  1. 2+2=4 Mike, can you say HYRBRIDZ !! 4.6l mustang engine with a supercharger and big cobra brakes. Think the wife would notice the engine missing?
  2. The old archives at ZCAR.com saves my day again, I was having the worst time trying to get my toyota 4 piston calipers, and 15/16" master cylinder going. The pedal would drop half way down then instanly lock the brakes with dead solid pedal pressure. It appears a little piece inside the booster can fall out when adjusting the little rod on the end. New booster is on it's way, little bugger I always seem to find the painful stuff that never happens to anyone. I smacked it still didn't work Here's the diagnosis The problem you describe is indicative of a what I call the "crash pad" falling out from under the plunger which protrudes out from the front of the booster. You must be very careful not to pull on this plunger as the crach pad will literally fall out into the interior of the booster. This pad is simply a rubber pad which is appox. 3/16 inches thick. It acts a cushion between the diaphram vacuum plunger which is attached to the brake pedal and the external plunger. You should always double check the clearance between the external plunger and the inside of the master cylinder piston. There should be no more then .030 inch clearance at rest between the two. The loss of the crash pad causes this measurement to increase to unacceptable levels. By the time the plunger has finally contacted the piston inside the master cyliner, the booster is applying panic braking levels of vacuum assist to the brake system. Ergo the sudden lock up of the wheels. It is not possible to repair easily, Get another booster and be careful with the plunger.
  3. I would definately be intrested, being an acad user and hope to design some custom parts later on. It comes in so handy, when fabricating parts.
  4. CHEAP what a coincidence, my middle first name starts with C I will mabey check with SCCA or RossC to see if it will fit my expectations. I plan on doing some track events, I don't expect to win just have a nice setup that brakes won't die on me. Sparked my intrest !! What do you plan doing with those new big binders??
  5. It's good to have a bit of pride in your project, I have it for my L6, Blueovalz has it for his 5.0l .... I classify my car as a hybridz eventhough it has the nissan L6, with that destictive exhaust note. To me HYBRIDZ is about accepting any thing you want to put in your car to make it fast. To the new people watch, listen and learn, there is so much expertise here it's unbelievable. Understandably the moderators want to keep this a good place to discuss any motor without flame wars. I would advise anyone not to put a K-CAR motor in their Z, that's just wrong . I didn't think it was a big deal, that could have been avoided by using the SEARCH function. This is closed forum graciously run by some very generous people, please respect it and ENJOY I know I do !!
  6. I bench bled the master cylinder, first then did the back and the front. The mighty vac is handy for starting out because it pull the fluid though. I'll store the rubber hammer idea in the tickle trunk, I have used a pressurized bleeder ball on finiky systems before. Looking back on it using Toy calipers on a solid rotor wasn't the smartest move, going to save my $$ for proper package and proportioning valve. I had a great weekend in Vancouver, and stayed right by Kitzlano beach. I got hit by a cyclist at 28km and sprained my ankle, and limped in to a 4:10 time. I was on pace to a 3:30 bummer, oh yeah it hailed on me. Nothing like a 4 girl pajama party to lift ones spirit's after
  7. I have probably done about 30+ brake systems, and the system itself is simple just very pissy. Something that has been cursed by the car gods !!
  8. I have done quite a few things over the years but I swear to god sometimes you just can't win. I had some toyota calipers and a 15/16" master cylinder upgrade. Damned thing wouldn't bleed and proportioning seemed crappy. So I yanked off the toyota calipers and slapped the old ones back on. They had been sitting and the seal blew out, so then I fix that. Bleed with Mighty Vac still can't get it to work. So now I am going back to old master cylinder, but I had to cut the 2 studs for the 15/16" master cylinder. Now I have to find a friggn vacuum booster. For such a simple system it has been plagued with problems. Next year I will do a proper brake upgrade.
  9. Nothing against Honda engines but lets see $3500 for a 1.8L 210hp or $3500 for the RB26dett hmm tough decision
  10. Correct my pathfinder is a V6 so the tranny will bolt right up. The problem is in the pathfinder if you go to bolt on a turbo ixhaust manifold the turbo sit smack dab where the existing motor mount is. On the the 300zxt the right side motor mount is located towards the front which might interfere with the front differential. Mabey when I get some other projects done I will have another look.

  12. 2 things I would check is the igntion box make sure it isn't intermitantly screwing with your timing it will make cranking sound funny and it won't start. Next I would check the terminals in the airbox, I believe there is something in there that controlls the fuel pump operation. Take it out and inspect and test as per manual.
  13. Give us some details on that bad boy, I have an 89 pathfinder and have pondered putting in an 800 300zxt motor in. The biggest problem I saw was the low slung turbo right were the motor mount is. DETAILS PLEASE!!
