  1. I agree with all the advice thats been given. I keep several short pieces of copper pipe in various sizes that have been flattened in a vice. They conform to the panels making a heat sink at the point of the butt weld. Remember the lighter the metal the shorter the stitches. You don't want to warp the panel
  2. I've owned Corvettes that flexed enough to pop the left or right hood latch, fortunately they don't blow open when the hinges are in front. Anyone who has ever looked up and seen a hood blocking their vision will swear by front hinged hoods!

  4. MIG machines are usually rated by the thickness of metal they can weld and the duty cycle, or how long they will go at a specific output without overheating. I have used all kinds of machines over the years and I really like the Millermatic 180. With some copper backing, you can weld Z bodies without burning through. If you need to weld something heavier the 180 easily does 5/16 mild steel in one pass. Also you want a machine that will accommodate a range of wire sizes say from 23 to 35 gauge. I totally agree with the get the gas machine comments. Flux wire is only good if you need to weld in the wind. The 180 has an autoset but I find it is easier to set it manually by the sound of the "popcorn". If you hit the lottery buy a TIG!
  5. I am building a small block Chevy '71 Z with a 700R4 and a ZX R200 I am trying to figure out the best solution to a gas tank problem. If I run duals with mufflers at the rear valence the tank is going to conflict on the right side. I can always cut out the spare tire well and put in a fuel cell, but I really like the idea of having a spare tire. I've considered a donut spare with a slightly raised floor. I also would like to retain an outside gas filler either in the stock location or behind the licence plate. Has anyone dealt with this issue, and how did you solve it.
