labrat
Hey, i was cruzing the net for a decent muffler that i could fit two of under a Z car, and i stumbled across these. Has anyone had any experience with these, and will they give me a headache on the open road? Thanks http://www.carchemistry.com/ccinserts.html They actually sound like a really good idea if they will actually muffle...
Guest super280z
funny, i was actually just looking at those today. my car is gonna be soo loud. 2.5" duals into single 3" with a dynomax 6" ultraflo. i've been looking for something simple, cheap and that will fit into my exhaust system. these sound like the solution but i dont know how they will effect flow. hmm... labrat
You think yours is gonna be loud, then my 2 1/2 in dual straight pipes are gonna rattle windows... I think i'm just gonna use those as mufflers, nothing else but pipe. I'll see how it works, anyway. They are cheap enough. By the way, super280z, is the C.C. Corpus Christi or Copperas Cove? Just curious...
BLKMGK
I've got 2X2.5 into a 3 into a Sebring 14 inch muffler. I think SCCA is using an even longer Sebring muffler on his. Anyway, on a trip tonight it darn near droned us out of th ecar. I'll be having a pair of Dynomax bullets installed in addition to the Sebring. I think the Sebring LOOKS awesome and it IS knocking sound down but not quite enough and it can't stop the resonating on my motor. I had planned on using Edelbrock mufflers under there with it but the muffler guy said no way - too big (grr). 80mph in 6th is just a bit over 2KRPM. Car pulls GREAT at this speed in that gear but anything lower in the RPM band starts a drone. Not as bad as a Mustang with 2chamber Flow's but bad enough. The woman had cotton in her ears and it still hurt her. I've got full Dynomat and heat insulation installed (no heat from floorboards!) but it's just not enough. Rolling down the window makes it much worse too! Jamie, how did it sound when I passed you? I wasn't getting on it but it was droning as we went by. Letting off at a high RPM makes it crackle like glasspacks too - ick! Honestly guys, if you lose a few HP but get a quiet car it's worth it! No hassles from the cops and folks don't know what's under the hood. Right now I can't sneak up on anyone As ligth as these cars are a few HP shouldn't lose you any races and it's worth saving your hearing. My ears are ringing righ tnow just a bit - not cool... Guest Anonymous
I'm using the summit racing turbo on a single 3" and its a bit louder than I like really. Its deep but it does drone a bit as well. Its not a shocker, the old Z exhaust did too. I'm going to try a resonator tip (well I'm actually going to build a baffled tip because the tip is so short coming out of the turbo muffler. Eventually I want to go turbo so if I can knock the drone out of the system a bit it'll be great. To put it in perspective though, mine is not cotton in the ears loud , just noticable. I suspect though that I'll need a bullet in the tunnel somewhere and that ain't happening for a while I've done two systems under the car now and thats quite enough of that for now thank you.... Guest Anonymous
A buddy of mine with a very loud Pro7 rx/13B rotay put in presilencers. I don't know which brand, but he claims they are very low restriction. He has borla muffs out the back on a 2 1/2" system. If you guys are interested I'll ask about the brand. I was thinking about using them since I really don't want to attract too much attention. jon
Guest zfan
Hey guys look at the spintech's they are awsome. good sound not to loud but healthy and no glass pack sound. From what Iv'e heard from people who have heard my car they say it sounds somewhat like flowmasters but a little quietter. And of course they make them so they can fit under car with no clearance issues, they hang down no further than pipe itself. Only drawback is two mufflers are 268.00 with shipping included. Sound is no problem, windows up or down. Good thing is no more exhaust hassles! Mike
z ya
My dad has the car chemistry inserts behind his small block 280. He tried them with a H pipe and dual 2.5 pipes but it was way too loud. He had the 3 disc quiet ones too! Now he just installed some 2 chamber flows with them and it has a nice sound. I just put some 2 chamber delta flows on my wifes 01 GT stang and they sound great but with very little inside droning. I am either going to go with those or the spintechs. Guest super280z
hey guy's i'm a little concerned about the effect in the powerband using the 2 or 3 ring silencers. i was looking at the specs on their site (posted above) and the fact that they dont show any numbers above 4k has me a little leery. i'm considering installing some Turbo tube mufflers in the 2.5" sections. i think this should help considerably. the cool thing about these is that they are the same size as the pipe = no clearance problems . anyway thats just my 2 cents. oh and BTW Bill, im in Corpus [ September 16, 2001: Message edited by: Super280z ]
BLKMGK
Super - tell me more about the turbo tube stuff please. Price and where to source it. I grabbed a set of the Edelbrocks after MUCH pondering over the Spintech's. Price and size (width) is what led me to the Edelbrock's and they were STILL too wide (for MY app). Also note that the Edelbrock mufflers are stainless, the Spintechs are NOT unless you pay still more. I've had the older Flow's and they rusted like mad - given a choice I want stainless. Unfortunatly the bullet's I'm considering now aren't stainless but with as tall a tire as I've got ground clearance isn't an issue right now. Guest Tom Scala
I think all turbo tubes use a 2" core despite the connection size although I'm not totally sure. It's basically just a chambered pipe with no packing made by Walker. They used these as a factory option on some Chevelle SS's and Camaros in the late 60's for a few months but they wouldn't pass federal noise requirements and were discontinued. I've heard them before on a restored Yenko Camaro and they were LOUD.
Guest super280z
Tom, youre absolutely right. most of them were standard issue on some of the Yenko's of old. i've been wondering why more people dont use them on Z's... it seems to me that 20 bucks apice is an awesome price from summit. 2.5" in/out. the cool thing here is that by combining 3 total silencers you might be able to quite a motor down signifigantly. BLKMGK, they used to be listed in summit im not sure of the pn. it seems to me like that was quite a while ago. ok i found a link but no price info its at the bottom right probably not the best link but their something like that. walker/dynomax/thrush is the co. that makes them i hope this helps. labrat
Thanks for the info, Zya, i wanted someone's input who had actually used them before spending money on them. I guess I will go w/the spintech as well... Thanks! Bill
z ya
I was just on spintech's site and it looks like their pro street mufflers are only 69 bucks! They are 4x6x12. Hmmm?????? I just want to hear them first.
Guest Anonymous
Gentlemen, Recently installed a Borla XR1 race muffler on a Scarab to replace the original. Much quieter and no loss of power compared to straight pipes, as is advertised by Borla. Twin 2.5's from Sanderson QP 1000 headers into a single 3" to the Borla with a 3.5" Borla tip. Now I am an old man but my Scarab looks and sounds so good I feel like I was 25 again when I drive it. I strongly recommend the Borla as well as the Sanderson Headers. pparaska
Now, I know it's just a plain, boring aluminized steel muffler, but the Dynomax Super Turbo has low back pressure and flows well, but has a decent amount of noise reduction and a nice tone. The Borla is sweet too, but the Dynomax is less than $40.
