  1. looking for a 71 240 with a 355 and 4 speed overdrive trans that was sold to a person in Cali.was white with welded in roll bar and disk brakes in the rear.I would appreciate any info on this car. Dennis, elderhawk98@yahoo.com
  2. Griffin radiator with a Cadillac Fan full shroud with trap doors that open at highway speed. fan cools great at idle and highway speed. same exact setup was cooling the last engine at all speeds.Taurus fan switch turns on at 185* . Last was early ls 1 (1970 ) with solid lifters,30-30 cam, torquer heads from world 67cc same pistons, crank, carb, fan, waterpump, shroud. Other engine had hooker shorties, am now using long tube headers from S&S bought from another list member. I am wondering if I may have a bad lean spot in the carb at slow to medium rpm that could cause overheating but the plugs show a light chocolate brown .
  3. I thought of that and to try to eliminate it I jacked the car up in front and fill it with water. I also have three 1/8 inch holes in the thermostat to try to keep out an embolism Thanks for the thoughts, Dennis
  4. If they had an emoticon for pulling out your hair I would have used it. 71 240 w/355 sportsman 2 heads 64cc silvolite 10cc domes .30 over std. stroke Holley 750 vac sec running 81 on primary and yellow spring on vac sec Doug Herbert Hydraulic roller .567 lift 246 at .50 91 octane pump gas no ping 34* at 2800 rpm timing 10 at idle 950* will idle all day at 185 degrees with fan comming on occasionally runs at 95 mph for 18 min never over 180* in 85 * ambient would continue at this level NO overheating on highway drive stop and go for fifteen minutes at not more thao 3000rpm and am runnign temps of 210 to 220. Ran best of 12.97 at 111.9 in kansas city altitude no heating probs in 9 passes with idleing 10 to 15 min btwn runs WTF Any ideas? Driving me nuttier than squirrel sh*t Thanks, Dennis
  5. Come on up! The more Hybrids the more tire smoke. I have tried the auto X and didn't do well. Need to run slicks to have enough traction to use the power. I am looking forward to seeing the LS1 in a Z. I am running an old school LT 1 in mine and wish I had the fuel injection. Hope you guys make it . Dennis

  7. Do you mind me asking where the hydraulic was leaking? I installed a mcleod and it leaked around the swivels. I removed them and put in brake fittings and connected the lines to them and no leaks now. I am now wondering if I will have a leak problem down the road with the bearing cylinder itself. Thanks Dennis Let me know if you need a t5 camero bell housing I have one extra with a cylinder.
  8. My wife straightened me out on the us vs them years ago. Stopped at a light in my 71 Z8 next to a young man in a Cavalier , body kit, fart pipe , tires out of the wheel well, the works. He was reving his engine some and his little girl friend was digging it . I looked over and started to laugh at him when my wife asked why I was laughing , and wouldn't it make him feel bad . At this point I began to tell her all the silly things wrong with the car and her only response was "he likes, it so why is it a problem for you?" OK so now I laugh to myself but try my darndest no to rain on someone elses parade. Dennis
  9. The Phantom is still holding up in the 240 . I think for the money it is a good investment, looking at 300 dollars or 1000 made it an easy choice for me. I am putting 340 pound feet to it from 2500 rpm to 6000 when I shift. So far I have seen no signs of wear in about 2000 miles of mostly spirited driving. If you are asking if it is as positive as a regular clutch type limmited slip, I would have to say no.Phantom works on the principal of friction between two dissimilar metals with no clutch material between and thus more slippage is likely.I think wear will be greater over time also, and unlike clutch types that can be rebuilt when these wear down it is trash can time. I get very good traction from the Phantom when leaving the line and accelerating in a straight line but slightly less when cornering. In a car producing 200 pound feet with the same R200 differential I think the traction on corners would be better. Lets not forget this unit was designed for a 200SX not for a "real 350Z". Installing the phantom was about a 2 hour job after the diff was out of the car.I did have to machine about 15/1000ths off the inner plates to get the fit I wanted but others used a slightly tighter fit with no problems reported as of yet. Geratest thing since sliced bread?? No. A good bang for the buck?? Yes in my opinion.YMMV Dennis On 1/3/2003 11:51:11 PM zcar_dad wrote: ~Hey, v8Z - we were talking recently about your Phantom Grip rear end. How about posting a note for all about what it is, what it does for your car, and how you like it? I know they are cheaper then a Quaife but would it hold up at the track (HPCCC)? 10. After a little over one thousand miles no metal flakes in diff oil. seems to be holding up well. I don't drag race at a track just some spirited driving on the street so I can't speak for it's durability in that use. For the price I feel I got my moneys worth. Two nice black stripes when 300 pound feet of v8 torque hit the tires works for me. Dennis Aka V8Z HAZCC # 13 IZCC # 1390
