  1. Let me set up my chain of thinking here; I have a friend who works as a designer and has a machine that can sew, well, anything really. I do not have an outer shift boot, or a parking brake boot. Leather ones go for like a hundred frackin dollars each. So, what I'm wondering is if by any chance there's a pattern, or an approximate pattern kicking around that I could use to make one, or two, or many boots. If someone has a set of boots they want to replace with nicer, newer, or different material ones (say you have vinyl, and want leather. Or if yours are intact/full of extra holes, but look terrible) I would be happy to have her make a set in exchange for yours which could be used as a pattern? If you really want I'll send the pattern piece back haha.
  2. So, my 87 maxima is dead. Someone took out the front suspension with a nice solid hit and run. I have awful luck with nissans it seems. Control arm is gone, and the cost to have it fixed is more than I can spend. But, perhaps some of the maxima bits can go in my 240z? Are the second gen maxima brakes swappable? Also in this thread if initial topic is a dud, what can be taken off other cars and used on our datsuns?
  3. I looked up what the most effective penetrating oil is, apparently Atf + Acetone works the best, but even so didn't do it. I think I have to buy a better torch for this task
  4. Well, I've come to a few conclusions in the last year. Here's some short form points. Firstly, the thing runs on my blood, not gasoline. I've had cars that I've loved, and I've had cars that loved me back but... Never have I had a car that I've loved that hated me back. I don't mean it's tired, unsafe, unconcerned, or just soulless, but I can FEEL that it hates me. I can tell it's just waiting to drop off the jacks onto me. And consequently I won't go under it unless it's on something it literally can't fall off of (say, a ramp) The thing electrocuted me at one point, by having the rubber on the spark plug boot simply fall off COMPLETELY INTACTand WHILE HOOKED UP not a break in it I can't even fathom how it's possible for it to happen. I mean, come on, what the hell? I found a spot where the bondo was THREE INCHES deep to cover the worst welding I've ever seen. So the fender flares at the back are a completely different design than I originally expected. Found evidence of well concealed accident damage (and the engine doesn't quite sit square to everything else hmm). The PO did some clever rewiring, so nothing works right, and my wiring diagrams are useless. My rust free guaranteed car has plenty of holes in the fender under all that bondo. Every nut and screw I've worked with has snapped off. Including four connected to the front struts (not driving the thing right now, that's for sure) But sometimes, just sometimes I put everything back together, hook up the battery, and I start it up, and god damn it sounds beautiful. Its voice is full of scorn. The PO made this car hate it's owner I think. The fact that he had it parked over 4 miles from where he lived... I dunno, I need to figure out how many people were killed by this thing. As far as actual progress goes, basically none. One step forward, two steps back. Some parts are very shiny, balanced, refreshed, restored, etc. and some I've only found to be in worse shape than expected. The wall in my garage is covered in big sheets of paper with notes, and thoughts scrawled on it. I'm going to collect those at some point and then I'll have to write a books worth of updates.
  5. * Electricity: Make sure the battery is okay. Check the voltage on its posts if you've got a multimeter 1) fuel system: Check for gas as far along as you can when you crank. Replace filters, replace gas. 2) Lubrication: Change the fluids and filters. At least do an oil change. 3) Spark: Check plugs, wires, coil, whatever it is. Make sure you've got a nice spark in the cylinder. Still no go? Do the dreaded compression test.
  6. Sorry to remain off topic here, but I read that as "Do guitarists actually ask the salesman what the coefficient of friction is when purchasing a new air guitar?" as I was thinking about airflow at the time. Which was worth a good minute of laughing. So, thanks for that.
  7. Preferably the turbo model. If you're not sure which you have, the 70amp turbo has LR170 on the case, and the 60amp non-turbo has LR160. Talked to a few people selling them, but all the sellers sort of dropped off the face of the earth half way through transaction hehe.
  8. I've got a 71 240z I am changing from the original coil to this one. I always visit the same Lordco for parts. One of the employees there owns 3 240zs in excellent shape, and knows every bolt widget and tube on every part of every Z. I ordered a coil, and went to pick it up today. He advised I use not the one similar to stock, but the one I linked to. It comes with a resistor, is more compact, and more modern. Sounded good to me. So I took it home and realized I don't know how to hook it up. I know which bit goes to the cap... but that's it. I hope someone can help poor excitable me.
  9. I've always found the 240z to be a jaw droppingly pretty car. At around 21 I was in the search for a new car. The 240z was in the running against several other vehicles. I figured if I didn't buy something I'd really love now, I might lose the chance for a long time. It always breaks my heart to see a car with a soul die. The 240 won out, since then it's been a year of hard wrenching, polishing, and fiddling. For which I've been rewarded with an immense and impressive improvement in performance. Mind you, I'm pretty sure my Z is trying to kill me. I know for sure it runs on my blood.
  10. 1 is connected to the carb 3 is going to 4 and to the balance tube. Should 1 go to the spot on the balance tube 3 is currently going? and should 3 go to the carb where 1 is going? Did those get switched by the PO?
