PROGRESS!
Spent 90% of my weekend in the garage.
Mounts done, starting circuit done, power circuit done, and started mocking up charge pipes.
nice!
Close to the firewall
Very close! Should have good weight distribution.
Shifter lines up great. Still a lot of wiring to do.
Sweet JDM shift knob that came with my swap.... I kinda dig it! Nice to be able to row through 5 gears on the Z
Supra getting jealous from all the attention being given to the Z.
That it for this weekend. I'll get some more work done next weekend and maybe some weeknights.

MEGA UPDATE!
Sure is nice have a day off during the week. (I work four 10 hour days
So this morning I did a brake upgrade on my customers V6 mr2 (1997 mr2 turbo JDM spec front brakes). Took about 2 hours he was very happy.
Then I pulled the motor out of the Z! OMG easiest car to work on ever. Took about an hour to have it out
Then I headed over to my local JDM parts imported and took a look at what he had. He didn't have any 2jzgte motors, but he had 2jzge and 1jzgte motors. I expected to go home motor-less but he offered me a deal I couldn't refuse.
I got the complete swap with EVERYTHING I need for over $500 less that I expected to pay for JUST a 2jzgte engine.
FREE DELIVERY! The owner of the engine importer lives 2 blocks from me!
1jzgte complete swap with r154 trans
Drive shaft, worth over $100!
Power steering reservoir (again worth a lot) - Yes this Z will get power steering eventually, and AC!
A bunch of aluminum intercooler pipes and silicone couplers and even a ARC BOV! (worth like $200)
And a cold air intake that came in it's toyota soarer clip
AND the radiator fan shroud from the soarer which should fit my mkiv supra. I've been looking for a good condition shroud for awhile and the are hard to find and expensive.
ALL of this for $500 LESS than I spend on my last engine only swap that took too months to arrive.
PICS PICS PICS!
Engine coming out:
Pressure washed and primered engine bay. No more bare metal! Will probably paint factory orange in here... maybe. Don't really care. It's my daily!
The guys over at Venus Automotive in Sacramento have everything you need, are friendly, will make you a deal no problem. They did the compression test right in front of me. HIGHLY recommended! That's the owner and forklift master getting my 1jz from it's proud top shelf storage
Here the engine sits, waiting to turn the Z into a rocket ship. The Z looks a little concerned.
The supra looks interested, but knows she's my TRUE love

UPDATE!
The L28 currently in the Z has been SOLD!
The best part of the deal is that I'll be installing it in the buyers Z, funding 90% of the engine swap!
Engine will be coming out and going into his Z over the next two weeks, meanwhile it's time to buy a 2jzgte swap.

Made a new header back exhaust, I wasn't happy with the first one in terms of look, sound or fitment.
Its a tiny bit louder that the last set up (has the rear can and an evo 9 resonator)
Visually, I find it much more appealing.
-
If necessity is the mother of invention, then boredom was this weekends daddy. I picked up a someone ricey muffler can for $20 this weekend of craigs. Decided to slap it on the Z after a few beers. I made a 2.5 inch exhaust out of spare pipes from the factory header back. It sounds great, very quiet, I wish it was actually a bit louder. Personally, I know it's a big old can but I kinda like it, it looks better in person and quite aggressive
Hate it, love it, it's probably coming off when I do the swap.
-
BTW, my L28 is for sale, complete good running engine and trans, located in elk grove, ca

OMG AN UPDATE:
Well a small one. I found some time the other day to make some intercooler mounts and test fit it... looks pretty good and fits perfectly:
Here is one of the things that's been distracting me lately... A NA build for a guys V6 Mr2! Ported heads and some other trick little bits.
I also did order a rear sump oil pan for the engine swap on the Z. It's going to be a 2jz! Made up my mind....
-
upcoming turbo? or that is the feeling i got from the beer and the intercooler...
Yes sir. Twin turbo 1jz that is
-
well in the words of mat, its going to be a "terbauxe"
what? lol
Picture from phone cam on Monday... looks nice after a weekend quick detail!
Outside my shop:
-
1jz or 2jz

