Read a good post about choosing a head. Braap says he does like the p79 for an builds. It's still tempting to swap the n42 onto the f54, which will leave me with the p79 to build, but I'm just going to stick to my plan. But it's a good thread, so I thought I would post it. Might help someone else sometime, if they didn't come across it in their own searching already. http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/96882-p90-vs-p79-cylinder-head-for-na-31l/ Edit: Some of these parts are rollin in Also .. Heard people swapping the ford 9 rear axle. So I got a pair on ford super duty 10.5/ front 60 .. Thought I would put theses on next, ...might need a litte fender trim but they should be strong and wide. I attached a pic -
I would love one of these Email is project1.00@gmail.com. The sooner the better, can't wait. Do you take PayPal?

Maybe this isn't the right thread to ask, and if it isn't I can just delete the post. Bloz up, If you ran Haltech, what would you run?

Braaps recommendations on where to concentrate ones efforts for building more power from their L6 engine in order of priority 1) Exhaust, Ignition, Induction 2) Cam, 3) Light weight flywheel. 4) Head work. -------------------------------------------- Ok working on Braaps recommendations. The old blown engine IS down to just the motor mounts and ready to pull. Also orders a few parts. What I'm thinking is I'm going to run the mystery motor as is for now, and focus on getting all the bolt-ons and the MS squared away. Then I will build a block and head, I'm think the F54 block and the shaved P90 head. I'm going to use the 4speed trans thats in the car now, and rebuild the 5speed and put it in with the next motor. I have the extra N42 block and head, but after reading so much about the N42 head pinging I would rather just use the P90. I would build the P79 head I have and put the N42 on the F54 now, but I figure the P90 is just the way to go beause of the exhaust ports on the P79. Parts Ordered/ Some I have: - Doug Thorley 6/1 Header. - Abarth new old school full exhaust w/ middlemuffler and endmuffler (I was really excited to get this exhaust, if you have ever heard one, they sound awesome) - MSD street fire box/ coil/ wires. (maybe not going on untill the MS install) - Competition Clutch 13lb flywheel. - 140amp alt and yellow top Next I'll get the intake/ fuel rail/ injectors squared away. Then from there I'll start working on this MS. As far as a cam (Braaps Rec's), that will go on the next motor. This seems like a good solution to me so I can take my time and build the MS and a L28 the right way. It will also be good to have the bolt-ons in place to suport a well built L28 and have some experience with the MS on a stock motor. I'll try and post some pics soon. I read about the flywheel and I went back and forth on doing it or not. Also thought about the 18lb lighten stock one vs. a 13lb or a 10lb. I decided the 13lb was the best for the range I will be building in. Thanks again for all the knowledge and experience. I would have made different decisions with out the help and I had never even heard of MS. Edit: put some pics of the parts, one of the Z as it sits, and one of the motor before much was touched. -
I have been looking at the DIYAutotune site a good bit. If it's ok to PM him from here, do you have his user name. I will order my ms from him. Bloz up, I can see what your saying, and how easily that can be true. The ms still seems like a good bet, especially for the money. dIYAuto might be a good bet. I can see the probles on both sides of the fence. If you keep yor ms simple, it seems to work well for many people, at least that's what I have been reading.

Thanks for the update. I'm new to aftermarket ECU's. I look at Haltech. Edit: I looked at Haltech... not cheap.

Zmanco, Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. It was well writen and organized and it really helped me understand this set up much better. Luke

ok awesome, thats the plan I will start with. Thanks Skirkland, I appreciate your help! Is the tps on the ka24e plug and play with MS, like the GM sensors?
-
I saw some people do that, but I still some people run them ..and some people run two in altitude (have two specific air/fuel mixtures). I'm still learning about ms. Do anyone use any other TB, for sensor reason? Or is there any other factory or aftermarket parts that people have had good luck with for using with their sensors, like the jeep TB above that has the sensors built in?
-
This might be a stupid question, if it is just tell me. I have been reading and trying to understand setting up my frist MS. I was wondering if it would work well to run a jeep TB, then can come in a 62mm bore, and have a map, IAC, and a TPS attached. Any thoughts

