Nice run!!
I've been seeing the pics of your Z on Mike Morgan's photo site but I haven't seen your Z when I've been there. Guess I'll have to go more often.

I'm sorry to hear that. But you must fix it because we want back to back, Best-Of-Show MSA awards for your beauty.

I've read that those boxes are a PITA to use and leak? I'm curious on why you didn't switch to a hat?
The boxes don't leak but it is more difficult to access the carb.
The other hat I'm referring to in this thread looks different than most because I have 2 compressor discharge entries that must be joined before blowing through the carb. But it still works like a standard carb hat.

What happened to the other box, did the backfire just pop the lid off?
I was wondering how much flex there would be in the 'glass box, sounds like there is a bit especially in high temps. What kind of adhesive did you use on the seams?
Adhesive is "The Right Stuff" gasket maker.
Backfire ripped one entire side off and peeled up the top. The lid put a huge crease into the hood.
Both boxes have anti-backfire valves now.

I had a question about that clear box. is it encasing the carb completely, basically making a huge pressure box? For carb setups, isn't that normally the best way to set them up so everything operates at the same pressure or something like that.
The box encases the carb completely.
The polished aluminum hat feels like it's making more power than the box because it' a straighter shot into the carb.
The plexi glass has more thermal expansion with heat and I had to use bigger bolts because with 20 psi boost they all bent.
Maybe I'll use the box for car shows and the hat for racing. Either way, I may have to get wastegates now because I can't seem to hook up the power these new turbos make.
Jbk240z- The glass is durable, the bolts got bent.
Tkach- there should be some exhaust manifold pics in my photo gallery.
Thanks all for the comments.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope it heals rapidly.
That's why I use a lighter, small diameter, high stall torque converter.

Happy Birthday, Doc.
You don't need no stinking tile, I want to see progress on the turbo monster.

Which set-up looks better?

I fabricated two air boxes after my original one had another lean misfire that destroyed it and also took out the hood.
Junkyard hood is painted and on.
This pic is of the hat. There are several more views of the air boxes in my Photo Gallery.
Which set-up looks better?

This is great. Makes me hungry......

Wow, Wayne, thats progress. Sure looks good. How will you run the downpipes?
Hanns

I'm impressed. The turbos fit better than I thought they would. Still a little massaging would provide more clearance so that the paint won't burn. The I/C will help keep the air cooler but you might still have to use some race gas at the track. Looking good!!

What lift and rocker ratio are you using? Roller or flat tappet?
Wayne,
Cam is solid roller, Chet Herbert, with 1.5 roller rockers, 242/250 @ 50, 580/600 lift. Have been running this cam for 7 years, NA and turboed, no problems.
Your cam should be ok with the larger engine and 112 LS.

My cam is 242 @50 with 114 lobe separation. Since you are thinking street operation 114 cam will allow use of power brake booster. My idle provides 12-14 in. of hg and good power braking.

I will also change out the rear chunk back to a 4:10 vice 4:86 and even higher (3:73, etc. gearing) if I have to. I have 13.5 inches of basically what we used to know as cheater slicks on the ground and a four-link to play with, so we'll see.
Wayne
Yes, I think your components are up to the task.
I also have .96 A/R ratio turbines and they spool up nicely.
You will find that the turbos really accelerate your engine rpm and the gear change will be necessary. I'm thinking of changing my 4.10's out also because it seems impossible to shift gears below 7000.
I hope your tires are 13.5 inches wide, each, because your engine will make 800 hp at idle.:D

This should be interesting!!
You'll have to modify the hood to fit the turbos.
What type and size are they?
Are you sure you want to keep the 10:1 pistons?
You have 20" wide rear tires to handle the torque, right?
Good luck, can't wait to see it run.
You are sure raising the BAR (pun intended) with this very ambitious project.

We made the switch to CV's about 20 months ago and have not broken anything. ( Now this will be the Kiss of Death) We are running the original stub axles 1976, with the 300 Turbo cv's. Our best 60' is a 1.32.Jerry
ZGAD is also running an IRS with an 8 second quarter mile.
Although I am very much impressed with their Z's performances, how secure do they feel as they launch their beasts? The above quote contains a clue! A solid axle gives you one less thing to worry about if you are drag racing. The IRS is more important for road racing.

The best part about forced induction is that you can have a mild engine that cruises on the street like a daily driver, yet doubles its horsepower when you punch it and the turbo(s) spool up.
-
what's up with your Z anyway?
I sent you a PM.

Here I am with my oldest grandson and my wife of 42 years.
Our grandson's Varsity High School Football team had traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado for an exhibition game against Grand Junction High School. My wife and I decided to drive and see the game. We had a great time and our team won.
We went to Zion National Park and also made stops in Las Vegas.
We didn't take the Z because we would have had to take a loan to pay for the fuel.
-
It's always great to see another TTv8 engine in a Z.
With your current turbo header spacing you will probably have to cut into the fenderwells or run small diameter downpipes.
Also, the small T3 turbines will give you immediate boost with a 383 engine if they are .60 A/R or smaller. When I temporarily switched to that A/R with my Rajays I was making boost right off idle and 30 psi at 3000 rpm.
Unfortunately it was too much torque and no gas mileage.
But......go for it. I don't want to discourage you.
-
Just put a turbo on it.
It's not a tough decision.

That paint job looks great. I hardly recognized the car from the last time I saw it.
Again, thanks for helping me out at MSA.
