a stock internal SR doing 800. I am doubtful. Anywhere else I've read the SR will do about 400 stock at best and I'm aiming for 600+ on e85. But I gotta make 400 without blowing before I can make 600. And I kind of did take offense. I'd hope for words encouragement instead of words of doubt.

I had my tuner look at it sand he didn't even let me finish.. His immediate answer was "new block" Ultimately it comes down to "do you want spend all that money if it blows again? Or you just want to do it right?" And from where I'm standing I don't feel like doing all of this a 3rd time.. New block it is!
-
I don't recall any damage to the main caps at all.. I'll go back and take a look again.. you think with that much damage on the journal it's still salvage able? I'm just skeptical.. maybe I'll have the machine shop look at it and see what they say.. thanks for the input. I'll get word back in a week or so after I send it out.
-
I wish I could say the same. Seems like I plan it once and buy it a few times.. aurgh.. I did my exhaust 3 times already. First time the exhaust "gave up".. internals would rattle when you give it gas.. go figure when you buy crap off of ebay.. So I went and got a high end muffler and resonator.. and the 3rd time I decided to go full v-band with my new motor setup.. If I had a L series I would have went your route too.. but for what I have it's not an option

and I just realized you have a fairlady! Way better chassis just beacause of heating issues and the BMC.. I had to do all kinds of heat prevention since the BMC was next to the turbo.. very cool car -

I HIGHLY recommend the 2nd pump.. I'm running a Aeromotive 700 and I still had fuel issues.. I have a very similar setup to yours.. but .78trim twinscroll manifold.. I was able to hit 432hp without messing with timing too much (because I still wanted to break in the motor).. 500 is definitely possible. My tuner said when my motor was broken in I could make 550 easy at 24psi.. Good luck! And I hope you decide to run the dual walboros.. you'll lean out for sure on just one pump. -
So I finally had time yesterday and today to tear the motor down. We pulled the motor out of the car a few days ago and it just sat until I had some time.. This has to be one of the more "painful" posts because is does not feel like progress.. but still felt like I should share what I learned from my mistakes.. we pulled the fenders, headlight buckets, flares, etc AGAIN.. I'm getting the feeling that my car rather have no front end.. LOL also took off the FMIC turbo mani, intake mani pulled out.. the worst part is the turbo mani.. everything is "set" because the dump tubes are welded together so essentially it's 1 whole piece.. and space is limited.. getting to the v-bands sucked.. ripped her heart out.. so depressing.. heartless.... motor sat a few days.. and then deconstruction begins... the tear down was just bad news after bad news.. the cams are scored and I can't use them anymore. I guess I'll just need to go and get a new set.. I'm going to try and see if I can salvage the head. I spent a bunch of money on it with the head work, port and all.. the journals are slightly scuffed and maybe a half mm size scratch.. I'll see what the machine shop says. The head had some metal flakes in the oil and the hydraulic lifters were "caked" with metal shavings.. I didn't take any pics of the head torn down because my hands were dirty.. but heres the oil pan.. NASTY I pulled the pistons out and you can see the #1 rod (on the right) is badly burnt.. the crank looked that bad too and here you can see the discoloration on the crank as well.. the journals on the crank is scored to hell as well.. bah! and the bottom of the block you can see on the #2 journal on the block that the spun rod bearing backed out and made it's way into the main bearing and sored the block real bad.. the block is done for as well.. so all said and done at the end of the day.. this is what I'll end up needing.. block, crank, 1 new rod, piston rings, oil pump, cams and I'll see if i can salvage the head. if not then I'll need a new head have it ported (again) and also have the exhaust side milled +1mm over because the exhaust valves are +1mm FML!! total fail.. I guess you build and learn.. first motor build ever so this was expected.

@surfer.tech.. I looked up the exhaust.. pretty penny INDEED! WOW.. My setup only ran me like half of that.. its super authentic and nice though.. wonder how hard it would be to source the Spirit Garage one.. it was difficult to search up.