Still running great, daily driving. Check out what I found in the car today!
Neat!
Guess that answers the question of millage. 150k it is (wasn't sure if it was 50k or 150k, though i guess it could be 250k I don't think it is!)
-
Funny, I've got a MKIV and a orange z too!
My supra is black though
-
Geez, those big rims look all wrong for the car. I would never go over 16"

Interesting stuff guys
So is there still a valving benefit from swapping to the 15/16th ZX MC? I can get one pretty cheap (without the reservoirs ... do they swap over from the 75 z master??)
-
Apex is exactly right; on the residual pressure valve being incorperated into the master cylinder on the 70-78 z's. You need a ZX master.
Awesome. Is that a direct swap? Any booster upgrade I should consider? Maybe mine is just aged, but I feel like the pedal is too hard.
-
I know what a prop valve is and does, but I was reading that there is a valve that maintains some pressure in the rear system for the drums. And I am experiencing a small amount of rear disk "dragging" after a stop.
-
I just swapped for rear disk on my 1975 280z
I keep reading about some valve or restrictor for the drums that I should remove?
Feels like it need more pressure going to the rear brakes if anything, fronts lock up easily (at least in the rain!)
Anything else that should be done in the system? I'll be upgrading the fronts next
Thank you!
-
Drove it around a bit (in the rain!) with the new brakes. Feels a lot different, stiffer pedal feel, braking power felt good and improved over drums once I got the rust and crud off the rotors by putting some heat into them
I may need a brake bias controller in the near future.
Next up will be a front brake (probably 4 piston) upgrade and getting the balance sorted out.
I'm starting to realize just how much these old tires suck! They have horrible traction! It's amazing the car corners as well as it does with them. Oh well - have to burn them up first!
-
which kit? since most do not fit 14" wheels (and some don't fit 15" wheels)
modern motorsport adapters!
Finally got around to installing them today
Just barely fits behind everyone favorite wheels!
About 3-4 mm clearance!
BTW here is a recent interior shot Forgot to upload this a while ago:
And a preview of whats to come!

Wow that's pretty wild. Looking forward to updates and moar pics.

Rear disk upgrade going on today pics later....

what tire size do you have sketch?
They came with it, but they are 225 60 14.
Went for a spirited drive today (first time the roads have been dry for nearly 2 weeks) around some seldom used winding levy roads ... had a BLAST! Hardest I've been on the car since I've owned it and it did everything I asked and expected it to do. I half expected to throw a rod but the l28 is stout and didn't complain one bit.
Cornering grip is good even with the crappy tires and massive sidewalls.
Higher speed maneuvering and small adjustments leave the car feeling a bit unsettled and slightly unpredictable. I believe that a full bushing kit coupled with some better tires/rims will mostly cure that.
The open diff is another major limitation... LSD isn't just a desire but mandatory in the cars future.
Hit the streets with the supra later - what a difference between these cars. Not only in refinement and power, but the feeling and soul. I enjoy driving them both equally but for different reasons.
Pic from earlier... MX-6 is my wife's. She'll get a new car when that dies but that probably wont be for a while. Thing won't quit!
That's all for now.
My first Z!

UPDATE:
So I've been putting in about an hour or two on the car after work and spent my entire day off on it today.
Cooling system is done except for a single heater hose
Drive shaft done
Charge pipes hooked up (will refine the set up later)
Fuel pump in and working (Walbro 255)
Fuel lines routed
Clutch line done
Custom V belt done for no AC or PS pumps (40 inches, thanks Napa!)
Charging system wired up
Start up video. This is the second start, but it started right up on the first try.
Still need to do a lot of wiring, figure out one heater hose, make an exhaust, fill trans fluid, bleed clutch, test cooling system and complete throttle cable before I can drive it.
I'll definitely be driving it this weekend though. Pretty excited!