  14. Off the topic here, but I wanted to say hey to Jeff. I spent 4 months in Borden Ontario Base. It was definately one of the best summer's I ever had. I spent many a weekend in Barrie, I have never seen a city with so many bars. I couldn't believe some of the parties at Wasaga Beach, truly a summer of fun and sun
  15. I had a chance to get my car running fairly decent on the weekend. I discovered a couple of things I had a big intercooler piping leak. I also can't get the 370cc modded Merkur injectors to seal air tight. I made and adapter for the brake booster fitting on the manifold to hookup to an air line fitting. I pressurized the manifold and discovered the leaks. I pulled the caps off the tips of the injecors and used the yellow nylon washers to provide the seal am I doing something wrong??. Somehow I might have to find an o-ring to fit these to try and make a seal. Anyone else have these problems ?? After I got the major piping leak fixed she really started cooking with 4psi limited to 3800rpm for break in. Now it is much more responsive tuning with the DFI.
  16. Dyno sounds good key thing is too keep the customers happy so they like coming back and don't mind spending time in your shop. A little room for coffee with a big window facing the dyno. Stock it with lots of of car magazines and catalogues of what you are going to order. An older computer with High Speed internet would be a nice touch as well. In order to get some use out of the dyno have some dyno shoot outs for the clubs and offer a small discount on the next purchase to the person who gets the most power. This will add some fuel to the fire of those power hungry people. Mabey plan a couple of little clinics for the car fans, this gets them in your shop and word of mouth goes a long way. What I am saying is don't overlook the service aspect of the business. The running store here where I live is like this, and I go out of my way to buy stuff there. Car people like to be looked after, good luck Mike !!
  17. A little Datsun 240z background http://www.totalmotorsport.com/History/display.asp?ID=5
  18. I already used the calipers and adjusted the rod length to just touch the piston socket, on the 280z it is too long when you put it on, and will cause the brake to lock on and not release if not adjusted properly. Something else is up with my little bugger, it is not an obvious track down so I have to go through the whole system again.
  19. You don't find many deals like that Scottie, you must have had to pick that sucker up with welding mitts I always like passing on deals I find , the only other one I found was Mike's Gnose for a low low price . Drag radials would have kicked booty, definately would have been intresting how far the old mill would have done given a bit more time. I guess it's up to the rest of us to continue to legend of the L28
  20. I have super sensitive feet, and still can't modulate the thing even at 50mph I get nothing then bang it almost puts you head in the steering wheel. I am sure something is wrong I am going to have another look, mabey another shot with the mighty vac.
  21. I have a question in my 76 the master cylinder was the dual type. Then I change to the 81 15/16" master cylinder. Is it me or did the front and rear brake lines have to swap postions the way they hooked into the master cylinder. Might have pulled a dumb dumb ??
  22. I pretty much beat this subject to death, do a search with my name and turbo related topics lots of info. If you use cast pistons 350rwhp is your limit, I would suggest sizing your turbo for this limit. The T04E-57mm stage III .63 A/R is what I have and on paper probably the best for the application. It will drop a bit of effeciency at 15+psi but still in good range. I would not recommend .82 A/R on a smaller turbo you are selecting, you won't gain much topend and give up a ton of midrange. Here is the link to a program I made the HP # seems a little low I got it from RC Engineering, the rest of the air flow stuff should be dead on they are from my thermodynamics text book. This will get you ball park and show you what's going on, only dyno and road time can show you the absolute best turbo for your application. http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Shop/1553/trbcalc/turbocalc.xls If press F11 and double click on module you can view the formulas I used.
  23. Super Dan did you ever find a fix my brake are exactly the same. It's like nothing the wham instant lockup. I have 2+2 booster and the larger master cylinder, I had to adjust the pushrod to master cylinder length. It's real dangerous and I have to fix it any suggestions??
  24. Thanks Grumpy I already have Smokey's book, probably should reread I was 16 last time I read it. Would be nice if there was a book focused on the inline six and turbo, even BMW info would be decent. Seems like turbo cam info and combustion chamber design is hard to find. Probably get some ARP bolts & head studs later on, mabey barrier coating on pistons & chambers. If want a revver I will go get a harmonic balancer like John C. One thing I have been looking at is trying to install oil squirters to cool the bottoms of the pistons & possibly designing a crank girdle.
  25. If I was fudging the computer here's what I would do set the spring tension in AFM to give to proper mixture at wide open throttle. Next I would hook in the potentiometer to lean the mixture, but I would hook it through the TPS switch to allow it to bypass lean setting under full throttle. It's a pretty simple switched circuit that should work much better than what you have.
