  1. I think if the car is in excellent shape I would due a little selective removal at first. The areas that seem most prone to rust are at the overlap joints. Check out where the floor pan meets the firewall and where it meets the back half of the car. This is where I found my hidden rust.

If you are doing this under the car I would try the oven cleaner routine first. Please and I do mean please wear eye protection, gloves and a long sleeve shirt. Good luck with it.

  2. My early 260 has a different dash than the 240's and they do have the small bumpers but they are shock mounted. Can't recall on the turn signals though. The tail lights are different as well. The red & black car has early 240 style european bumpers on it. They can be mounted to a 240 but you will need to fabricate some brackets. This is what I plan on doing.

  3. I bought a 94 Trans Am in August with 35K original miles. The car had been garage kept under a cover it's entire life! I paid 10K for it and had no trouble getting it finanaced. As far as handling I think the car handles fairly well and I just did my first track event in it. Check out this thread from the motorsports section of this site. I was able to hang with 944's through the twisties and then smoke them on the straight. Go F-Body you won't regret it.

  4. You`ve got to love being an instructor at times like that!

I do HPDE`s, and my hats off to the instructors out there!

Ditto to that! I did my first track event this past weekend and the instructors are awesome. I improved every time I went out and it was only because of my instructors advice.

I know this guy made a horrible mistake, but I can see where it would be possible in the heat of the moment.

  5. Hey Fly Yellow,

The event is being held at 3915 N. Main St. in Gainesville. Mapquest says that this is about 7.5 miles off of I-75. The show starts at noon and the turnout is expected to be about 40 Z Cars. Stop by on your way out, I'm sure it will be a blast. It will be worth your while just to see Scotties, Rick Bowers and V8ZRACER's cars, trust me. I will have my cell phone with me, just email me off line for the number.

  6. My L6 with manifolds and carbs still attached has been on a four wheel engine stand for over two years now. It is mounted to the bellhousing bolt holes with the arms that came with the stand. I don't see any reason to purchase a special stand. I got mine off eBay and it is a basic heavy duty stand. Just my $0.02 though.

  7. I found a set of 3 piece modular wheels for a great price but I'm not sure who makes them. The only marking that made any sense was on the back of the wheel where it said "Made in Japan" and then "S.W" below that. They are 16x8's with a mesh or honeycomb center section.

Anybody know who makes these wheels and if they are any good? The center caps are missing and I would need to find a set is the main reason I'm asking.

  8. I started on my 240 in February of 2000 and gave up on the rust repairs when I got the 260 in December of 2001. So I haven't had the 260 a year yet, just seems longer because this is the part of the restoration I despise.

I know what you mean about collecting parts that does help. I'm working on suspension components and have the coil overs, sway bars, Tokico Illuminata's and a CV joint R200. Let's see there's urethane bushings, CV adapters, 280 stub axles, adjustable control arms, brakes, ball joints and tie rods to go. malebitchslap.gif It's easier to think about it one piece at a time or it gets depressing.

I will try the "Mr Muscle" oven cleaner this weekend. I still have three wheel wells and the spare tire area to do. Thanks for the tip.

The rotisserie looks good. I almost went the two engine stand method and wished I would have when I got into fabricating one from scratch. bonk.gif I'm glad you're making progress. I had lost interest in mine and let it sit for several months until a friend kicked me in the ass and got me going again.
