  1. Hi, I have purchased a 280z 2+2 pressure plate, clutch disc, and t/o collar. The 2+2 parts are bigger i am guessing. i have a 260 2+2 with a 280z 5sp ready to go in and was wandering does the 260 2+2 have the larger diameter flyweel like the 280 2+2. and if not will the 2+2 pressure plate fit

  2. Hi, I have purchased a early style 5 speed (not borg warner) trans for my 260 2+2. I didnt think there was any difference between the 5 speed and 4 speed drive shafts, but when i looked in my manual and the 5speed has a flange on the end of the trans not a hole like on my 4speed. Can i take off the flange and slide it out and use my orig drive shaft or do i have to get a 280z 2+2 drive shaft.

  3. Ok guys check this out. I have been reading the board for ideas on how to fix my prob and i read about some one clamping down the return line to get enough pressure to carbs. Well i did the double send line thing but not much of a difference well anyway i tried that clamp thing with a pair of vice grips and now the fuel STOPED foaming in the filter between the tank and the pump, BUT now it will suck the filter dry if i let it idle for a while or if i drive it hard(i get to the top of 2nd and then the car cuts out hard). And when i clamp the return line down my fuel pressure goes up to about 4psi. When i had the return line open i only got about 1.5psi and i have a NEW 5.5 to 9psi pump but i am only getting such a small ammount of psi at the carbs. I try to set up a chart of probs here!

With Return line | Without retun line

Foamy fuel filter | Steady fuel filter

Car stalls out because | Car stalls out because

pump is sucking air | pump drains fuel filter

Pump is very loud | Pump Just hums quitley

    1.5psi | 4psi

Hope That helps you guy think!

Its seems like when i run with the return line it pushes air into the tank causing th filter to Bubble or "foam". But when i eliminate the return line the Filter is steady and so is the fuel srteam but it doesn't push (or pull) enough fuel into the filter and for that matter runs dry when i give more than 25% throttle. Could this be my fuel pump? Would a high volume fuel pump fix this.. I mean it seems like the pump just cant suck enough gas. Is it the tank vents? Not enough air pressing on the fuel inside the tank.

Geeze! Who knew solving probs with z cars could be so much like playing Clue! :weird:

  4. Its a stock 260z tank so it has vents. I even left the gas cap off to see if that was the prob and it still did it. Iam going to see if i can do the dual pick up thing. One from stock location and one from the drain tap. I ll see what that does and post it!

Stupid fuel system, Imean gas has to get from one side of the car to the other HOW HARD CAN THAT BE AHHH!! (Pulls one more hair out) :ugg:

  5. Geeze my fuel system does the same thing!!! And no the return line cannot be used to send fuel to the pump. It just ends at the top of the tank where it comes in. I had changed pumps because my other one had gone bad. And now i have pulled all my hair out trying to get a steady flow from the tank to my carbs. When i stab it it either drains the float bowls or falls flat on its face and it barley makes it up hills!!! I fed the lin into a gas can and the fuel seemed to pulseate out of the line not a steady stream. I have got it fixed as best as i can for right now, i have the fuel comming from the tank drain instead of the stock send line. So al least i can drive it to work now. I have done every thing i can think of even boiling and cleaning trhe tank out. I am fed up with this fuel system crap and i am very close to buying a D fuel cell some expensive high volume pump and all new fuel lines and pump wiring. Ive got about 2 hairs left. Its been awhile since youve posted so Have you fixed it Yet????

AHHHHHHH I HATE MY GAS TANK!!!!

Better for target practice i say

  6. The owner of the z shop i work at has some really nice set up su's the he has on his Street stock class 240z. 2.4 280z cam and has a guy in california build his heads real nice and still mannages to get 220 hp at the engine. My 2.6 Tripple 40mm mikunis headers 2.5" straights gets 197 to the wheels. And his is easier to tune!!! But like before most people today draw a blank when problems come up with their su's and more people work on holley single carbs. They all can make good power Just get the one u work the best with. I know more about mikunis then ill ever know about su's or holley carbs.

  7. When i said 90 degree 5/16 fitting i ment the NPT was 5/16 the thread size is 1/4. Its easier to find a 1/4 thread to a 3/8 NPT 90 degree wich also works. The drain plug has 1/4 size threads so no tapping just screws right in! And yes you would want to use a fuel filter before the pump for obvious reasons. The plug is located (if u are looking at the rear of the car) front right bottom of the tank so its very easy to put in with out dropping tank. And just run a fuel line straight from the new NPT to a filter then to your pump. AND MAKE SURE U BLOCK OFF YOUR OLD SEND PORT ON THE TANK!!! I forgot and gas came out!!! Just take a 5/16 fuel line and insert a 5/16 or 1/4 blocking cap and clamp in down. Ill take a pic of it to show u my installation. Good Luck!!!