  11. I do have the FSM. I'm waiting for my haynes to come in the mail. The FSM is why i suspect there's supposed to be something in spot #6
  12. Thanks, I just wanted to get the shield off to powdercoat it. I'm not planning to leave it off. I suspect many things are hooked up incorrectly, and I'm slowly working my way through them. So, take it off where it's hooked to the carb, and plug it into the balance tube? I suppose that can help me with one of my little holes.
  13. There are 6 bits I have to ask about. I'm not sure what the green circled parts are, here are my best guesses 1 Vacuum Controller. 3 Throttle Opener 4 Servo Diaphragm 6 Empty spot that SHOULD have an EGR according to diagrams? Do I need any of these? Do I not need any? what should I do with the holes for things I don't need? I realize my air cleaner is currently removed, it just makes stuff easier to get at. As for 2 and 5. I'm trying to get them out, but they are very very stuck, and I can't move them without bending the manifold. Am I missing something here? ATF + Acetone hasn't gotten them to budge, nor has a torch. Is there an elegant solution to get them out? Bonus Question: Can I get the heat shield stuck behind the carbs off without taking the carbs out? Edit: It's a 1971 240z, thanks for reminding me to post this Jeff.
  14. I tried both suggestions. I couldn't for the life of me get my hands or a tool in there to release it, even with the trim off. I tried the lock thing. No good. I ended up solving it by taking a 10mm wrench sticking it in the gap, and unscrewing the latch from the outer back, tedious, but effective and didn't break anything. That said, once I had it apart, I reassembled, turns out I had it the right way but poorly aligned. I could probably have released the latch by pressing the button really really hard. So, quick tips, press the button really hard if you're stuck, then shove the latch more towards the interior edge of where it can mount and screw it down again.
  15. So, my hatch latch is sticky, so I take it out, clean it up, polish it up, give it a quick coat to stop it form rusting reinstall it done. Easy. Too bad my hatch won't open now. I think I screwed it back in backwards... argh So I'm on my back in my hatch trying to get my fingers in a little hole to release something. How in gods name am I gonna release it? Please tell me there's a secret. Some time has gone by since I first closed it (I didn't check right away) and I can't remember how it's laid out.
  16. If the brakes pump up okay, I'd definitely appreciate it. How much would you like for them and the rad? Answer quick or I'll have to buy online!
  17. Well, I'm going to be way off in KY as of 9am tomorrow, so this is all going to ordered off the internet stuff, but perhaps he delivers? Anyway, thanks for the tip I'll look into it.
  18. Got a biiiig update coming. as well as a few ideas. So for a quick "keep your radio tuned to this station" here's what's going to need doing 1 ujoint 1 radiator 1 all of the brakes 1 set of fuel lines 1 ignition cylinder 800 in labour, and I've got to track down the parts because they're so difficult to find.
  19. What if they were those roll forward lambo doors that end up parallel to the hood? Those'd make it pretty easy to get in. So, we're up in $3k now though.
  20. That'd be too easy of course, I need to figure out a way to overnight him the key. And of course fedex/ups each want from $80-$180 Anyone want my 240? You can just go steal it and I'll send you the key by regular mail -_-'
  21. For those in the area, I got it towed to Community Auto, where a guy named Dan will be doing the inspection/fixup. The problems I know of are a clunky ujoint (not the big one). Brakes go soft after 2-3 second (pump up, and then lose pressure). If he hasn't got the parts in today, maybe I'll try and take someone up on the work offer. I definitely would have checked HybridZ first. Started a topic in ALL CAPITALS and everything! But my laptop ran out of juice on the first night. It's amazing how alone you are when you lose the internet, and cell.
  22. That'd be awesome, will he remember who you are so I can say "my buddy so and so sent me"? I'm not sure it'll work to go with AA since I am on such a short short time limit. Might have to rent a uhaul and a trailer... or maybe just roll the vehicle into the uhaul if it'll fit hehe. It's extra complicated in that I've lost the cash I had been planning to spend on this. You guys are being mondo helpful. Uhaul will apparently run me about $280... that might be my last option
  23. The bill of sale was one of the very few things I still had! I talked to the person at the border and tried to import it then, despite that I was on a bus. I'm familiar with the importation process, I had planned to only have the car live in Canada for about 2 weeks. Thankfully importing cars over 15 years old isn't too complicated. I'm gonna give aa a call right now. thanks for the tip! -edit- aa auto closed until tomorrow
  24. Hopefully I have the worst story of all time. I'd hate to think that someone had theirs go EVEN WORSE.
  25. Well, everything is closed today. So tomorrow I gotta call an out of province insurance adjuster as soon as they open to see what exactly to do about the BMW. Next I have to call all the shops I can get hold of down near the 240z to see if any of them can fix up the brakes and have em swap the ujoint too. If they get it done on monday (same day) I'll head down to get it and bring it home. Otherwise I'll reserve a time at a local shop and see if I can get it towed/hauled here I'll also need to get my parts in the mail asap (thank god I have a huuuge discount at fedex). My time limit goes like this. On the 16th I have to be in Louisville KY. Right now I'm in Vancouver BC. If I drive it in 2 days that's a loooooong haul. In fact, google maps estimates it at 36 hrs. So I had been planning to leave on the 12th or 13th for that reason. We'll see what happens. since all my cards were stolen I can't even buy myself a flight haha
