  1. Has anyone used the JTR small block mount kit for a big block chevy? In theory it should work, BBC has the same mounts and their the same distance from the bellhousing, and use the same bellhousing as a SBC. I've been searching for a couple weeks on various sites and youtube, using google's reverse image search with pics I found of BBC's in Z's hoping to find a build thread, so far I've found a few builds with dead pictures, and one that still has pictures but they aren't too great. There are a handful of pictures floating around of the motors sitting in these cars, the heads clear fine, but I'm trying to figure out what exhausts people are using. Maybe a stock manifold from? If theres anyone here who's done a BBC swap I'd like to pick your brain and see how you did it. I'm very aware this throws off the 280z's weight balance and makes it nose heavy. I hope to offset that a bit by removing the A/C system and moving the battery to the trunk, I have no front bumper either. However I have no plans to autocross this car, just cruise and light up the tires, and a little stoplight to stoplight drags so I'm not worried about weight balance or hooking up (that'd just tear up the U-joins and R200 diff anyway). I did search plenty, and absorbed a lot of info, I'm just hoping I can hear from someone whos done the swap and find out if the JTR SBC kit would mount a 454 in a 280Z and what you guys are doing for exhausts. Other than that, I've got the bases covered. just need to fill in the gap a bit. Heres some eye candy I've found on the interwebs,
  2. Alright guys, those of you who actually put in input to the question, thanks, I read over the JTR site and missed the part about ordering crossmembers, I saw T56 but didn't see T5 listed until now when I went back to the site. To all you jackass's who think your hot shit, take a ******* hike. If your not gonna post anything helpful, write your comment on a piece of paper, tape it to a 2x4, and shove it up your ass. I'm a damn good mechanic and I've done much harder jobs. But I don't have my welder its in storage because I'm moving and if theres a bolt in ******* piece, I'd rather find it buy it and use it. Just because I don't reinvent the wheel doesn't mean I'm not competent to do such a thing. And to the people who commented I should use the search function (and didn't talk a load of shit), I know, I've been on a lot of forums. I've tried searching for T5 swap but T5 is too short for search criteria, I searched a few other terms and didn't turn up much, but I appreciate the links. Thanks guys.
  3. Forgot to mention, I have a buddy who just built a brand new garage, and guess what he put in it? Thats right, A LIFT! Whoooo nice to have friends. This is the same friend who I bought the Datsun from and the trans from.
  4. Hey guys, my Z is a 4 speed and I bought a 5 speed from a friend (same friend I bought the car from he had plans to swap it in). I've searched and researched and sounds like the 5 speed will just fit right in with the clutch flywheel and driveshaft for a 4 speed. I just wanted to verify if the 4 speed shifter, trans mount, and slave cylinder will all work with the 5 speed also? I can't remember if my 5 speed came with a mount but I know it is missing the shifter. The car is a 76 280Z, if that makes a difference. Not sure which Z the 5 speed came out of, but definitely not the turbo ZX. Also, I haven't had a reason to really slide under the Z yet, does the Z use an external slave cylinder that pushes a throwout bearing fork, or does it use a hydraulic throwout bearing? Can I just unbolt this slave cylinder without disconnecting the line and bolt it back up to the 5 speed? I've never bled a clutch before and would like to avoid it if possible. Thanks guys!
  5. MSA only has the parts for a Turbo 350 trans. I just dug deeper into JTR and it seems they do sell a crossmember for a T5. Does anyone know of a build thread of someone using a T5 in their build? I'd like to see how it fits and how they did the clutch
  6. Hey guys, I've been looking to putting a 350 in my 76 280z and I have a buddy with a low mile crate engine for cheap. The only thing keeping me from doing the swap is the fact that I can't find any swap kit parts or information (yes I used the search function) on using a regular 350 small block and a manual transmission like a Camaro T5. Plenty of info on LS1/T56 builds and plenty of info on 350/Th350 builds. Does the shifter not line up or something? Trans tunnel too small? No driveshaft parts? Why doesn't anyone swap in a classic 350 small block and a 5 speed?
  7. ahh, good to know. Now I won't feel bad if I pull the new tires off em and buy different wheels. Their pretty cool but not my kinda wheel.