  11. Hey Flash, Do you have the JTR book. I wired mine as per thier instructions and have had no problems. Mine is a 71 so some have slight differences. I went to an office supply store and they copied the wiring diagram from my manual and blew it up to poster size. Made it very easy to be sure I had the correct wire in hand when I made the connections. Don't let a small bump in the road stop you. Take it from me the suprised look on a Mudstain drivers face when you spank him severly is what makes the effort worth it. Dennis AKA V8ZED
  12. Specs are, .030 overbore 2bolt block 74 vintage, forge crank from chevy truck std clevite 77 bearings, pink rods used and resized, hp618 .125 dome piston for 9.25 to 1 compression, world products SR Torquer heads with bowl work 2.02 & 1.60 valves, cam is 290 horse 1968 Z28 cam from a 302 , has .485 lift at valve and 254 degree duration at .050 inch set 4 degrees advanced., called a 30-30 as hot lash is .030 on all valves .carb is 750 Holley vacuume secondary on a victor jr. manifold , runs on regular unleaded with no ping at 41 degrees total ignition advance. Uses a petronix module in a stock HEI dist. Nothing fancy but looks like it wants more compression and more intake volume in the head. maybe some AFRs next year but it is fun for now and less than 1600 dollars in motor as I did assembly myself. Dennis
  13. What to do with a rainout day? Why go to the dyno of course. We did two pulls for a baseline to work from. First pull was 306 horsepower at 5900 rpm with 285 pound feet from 2600 to 3900 then up to 300 pound feet to 5000. Touque curve is flat as a board. Second pull with 4 degrees more timing brought 310.6 horses at 6200 rpm and peak torque of from 4000 to 5300 rpm. A little less than I want but will come up a bit with further tuning. Till then 310 at the rear wheels and 2465 pounds of car will have to do. works out to 7.95 pounds per horsepower. This was with the engine specs in my "too much rpm for waterpump " post. Dennis
  14. Thanks for the replies, I am running a 165 degree thermostat it also has a 1/8 inch hole to prevent air embolism. I notice the water going into the can before the motor is shut off. I also observe no spike in temp after a run other than to about 180 . After a couple minutes normal running it goes back to 165,170 . I am not really worried about blowing up the pump but rather about blowing water past the pressure cap due to high pressure from a pump spinning too fast. Although it seems that it should be able to go through the Griffin and back to the block as fast as the pump can move it. Sometimes I can smell the water hitting the engine while driving if the can gets full to fast. I am going to replace the cap and thermostat as a start and hook the hose to the drain on the can to try to recover the water. Second I would really like to get a horse power estimate. Did I give enough detail in the above post to run on a dyno program? Thanks, Dennis
  15. Hey Guys, I am having a small problem with water loss in my 240 with a 355 Chevy . I love the performance and am overall happy with the car. I shift at 6200 to 6400 when accelerating hard and at 2600 when driving normally . Whenever I have made a long hard run I find my 1qt catch can full and the same gone from my radiator. Regular (below 5000) driving doesn't make this happen. What is the top rpm a stock water pump should see? I am thinking maybe trying to find a smaller pulley but I have serpentine drive . Thinkin I may need to remove every other vane in the pump if I can,t slow it down. Any one else have this type problem? 355 chevy block sr torquer 2.02 heads bowl ported 67cc chamber forge crank hp618 .125 dome hyperu pistons 1968 Z28 3030 cam solid lifters 513 lift at valve installed 4 degrees advanced 114* lobe center 254 duration at .050 in w crane roller tip rockers chromoly pushrods Victor jr 1 in taller than std with Holly 750 vac secondary carb petronix module in acell hei dizzy recip assembly balanced to 8000 I would also ask if Grumpyvette or some one with a dyno program could give me a horsepower and torque estimate. I do know the 240 weighs 2680 with me and 10 gallons of fuel and was still pulling hard at 5000 in high ( .73 OD ) with 3.54 gears. Calculated at 145 mph with 25.. in tall tires. What hp does this take?? Thanks for taking time to read, Dennis AKA V8ZED IZCC #1390 Heart of America Z-Car Club # 13
