Jeez Tim....you're mean j/k
I'm with John C on this one though. Sure you want it to be fast, etc, etc, etc. But taking the time do it right is more than worth it. Bodywork, suspension, then brakes is how I went, but it was a somewhat backwards approach. Now the final step is fast Good luck on whatever you decide. Maybe even post some pics of this Z thats been sitting forever.

Ok, after talking to James a bit for the other day, we were discussing the RB25 as a possibility for a motor swap for me. He couldn't remember if I'd need custom mounts or not. The RB25 is a direct bolt up from all I've read. But after searching and searching, nothing seems consistent as far as motor mounting or tranny. Apparently, there is a stock position and the position as far back in the engine bay as possible. Which of these require the custom mounts...or do both? I hear Brad or someone on here sells them. What is the final word on these?
Also, for those of you who have gotten a RB series motorset, how lucky were you? Did you get stock I/C, fuel pump, working turbo, etc.? How clean? Mileage? From who? How much custom fabbing (besides the obvious) was needed to get things to go in the right places? Thanks for your time.

Nice work James...
I'm going to have to come over and check things out.

wigen,
Who is this Pallnet that you speak of? Have a website by any chance?
So we're looking at about a grand more with an aftermarket ECU for the L28ET swap. This still doesn't answer the question of...which would you do?
Topless,
The whole problem is finding someone to do it. I don't have the time/no how/tools to pull off any swap. And no shops in my area seem to have reasonable prices on swaps. Wish I could pack up and move to Cali.
-
Well I should be able to get a full intercooler kit and custom fab it to fit my Z for around that same price...if not a little more.
-
Having second thoughts about the SR20DET swap (partly because no one seem so to really want to do this swap for me). I've taken a look at the costs of both swaps, and for some reason it seems that I can get more bang for my buck with the L28ET swap. Take a look:
S13 SR20DET - roughly $2K for front clip
Greddy VSPL Front Mount intercooler - $750
Walbro 255 fuel pump - $125
GReddy 3" Downpipe - $150
HKS SSQV BOV - $215
Greddy Profec B Spec II Boost Controller - $325
3" Custom Exhaust - $250
Clutch - $360
Around $2K for install
Around 900 in custom fab work
Total (roughly): $6800
200 lbs. in weight reduction (engine weighs less)
Producing around 260 rwhp
L28ET - $1795 (remanufactured, I just don't feel like rebuilding)
Turbo - GT32 or GT25R from http://www.speedshopthagard.com/ - 700 to 1000
Same intercooler, fuel pump, BOV, and Boost Controller - $1415
Downpipe - ? I'm guessing custom 3" for around 150-ish
Engine management - ? could try to stay stock at first? or...ideas?
Fuel rail(JSK) w/ 450cc injectors(RC engineering) - $640
Bigger throttle body - $235
Already have fairly new exhaust and clutch - free
Around $1000 to $1500 for install
Total(very roughly): $6300
No weight reduction
Producing...well...I have no idea, but more than 260rwhp.
Thoughts? Ideas? Factors I've forgotten? I want to use this setup for autocross eventually. I know the weight/setup of the SR20DET would be idea for this, but the bang for the buck with the L28ET is so enticing and I think I have someone who would be willing to do the work for me.

They seem pretty pricey, unforunately. I talked to XAT Racing down in the same area (Tampa) and their prices seemed a little more reasonable. Of course, I haven't compared the prices as of late (this was months ago). I'm getting the engine bay painted this week. After such time, I will actually be ready for the swap (I should have sufficient funds). I don't know who will do the work for me, we shall see.
-
I plan on getting this swap done to my '82. I have the deep enough pockets as it is now...but not the know how. And I can't seem to find anyone who wants to take on such a swap in my area. Kinda sucks
-
ehh...i love mine
-
how hard was it to mount that boost gauge inside the dash? thats exactly what im looking to do when i get my SR swap done. i like that kind of setup.

simply amazing.

