  1. I was scraping the sound deadening material off the floor of the car last night to see how much rust I would have to deal with (There is some but it is not too bad so far). Anyway, I got to wondering why they put so many drain holes in the floor? If I remember correctly there are three in the area for your feet and two more under the seat!! Is Japan really that wet?? I think I am going to weld them all up with patches and not have any drain holes - what is the popular opinion about filling drain holes?
  2. I'll stick with my Willys. I am currently in the middle of a rebuild on it and am putting in a buick v6. It had a Studebaker flat 6 in it before and on a good day it could do 55 mph - but it will go just about anywhere. I figure I have the jeep to go where ever I want and the z car to go as fast as I want = the best of both worlds.
  3. Right now I would settle for paint and interior. The detailed list for that should take up a couple a pages. After that comes the long list.
  4. The Pony Express Race is over - I missed most of the events of the weekend because I went to Reno. From what I hear it turned out pretty good except for the wind and the Mormon Crickets ( they get smashed on the road and make things really slick). Only one car wreck this year - a guy totaled his '54 Studebaker - OUCH! No damage to the driver. A few years ago a guy wrecked his 80's vintage Corvette while doing close to 200 mph and walked away from it He had built his car well. Lots of Corvettes ( I think several Corvette clubs get together and come up for the race) a few Porsche 928's ( I really like those) and other Porsches, Camaros, Mustangs, various other cars and even a '72 Pantera. Didn't see any z cars this year. Later in the year we will have the world speed record attempts on bicycles here - 80 mph on a bike. I'll fill you in on that one when they come.
  5. Went to Ace Hardware and orderd Ospho - of course they do not stock it! Wont be here until next week. I really like living in a small town but sometimes it can be frustrating. I try to spend about an hour a day working on the car - along with a '48 Willys CJ2A that I am restoring - but without the materials needed it is hard to get anything done . How much time a day - or week - or month?? do you spend working on your projects???
  6. About the Zinc - Does Ospho have Zinc in it? I found Ospho on the internet pretty easily but did not find where it says it has zinc in it or not. Found an MSDS sheet on Naval Jelly and it does not seem to have any in it. Thanks
  7. I believe there are three races in Nevada - the one here at Battle Mountain, one from Elko to Wildhorse resiviour and back and one out of Hiko - which is more remote than anything in existance. There may also be open road races in Montana and Texas but I'm not sure.
  8. I live in Battle Mountain, NV and this weekend we are having the Pony Express Race. It is an open road race between here and Austin, NV - about a 90 mile trip. The cars enter different speed classes and try to comlete the 90 miles by averaging that speed for the entire distance. The speed classes start at 90 mph and go up to 165 mph - above that is the unlimited class where the goal is to do the coarse a fast as possible. The record is somewhere around 200 mph average for the full 90 miles. I had an opportunity to do it a few years ago with a guy in a Dodge Viper - we were in the 125 mph class! What an impressive ride. There is a strech of canyons down toward Austin that we took at 125 mph! Could feel the suspension working as the car shifted from side to side through the turns. Wow! Never had a sense that we were going to slide at all and cruising the straights at 140 mph was like every day driving. Used to get a couple of v8 z cars - one was a scarab - I don't know if they were part of the hybrid z group, it was before I knew about this site and didn't ask. Has anyone ever been here for the Pony Express race?
  9. I went to the local parts place last night to try and get some ospho but they had never heard of it. ( I live in a very small town and options are limited) I did pick up some Naval Jelly since it has phosphoric acid in it - some of my research on rust removal showed that phosphoric acid is the way to go. I was very impressed with the way that it worked!!! still just a little of the darker deep rust areas left but I am going to try my grinder with a sandpaper wheel on it to finish it off. I am going to do that search on ospho and try that out - thanks for the input.
  10. I picked up a 260z last night - I am back into the Z game. I had a '71 that I gave away a few years ago because it was too far gone to save. (Terminal body cancer) On the '71 I did the cam and triple carbs etc... and when I got it back together I had the "coulda had a v8 blues". This time around I will be doing a v8 - eventually. Right now I plan on fixing the few dents and dings in the body, getting it painted and then make sure the brakes work correctly etc..... then I will drive it until I get all the parts assembled to do the conversion. Right now the 260 looks very bad - but it is straight and I have not found any rust through spots - yet . I know the first thing someone is going to say is "post a picture" but I do not have the technology for that. I will see what I can do. I am glad to have found this site - I've been lurking for a while and there is a lot of good information here and I like the feel of this place. One question before I go. I have been sanding some surface rust on the front fender with brillo pads and sandpaper. It is easy to get the rust off quickly and get the metal very smooth - but- there are dark spots in the metal where the heavier rust was. Is it necessary to get the metal all 'shiny' before priming or is it ok to leave the dark spots? Thanks
  11. Is there a price list for this stuff? Where would I send a money order? What is the shipping cost? Thanks
  12. For cheap tubing go to your local thrift store and get several old bicycles. I have purchase bikes for $1 before. Just cut them up and paractice away! You can also make stuff like recumbent bicycles or mini choppers. This will give you a feel for how strong your weld are turning out. Make a bike and ride it - if it falls apart you still need to practice. IMO if you make things that function you will learn faster. It will also give you an excuse to make jigs for allignments. BTW, Harbour Freight has a metal cutting chop saw that sells for about $50, if you can afford one it will really speed your work up. Otherwise a hack saw and file will work.