Any Car parts store carries the fittings

  8. Well i fixed it as good as i can for now. I took off the drain plug on the right front of the tank a screwed a 5/16 90 degree brass fitting in its place and ran a fuel line from there to the pump and damn if she doesnt run good!

I put the 2.5-4 psi pump back in and drove her around and no more atalling in trraffic and pulls hard through the gears. To give you an idea ov how bad my prob was when i drained the tank by turning on the pump and running a fuel line to a can the fuel would pulseate out of the line instead of a steady line of gas. It took about 25 min to drain 6 gal of fuel. Sheesh! Well thx guys.

  9. Geeze mikunis are fun arent they! I have triple 40mm on mine and i noticed when i turned up the fuel pressure at my regulator the carbs smelled like gas. I turned down my pressure and no more gas smell except when i stab it! To much fuel pressure could be one of the things. Your pilot jets could be tuned to rich. Do you have a return line or are you running dead into carbs? Mikunis are very sensitive to fuel pressure, are you running a regulator before the carbs? Whats your fuel pump psi rating? The max pressure for my mikunis is about 4.5 psi give or take. Also does the engine produce a rich mixture (smoke) OR does just your carbs stink? Its easy to start guessing what the problem is. Check your fuel pressure with a low pressure guage, 1-10 psi, right before the carbs and tell me what that is. Check before you spend the $

this is very fixable and i know your pain. My girlfriend would let me park the z inside because it smelled like gas so bad! When i drove with the windos down it burned my eyes!!. Well check back with that fuel pressure

  10. Well i have spent some money on this tank trying to get it fixed and still no results. I droped it had it cleened and boiled. i even blew off the filter sock off the end of the send pipe. That helped at least i can drive it around. If i let it sit at idle for 3min the car chokes and dies and when i drive it in traffic same thing. I am going to test the system to see if it is the tank or not causing the problems. I will just take the send line, disconnect it from tank and put in a gas can. That way if it runs good i know the tank is crap. Also as i said before i am running a 5.5 to 9 psi pump but i am only getting 2 to 3 psi at the carbs! The gas cant loose that much pressure. Its sucking air instead of gas because something is block the feul flow in the tank. the car "hicups" and the fuel filter is always almost empty. Looks like ill be looking for a new gas tank!

  11. Hi, I have narrowed my problem down to the tank. My 260, triple 40 mikunis rear pump only with regulator before carbs, started to "jump" when i gave it gas, not enough fuel getting to carbs, so i changed out my rear electric pump and filter from a 2.5-4psi pump to a 5.5-9psi pump and now it sucks all of the gas out of the filter between the tank and pump. There is just not enough gas getting form tank to the pump. Is there some kind of in tank filter getting cloged or somthing? I have taken my carbs apart and changed out everything in fuel system and sprayed lines and jets with compresed air. The only thing that has not been serviced on the fuel system is the tank.

  12. Hi, Sorry about all the posts but if the fuel pump doesn't work i cant drive. I got a new eletric pump For my 74 260 and installed it today. i hooked up the wires and the pump doesn't even turn on, no power. The problem is that the lead wire, 12 volt power source, is not connected to a 12 volt power source. The wire from the pump to the body harness is connected, but after that i have no idea where that wire goes. i do have a wiring diagram but i cannot follow it. I need to know what powers the line to the fuel pump and where its is connected. Is it on the fuse box. or can i just run a line from the pump to a 12 volt power source, need a list of items with a 12 volt power soucre. I need help badly and i have had justt about all i can take of that wireing diagram.

    Thx,

    Josh.

  13. Well well well... I love it when mechanic shops rip you off. When i took my car in for a rebuild in 1998 on the parts list was "New Eletric pump----85.95" I guess they didnt think i would try to eleminate the mechanical pump at the front for triple carbs. Like i said the carwouldnt start so i go to check the eletrical fuel pump AND IT WASN'T EVEN CONNECTED!. It gets better..... Ok no prob right just connect the fuel lines...NO... It was the ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP! Not the "New" one they said they installed and charged me for. Well anywho i hooked up the fuel lines to the eletric and still no gas. the wires at the pump are connected, But where do the wires go to so i can make sure they are connected to the body harness. Thats my main question.

