Wow, what a change! Next you'll go to a solid axle rear.....
Hope it works out for you.
-
If you wind up with the car up high enough this winter to take a bunch of additional pictures, I would sure appreciate it of you could send them to me via PM. Don't know if I could do that mod with the engine still in the car or not. But that's what Im after.
The cross member is currently out of my Z and I'm repainting it, so I'll send you some pics.
-
There is a pic in my gallery that shows a modified crossmember that I have had for the last few years. McKinney Motorsports modified and reinforced it for me. This has allowed me to easily remove the oil pan for inspection purposes without crossmember interference.
-
Wow, that Z of yours is moving. Great job!
-
Nice...but don't overdo it. With our low clearance Z's .....oil pan replacement gets expensive
-
Nice run...good to see you back in action.
-
Thanks Dan.
I couldn't rebuild the Z by myself but because of the support from friends I will be back!
-
Thank you!
I think many racers can relate to the content of this poem.

I composed a Poem about Drag Racing and recited it over the background of my Z's racing video. The video can be viewed in the video section of this site. Hope it doesn't sound too dumb!!!
-
Thanks for the encouragement.
A friend was videotaping my 3 runs at Pomona but he shut off the camera after I crossed the finish line and did not record my crash.
And my Go-Pro camera's battery had been depleted prior to the 3rd run negating any in-car footage of the crash. Maye I don't really want to remember my crash.

I'm borrowing Stony's description of my Z and using it from now on as its title.
My wife said she's tired of me sitting around the house and staring at the walls. She wants me in the garage, where I belong, trying to fix the Z.
Mack, at Mckinney Motorsports, will help me repair the damage, install new parts and do all necessary welding. I'm in the process of selling my coin collection and some U.S. Savings Bonds to buy a new front clip. Who needs old coins and paper cluttering up the house, anyway.
The first thing will be to upgrade my brakes so no further crashes occurr. And I will always pull my chute immediately after the 3rd run, from now on.
Unfortunately, the reconstruction will take some time but I'm just pleased that I will be able to race again.
-
Thank you all for your concern. I have been somewhat depressed over the crash and have not felt like talking about what occurred. But now I'm resigned to the fact I will be unable to race again. The rear and interior portion of the Z are ok, but it needs a new clip from the front bumper to the strut tower. The 10 point cage really kept the car structurally intact. I will try to sell it as a "fixer upper". ...ha ha. If that doesn't work I'll part it out since the turbos, engine, trans, rear, we're untouched.
It was a hot day and I had to brake harder than usually to stop the car after 160 mph runs. This was not a problem for the first 2 runs, however, after the 3rd back-to-back True Street run the brakes felt soft. When I realized I was in trouble and pulled the chute, it was too late. I saw the gravel pit approaching, rapidly, and thought it would stop the car. The Z just skimmed over the gravel, not sinking in. At that point I said,"Hello Net". It felt like driving into a paper bag that folded around you. Thanks to all my safety equipment, I did not receive a single scratch nor whiplash nor muscle soreness. This was also due to my being totally relaxed upon impact.
The paramedics and track personnel were there immediately and provided assistance. I commend all the staff for their compassion and professionalism in my moment of need.
I did get my plaque and $100 for posting the fastest 9 second time.

It is "the Man, the Myth, the Legend!" Lol
Sounds like the same old guy....HaHa.
Welcome back. As always, you have some interesting projects!
-
That is a stunning paint job. Your Z looks fantastic!

-
Just get an 8.50 cage...you know you will want one or two turbos in the future. My custom cage provides door bar clearance because I wanted to maintain street use.
-
have you taken your car to Famoso before with the Turbo setup?
Yes, I won True Street in April, 2013 at Famoso.

Thanks for the comment.
Since the water in/out is on top of the IC, gravity does not cause water spillage while the pump is off. I pour in 2 gallons of water and 20 lbs of crushed ice to fill the tank. There is no spillage or leakage, whatsoever. After my 3 hot-lap runs in Bakersfield, I still had ice in the tank. I hope I understood and answered your question correctly.
Any progress on your IC installation?

I installed the intercooler and prepped the car. Mack from Mckinney Motorsports fabbed the piping and welded everything up.
This really works great as evidenced by a 100 degree drop in intake manifold temperature at full boost from previous unintercooled temps.
Unfortunately, only little people can now ride in the passenger seat due to limited leg room.
-
Very nice.
I especially like the fact that you retained the stock hood.
It's a real sleeper and it looks good.

Mounted my new Air-to-Water intercooler under the dashboard. Cut holes in the inner fender and the firewall to route the 3 1/2 inch cold pipe to the intercooler. Reclocked the compressor housings of the turbos for the cold pipes. Driving the Z to Mckinney Motorsports to have Mack build the cold pipes in the next few days.
Still much more to do....but I'm getting there.
Will post pics when I'm further along with the project.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone!

Saturday, 4-6-13, I entered and won the True Street race at Famoso Dragstrip in Bakersfield. The best part was when I ran my first ever 8 second pass of 8.903 at 159.34 mph. This was after driving a 30 mile course through the "backcountry" of Bakersfield. The Z also had to pass an inspection to verify street legality. I ran 3 back to back passes in 12 minutes through the mufflers with DOT approved tires. No engine shut-off, no cooldown, no adjustments allowed. My 3 passes only averaged 9.17 seconds since the Z ran hot after the 8 second run.
Then they made me wear a royal mantle and crown and took a photograph. After the embarrasment was over, I was given a 6 ft tall trophy and a $250 check.
It was a good day....especially after I beat a Twin Turbo nitroused 427 LSX Corvette.

Nice!!!!!
Will this be air to water intercooled? Your diagram shows the cold side going back towards the firewall...if I'm seeing it correctly.
Purchased my first LS engine!

Those are extremely impressive times...I'm hoping to get close to that performance if I ever get my Z on the road again.
