Swap Tip: Do not use composite gaskets for the header collector

Recommended Posts

They'll burn through in under 150 miles. I, like many others here (after a quick search), developed two large exhaust leaks at each header collector gasket. The JTR headers have a floating flange that does not lie flush with the flange on the exhaust pipes. The flange floats on the sealing "ring" of the headers. This ring provides around an 1/8-in. sealing surface which is not enough. I burned through my gaskets in under 150 miles.

Save yourself some grief and install either dead soft aluminum or copper collector gaskets.

Well, I have used the dead soft AL gaskets for over 10,000 miles on the swap. The paper gasket also do last but if your car runs hot or is running near lean, you will pop those gaskets in 150 miles....ask me how I know? (Joe will chime in on how I almost runined his engine blah blah blah.....)