Awesome . I'm going to put the complete motor in to get on the road, and build the other. Hopefully works out well. I may swap heads because I think I want to build the p79 head or may just try to find another p79 that has never been touched (maybe the best idea) At the very least, I have learned a ton in the last few weeks, and by the time I have this MS figured out I will have learned a ton more. All good stuff, the silver lining of blowing your motor. -

I'll pull the pan and see. I would bet money it's stock, but it's worth a look. -

Yea, the K cam seems like a weird choice. I wonder if the crank is stamped LD28. If the crank is marked, I can pull the oil pan and look. Like NewZed said, it probably came factory in one of the year ZX. The probably ran out of the C cam and through a few K's in the mix to keep things going. -

I opened Pandoras box and Googled N42 vs P79. I wounder if im better putting the stock n42 head on the F54 block for now. That way I can build the p79 head well. From what I read, the shaved p79 seems the way to go because of the combination chamber and quinch, where the n42 can cause some pinging maybe. Any thoughts? Edit: thought about it some more, I think I'll drop the f54/p90 in as is. And if decide to build a p90, I'll find a new one. Reason, simply because I'm not sure what has been done to this one and it looks worked on in some capacity. I'm probly better pulling one from a stock car in the jy. -

Ryant67, I'm not sure, but I saw that post saying its a stock cam. What block/head combo do you have? -

That's exactly what I'm going to do. Drive this motor and build the other one. I just was trying to decide what head to build and which one to run now. If there really isn't much difference I guess I'll build the n42. If it's worth it, I can put the n42 on the F54 block and run that and build the p79. But it would probably be much easier to leave this motor complete and just build the n42. -

Really awesome, thank you. I found this about the K cam. http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/80392-what-is-a-k-cam/?p=762764&hl=cam%20identify&fromsearch=1 Says the valve lift of 0.3985 and came from a mn47 maxima. So this motor was probably rebuilt with stock parts. -

I saw this page with stock cam letters. http://xenons130.com/cams.html But K was no an option. I read on a thread someone thought it was a MN47 I also read this tread NewZed posted in. But it didn't realli ID the K http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/104231-cam-identification/?&p=974764&hl=cam&fromsearch=1 -

Thanks so much for your replys, I really do appreciate it. The back of the cam marked "K" I think to start, I'm going to order a header, and drop the motor in as is and see what happens. Then try and get MS figured out and maybe a few bolt ons. I am going to use the 4speed tranmission that is there now, it runs well. So I will have the 5 speed and a n42 block and head I can take my time and rebuild well. So I think that's the plan. -

Doesn't look like the springs have multi shims, but they could be longer springs. Idk but anyways, it will probly just remain a mystery. If it sounds like a good plan, i could rebuild the N42 head I have and put it on this block. Then move forward to the MS , exhaust, fuel, and such things. -

The head is powder coated a grey color. Did that look like the factory cam? It was probably woth the $500. I'm going to put it in and see how it does this is probally a better core than the other I have. I may get lucky too and be able to use the bottom end and just build a head. If you could choose, would you use the p90 or the n42 head. I read the p90 is better because the n42 has low quench chambers. I'll check today and look for shims under the springs. The good thing is I have several options to work with now. And I may beable to get the car running while I build a motor. Thanks as always for all the input. It's deffentaly appreciated. -

So tonight I got the mystery motor for $500. Guy just called me, said he would deliver it for 650 if I took it tonight, I told him he could keep the carbs and header and I'll give 500. Block is a F54 Head is a P79. I have the N42 head I can still build. I read a lot of conflicting things on which head is better. Idk. I'm not sure the specs, it's a mystery. It looks to have a metal head gasket. I'm not sure if the head has been ported on the intake side, or if that's stock. It looks pretty decent, the motor is actually power coated, not painted. I can post more pics later but here is what I took tonight. Any info or anything anyone notices is more than welcome. Ps. Sorry about the bad pics -
I have read a few places that the Cxracing h beam rods are solid, light, and priced right. I have never used them myself but was going to run them on the l28 I'm building now. IMO it's worth using good bolts, which you would probably use anyways. I say go aftermarket.