    Thx,

    Josh.

  14. Hi, Well just after i get my 40mm mikunis on my 260z installed i go to crank the engine and it turns but wont fire. So i try to stay calm and i figured i would check to see if fuel was getting pumped through the lines. i disconnect the fuel line at the metal fuel line at the engine and turn on the ign. No fuel at all was comming out of the line. Is there a fuse in the fuse box that controls the fuel pump or would cause it not to work. crap iam so mad. I am pretty sure the fuel pump is allright. its was installed in 98. So i am pretty sure this is eletrical.

    Thx,

    Josh.

  15. I am not sure what the cable goes to but its leaking. Heres a picture.

    513654_40_full.jpg

I need to know what this part is so i can replace it. :?

I think its the speedo cable. Also my speedometer doesnt work so maybe thats what it is.

    Thx,

    Josh.

  16. Buying a whole new carb a manifold can get expensive if you want good carbs. Not to mention the price of triple or multipul carbs, i just bought triple mikuni 40mm with manifold for $1000 from todd walrich at wolf creek racing. The 40 is the size of the carbs air tunnel. Usually 40, 44, and he rare 50. The l28 need more air as it has bigger displacement, but the main thing with getting approate air/fuel mix is proper jetting . Z therapy sells a whole su carb kit for about $600, and it comes with every thing you need. I myself dont like su's. They do run good but thats my opinion. Now If you want a set of some mean carbs contact todd walrich at

    Twalrich@wolfcreekracing.com

He'll asnwer all you questions about all the different carbs for the z car.

tell him you talked to josh watford, he'll have a laugh.

anyway good luck with the car. try to post you car on cardomain.com

  17. Hi, I am looking for some 2.5" black exhaust pipe to make a custom exhaust system for my 74 260z. I have been looking at web sites for hours and i am finding a lot of plain stainless steel, but i need black.

    Thx,

    Josh.

  18. Ok, ill run the stock fuel lines up to the firewall then ill replace the line from there to the regulator because they are very rusted as they sit under the battery.

Ok now the only question i have for the set up is how do i run the return line? do i have to and what is the purpose?

    Thx,

    Josh.

  19. Hi, Iam in the process of installing triple mikunis and takind off extra weight, a/c, ehaust that sort a thing. Anyway i have to run the set-up like this.

    Tank---Pump-----------Regulator----carb----carb----carb.L.fitting

The stock fuel system had two lines. One went to the mehanical pump then to carb and the other one went straight to carb.

Could i run a single fuel line from the pump to the regulator or does the stock pump at the tank need two fuel lines.

I would put some pics up but i cant figure it out right now

    Thx,

    Josh.

  20. AAH screw this stupid twice pipes system. I tried for hours to get the dam things on right and they wont even hang in stock locations. The muffler hits the tire. I have had them in my garage for not even a month and they are getting rust deposits allready. Tried to make some custom brackets to hang muffler in the middle like i said, but i just could'nt get it where i wanted it. Damn muffler doesnt want to be on the car i guess. i didnt bend the pipes so i sent it back. I got a better idea thou. Buy some 2.5 inck exhaust tube and run it right out the middle with a 30 degree bend upwards before the tank. Nice and loud. Kinda like the bre car but bent up like old alfa or ferrari. But first i got to put all new fuel lines in. Got some rust under the battery that rusted the fuel lines also. I just got the msa 3n2 headers on right now and umm... its just a little loud. I was thinking black powder coat on the end of the pipes would look good. any way thx fof the help.

    Thx,

    Josh

  21. Yep i think ill go with the color tune then ill take them down to sunbelt to have to perfectly. Good thing about todd walrich is he pre sets up the carbs for you. just give him the engine spec and he will put in the approate jets size and tune preaty darn close, really just needed a idle adjustment. thanks for the input. ill get pix of the bad boy on the car as soon as i can,

    Thx,

    Josh.

  22. Yeah i had the same problem with my 260z 2+2. i took the car out after about 5 years of no running and it got really jumpy. turned out the gas from sitting in the carbs for so long had broken the parts down. i got a real rich mixture. I just replaced my su's with triple mikunis and the car runs better than ever. Like datsunlover said if you got fuel inject then "limp" when something is amiss with the ecu. If you got carb like me check the coil and connections and if the car running rich it will jump and smell like gas and smoke. i dont know what else to tell you
