  1. I don't have the 280z diagram, but this is for a 240z... 1. Backup + backup power to reverse switch on trans 2. heavy red "lights power" to combo switch blue/green were 3. there is a wire called "guage" that is the power for the guages, not the guage lights. use park or tail wire for guage lights. one wire is ground and one power. you can make your own ground. the power wire goes to a reostat, then from the reostat to the gauge lights. 4. I dont have mine wired to msd, but you will need to have a switched ign on wire attached + coil and distributor wire (I think)
  2. Some people don't give a rat's ass about breaking the smog laws. Unfortunately, some of us have to pay for this disregard for the law and health of others because legislators believe that they can regulate these cheaters by enacting more stringent laws. The more we as car enthusiest promote breaking of the smog laws, the more smog laws we will have. Don't take off your smog stuff unless you can make your engine more efficient and pass a tailpipe emission test.
  3. I believe that you will still have federal emission requirements to abide by. Get a stand alone efi and EGO feedback system to get better efficiency and performance.
  4. My old 260z would over-heat (230-260) all of the time. I took the thermastat out and found that the engine would still run around 240, it would just take longer to get there. Then I changed the radiator and presto, the engine never got even close to the mid range.... until I added the thermostat. I never saw an engine overheat without the thermostat in.
  5. I looked at the e11 when I was in the market for an aftermarket EFI. I searched on here, and nobody seemed to have one. It's kind of uncharted territory for z cars. You can search for the e6k maps, and manually input the settings into the e11. Let us know how it all works out.
  6. No, it is not legal. You cannot make it legal either. You can hide it somehow and get the other smog devices working properly and fool a tech, but it will not be legal.
  7. It's actually a 2.7L v6 s4 twin turbo model. My Audi has a supercharged 2.8L V6, but I can't squeeze out any more than about 300HP from that engine. It's still fun to drive.
  8. I'm with moridin on this one. Even though my 71 is inspection exempt, I am using all of the smog equipment from a later model car including a cat, egr, o2 sensor, etc. Even though it's over kill and has virtually no emissions, it still is not smog legal in CA. Why, because it has a programable ECU on the 83 engine. CA does not care about how clean the exhuast is, they only care about having everything the same as it was from the factory. Hope the other states will adopt a more reasonable law than CA has.
  9. I have a 280z airdam I'm putting on a 240z. Would you want to trade turn signal lights to make this work for both of us?
  10. Thanks guys for the information. I really want to do this right the first time, so I will probably get a new turbo upgrade rather than rebuilding mine.
  11. Is there a place that you would recommend for a new turbo?
  12. After reading this forum for a while, I got bitten by the bug to upgrade my 72 240z with an 83 turbo. I bought my donor car for $200, and I am just starting to go through the engine. I noticed that the turbo has excessive play and should be rebuilt at the very least. My question is this: What would you guys recommend, rebuilding my exsisting turbo or replacing my turbo with a t3/t4 hybrid? If I do the t3/t4, what kind of mods will I be looking at? This car will be a daily driver and probably not be raced.
