  1. David: Mine was doing the same thing just before 5th gear broke....again. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 2. The dude in Auburn that basically built the car originally said I can't use a z31 tranny....input shaft is different. I think what I am going to do one more time is get another na tranny to throw in it to buy myself some time to figure out what to do about getting a tranny that will hold up. The guy I got the last tranny from said he would swap it for another since it only lasted a whole 5 days so it is only costing me labor which is no biggie. Maybe it will last longer than 5 days this time..... JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 3. BLKMGK: Yeah, my first stang had a tremec 3550 in it and I didn't have any bitches about it other than the stock shifter that was on it. I do like how the t5 in my cobra feels alot better but I could definately get used to the tremec knowing I could shift the hell out of it without breaking it. Morgan: The input shaft would have to be changed though, right? JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 4. Mista: Yeah, the 280zx turbo tranny will bolt right up but I just have to have a driveshaft shortened to make it work. I am in a way hesitant about doing this b/c even my old 84 turbo tore up it's t5 twice with waaaay less hp than what the 280 is putting out. BLKMGK: If was going to go through the expense and trouble of building a t5 I would much rather go through a little more throw in a tremec or something. Know what I'm saying? 5. The reason I'm asking is b/c the clutch in the 280 was starting to slip before the tranny broke again. I have an ACT in my old 84 turbo that I'm fixing to start tearing apart and would love to use it in the 280. The guy I got the car from said he tried a couple of ACT's in it at one time and couldn't get it to disengage. He said it was a problem with the clutches but some guy at ACT seemed to think it was a problem with the old Z's hydraulic system or some **** . ANyone here running one? 6. My 280 keeps breaking the 280zx na trannies so I want to get at least get a t5 in it. Anyone know how much I need to have a driveshaft shortened to make it work? Anyone have any kind of aftermarket tranny in their Z? T56, tremec, etc, etc, etc. I need something that's going to stand up to some abuse and alot of power. Thanks alot. 7. BLKMGK: Yeah, the cobra comes stock with GT40 heads so I guess it would be a bitch huh? What I would really like is just a plain ole vortech A-trim but they don't make a kit for 94+....would have to go with the S-trim. I got a NOS kit laying around so I'll probably just throw a 100 shot at it for now and not worry about it till the car is paid off. Oh yeah, the front wheels on teh Z do have a spacer to work.....I'm not exactly sure how thick it is but I'm sure I can find out. JT BTW, what kind of mustang do/did you have? ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 8. LOL, the thought of selling it has actually crossed my mind lately but I don't see it happening. I recently got a 94 cobra and selling the Z would pretty much pay it off and give me the option of a twin turbo kit. Like I said though, I really don't see it happening. The wheels are 18x8's, 5x4.5, +20 in rear and +40 in front. They don't rub but the rears are really really close. Rides like **** but at least looks good. 9. Oh, I might end up selling the 18's on the 280 in the near future if you are interested in buying them. They look kick ass but I would rather get a smaller wheel that I can get a drag radial for. Haven't decided for sure yet but the idea has crossed my mind quite a few times. 10. Hey dgsc1: I bought Walker Morgan's 280z a few months ago and I am just around the corner from you in Daphne, AL. You're more than welcome to look at the car to get ideas or whatever. WOuld be nice to find some more Z people arond the area. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 11. speaker: We'll see what kinda times the Z will get tomorrow night. I've been in Auburn all week hanging outand heading to the 1/4 track tomorrow night on the way home in MOntgomery. I figure it should run at least mid 12's at 115 or better on the street tires. I'll be back in Mobile about 1 or 2 tomorrow night and will let you know if you are out. 12. Morgan: Mine has the stock manifold with a deltagate external wastegate. I can get pics of how it's setup the next time I'm under the car. If you want to drive to Birmingham I'm sure turbo specialties can set it up for you. Their number is 205-444-5011. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 13. Seems like I read somewhere that 81-82 turbos had the p90 and 83 turbos had the p90a. That shop in montgomery said he had several good motos with p90's for $350. I'm thinking about snatching one up myself to have for another spair for when I blow mine. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. I'm thinking hard about it.....early next year would be good if I decide for sure to go for it. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 16. Yep, looks like it too me a whole 6 weeks or so to tear this transmission up. It was broken when I bought the car but the seller had it fixed while the motor and all was out. It didn't break tonight while out racing or anything but instead on the way home on ther interstate. I was cruising along about 90mph when I heard something pop and I felt a knocking through the shifter.....transmission all of a sudden didn't like 5th gear to much either. I drove it the rest of the way home in 4th. When starting off in 1st or something it occasionaly kinda froze up and the whole car stopped until I messed with the shifter a bit. SOunds to me like I lost part of 5th gear but I'm no expert on transmissions either. What do you think? ANyone got a 280zx na tranny they want to get rid of cheap? 17. I have a spair p90 head laying around and am thinking about sending it off to get worked and stuff. Need advice on what all to have done to it to get the best gains from it and also need recomendation on who to send it to. ALso, I want to get a nice cam to go with it.....not all that worried about a nice idle or anything like that....car is not a daily driver anyway. The car is a 280z with a L28T motor, to4e turbo, huge intercooler, blah blah blah. Thanks, JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 18. My 280z has the toyota 4x4 front calipers with the z31 rotors. They have recently started clattering when the car is moving...on my z31 I have fixed this by getting a hardware kit.....do I need the same for the toyo stuff? I can reach in through the wheels and move the pads around a bit on both sides.....is this maybe a normal thing if they are getting close to replacement time? Also, can anyone recommend a brand of pads to buy in case I need to replace them? Thanks, JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 20. I doubt you would want to drive this far but there is a place here in mobile that supposedly does sweet work but not all that cheap. They did a 10pt in my friend's 91 GT and it looks really nice. I still have that 10 pt in pieces if you are interested....I'm sure I will never use it. JT

    LSD question

Morgan: My 280 has a stock 280zx na driveshaft in it...pushing well over 400hp...dunno if it's any stronger or weaker than the 280z driveshaft though. If your car already has the 3.90 then the LSD should go right in, right? Mine also has 3.90, had LSD at one time. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 22. Clint: the wheels are 18x8, not 17x9...seems like he had some 17's on it a year or so ago though. I realize he has toasted more than one motor....the one that came out of the car recently came out of a ragged out, wrecked parts car I owned at one time....god knows how many miles it had when I sold it to the guy that Walker got it from. Thanks for all the info....some of it's outdated but there are a few things there he didn't mention....will probably come in handy. There are some updated pics of it on my wesite if you want to check it out...going to update it again this week with some new pics off the trailer. 23. I noticed you posted a pic of Walker's 280 in a previos topic. Just wanted to let you know that Z is now Jonathon Taylor's. I bought it from him with a blown motor about 6 weeks ago. Lovin it so far. BTW, he said he ran a 12.4 @ 116 with this setup....stock computer and mass air and all. I think that 12.7 was with the old T3 turbo and starion intercooler. It now has a Bell 27x10x3 intercooler and a big to4e turbo on it. Needless to say, that 12.4 was severely traction limited. I took it to the 1/8 track the other day and could only get a 8.5 @ 90 b/c of it getting sideways on me until the middle of 3rd gear. With that 116 MPH it ran I don't see it being a problem running some high 11's with the current setup. JT ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor. 25. Morgan....any reason the 7es-11 would not work in out vg30's? What's the benefit of having the v-groove? JT P.S. Someone else told me I could use the BPR-7es or 8es as a colder plug for the 280......should work for the vg30 as well, right? ------------------ 1978 280z with 280zx turbo motor.