I was kinda of looking for a new laptop of late. I work at Office Depot and had a deal on a little Averatec. We only had one left and I talked to the boss and he said he'd knock off 50 bucks for me...bringing it down to $600. I'm like...I'll take it. So I walk out there to take the sign down...and a customer is waiting there. He goes...I want this laptop. I'm like...****. So I sell it to him and tell the boss about it. He says...don't worry...I have a deal for you. Someone had bought 2 laptops. A Gateway and a Systemax. They returned the expensive one (Gateway). However, the idiots I work with forgot to check the box. The customer had ripped us off by returning the Systemax in the Gateway box. Long story short...he said he'd sell me the Systemax. It had everything included. Here it is:
Stats:
512MB DDR RAM
40 Gig HD
DVD/CD-RW Drive
Wireless 802.11b
Celeron 2.4 GHz (only negative)
12.1" screen size
Only weights like 4 lbs.
And here's the best part....only $250!!!!
I love it!! I will probably be tuning the Z with it a little after I do my SR20DET swap. It'll also help tune my friends Saturn that was just hooked up with nitrous. Sorry this is so long!

Hmm....as far as the raised look in the rear goes, it used to be a lot worse. I have aftermarket suspension (Moog springs, Tokico shocks/struts, urethane bushings) and it was so tight, that the rear does appeared raised. It's settled a little over the last year or two. I kinda like it, but the wheel gap does suck. Maybe bigger rims?
Pictures taking at Panama City Beach....very close to Destin Sand is practically the same in both places, hard to tell the difference.
As far as the videos on my site, yes...I record and edit all of them. Have a pretty decent Panasonic Digi Vid Cam and edit with Adobe Premiere. Fun stuff Should have some vids up of my friend's Saturn that just added the spray to his list of mods. Stay tuned!

Well, finally got the tension rod in the Z and decided to take it out and snap some pictures of it. Invited Kenny(Z32TT) to come along, but he BSed some excuse (something about his ECU was shipped off for reprogramming....blah....sounds like some fancy horsesh*t to me). I think they turned out pretty good. If you want some hi-res, just let me know.

Is the repair kit really worth the time? Which auto parts store did you buy your rebuilt caliper from? I just want a caliper that gets the job done without paying a billion dollars...
-
Well the brakes on the Z have been acting up of late. Locked up the parking brake the other day, etc. Mechanic says it's time for new rear calipers. Does anyone besides MSA and VB carry the stock replacement rear calipers for a '82 280ZX? They are running $120 a caliper + Core I've also seen this caliper repair kit for sale. Does anyone know what all this entails? Thanks.
-
this is true...i was only traveling at 40 or so MPH. If I had been going faster...it would've been like that time my brakes went out while traveling at over 50 MPH.
-
Well...having had my tension rod snapped near the end (like many others with urethene bushings), I can say it wasn't an "Oh my god!" experience. I hear a snap, a clang clang. Then when I went to brake....it pulled...hard! It also took out a small chunk out of my fiberglass side shirts, but not a noticeable amount.
As far as them being rare, for the 1st Gen. Z's, getting them doesn't seem to be a problem. Nobody makes them anymore the ZX's though, except ZBarn...and those are used.
Finally, if you have urethene bushings and are worried about such an event occuring, either go with a G-Machines setup (mines on the way) or as zxtman said, keep them well lubricated. Pivoting is key

I agree with you Nismo. j260z is an awesome guy. We got everything squared away. His check is on the way....my part is on the way. I love this place
-
j260z,
If you could do that....I'd owe you big time Let me know how it goes. Shipping on that can't cost more than 10 to 20 bucks. I'll pay for everything. Thanks again!
-
still no tension rod
-
I didnt find any links or web addresses for G-Machine as a company. They are a pretty big vendor for VB though, seeing how they have a lot of G-Machine parts.
Back to the tension rod, and what TomoHawk has iterated. Finding one in a local junkyard may be a problem for me, not many Z's in my area. If someone has connections to a junkyard in their area and could help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated (I'd pay you for your time). But if theres a company out there or shop or someone who still makes the part, it'd also be a better route. Thanks again for everyone's time. I'm beginning to miss my Z