  8. Hey guys, these wheels came on my 280z when I bought it from a friend of mine. So far I've had 3 people tell me these wheels are rare and sought after and blah blah blah. I tried looking them up but don't really know what to call em but personally I haven't seen them before. Their on my 76 280z. Anyone know if their actually worth anything? Or atleast pretty rare?
  9. The Procomp PC 2031, installation instructions here http://www.procompelectronics.com/instructions/images/PC2031.pdf so you can see how it hooks up. it looks like it should work with any car that has a single coil? I assume it works by cutting power to the coil at a certain RPM. In theory, I should be able to wire it through a switch and set the limit low (like 3000 RPMs) and use it as a launch control mechanism of sorts. Does this make sense? so, A) will it work in general as a limiter with the 280z's ignition system and can I put a switch between one of the wires from the box to the car (like between the coil or between the box's ground wire) to activate the limiter when I want.
  10. Hey guys, one thing I've always wanted to do is a 2 step launch control rev limiter but I've never heard of it done on a Z with the stock ignition setup. Has anyone went about doing this? What part(s) did you use? Did you wire the launch control to a clutch pedal switch or a momentary switch on the shift knob, or similar? I don't mind converting to MSD or what have you as long as I'm not paying $500+ to do it. I'd like to keep it all under $200. I don't mind buying used parts if someones selling their setup (this isn't a wanted add I'm just putting this out there while I'm putting up the questions). Thanks guys!
  11. I've got a friend of mine who'll give me a hand if I ask. I've helped him pull and install the motor in his VW Bug a few times so I'm sure he wouldn't mind helping me put a trans in the datsun. We'll see how it all goes, I'll put a build thread soon enough and the tranny swap will be part of it. I haven't bothered putting a build thread up yet because for the first time ever I literally haven't had to do anything to the car to drive it so I've been busy enjoying it, unlike all my other cars I've bought in the past
  12. Good to know, I've manhandled a 1952 Dodge Coronet transmission around before so if thats all the Datsun's weighs I should be able to do this pretty easily I'm a strong guy. I do a lot of work on cars so I've got an assortment of jacks and jackstands and ramps and such, I have a fear of being crushed so I take that stuff very seriously. I wish I had a lift but I'm just glad I have a paved driveway. Working in gravel SUCKS So what would it be like to drive the car with the current rear end, and the 5 speed out of a 77-78? Would it be worth it to swap or should I put it on the back burner until I get a matching rear? The rear is making knocking sounds going over bumps and when you shift (suspension clunk) so eventually I have to dig into that anyway. It has all new bushings and such except the mustache bar bushing so I think thats where the problem lies.
  13. Good to know, thanks for the info. So I shouldn't need to change my gearset or rear diff? Hmmm. How can I tell if my car is a Federal model? If need be do I just bypass that switch and run a straight vaccum line? Cool, I know its not out of a turbo car so it should be a bolt in. Sounds like it won't be more than a day long job. I don't have a transmission jack though, which seems like it'll make it a bit of a pain in the ass to swap. I have a floor jack and a motorcycle jack though, so I'll just get a bit creative.
  14. Hey guys, I bought a 1976 280Z from a good friend of mine whos had it for as long as I've known him and finally sold it to me (for a good deal too!). Anyway, It runs and drives great but its only a 4 speed and a lot of the driving I do is 60+ MPH and I can really appreciate a 5th gear for highway use. He also has a 5 speed out of another z-car and I'm getting that from him. My question is, do I need another driveshaft, or is that the same between the two transmissions? Also, do I need a different clutch/pressure plate/flywheel or is that all the same between the two transmissions? I'll be ordering a new clutch either way, just want to know which to get. Can I pretty much just yank this tranny, and put the other in or do I need parts from a 5 speed z car? Thanks! Also, I'll get more specific info from him ASAP but as far as I know, its a 5 speed out of a 1975 280Z (thats the other car he had but stripped due to rust but I don't know for sure if its from that car or if he bought it already pulled from another car).
  15. I daily drive my 1976 280Z. The things I did to make it a little nicer to drive include a grand total of installing the door panels and window cranks, new wiper blades, and I cut the stupid 30 lb muffler off and straight piped it I haven't changed much but since I used to drive a 1973 VW Bug with no working gauges, rotted floor pans, and no suspension, I'm pretty comfy in my mostly stock Z
