brianZortiz
I got a call from my machine shop, he told me my head needs 20 thousands shaved to get it flat. Its for my L28et motor, the head holds pressure and its good with no cracks. I know shaving will bump up the compression but the head has never been resurfaced. Ive read that 1-1.5 thousands is like a cleanup and can get away without shims. I will be running no more than 17psi and DD at 12-14 psi. I was wondering if I can get away without shimming or will I need to shim to get the chain nice and tight? Input welcome.. -Brian
yarddogg77
The chain will be tight, not sure how far off your timing will be after milling. Probably not much. I would just have it milled and get the spacer gasket.
brianZortiz
Thanks! But the spacer gasket? I don't know what that is.
yarddogg77
Thanks! But the spacer gasket? I don't know what that is. With most engines you can buy thicker gaskets designed exactly for what you need. They make up for material removed from head milling. I'm not sure if you can find em for an L28 but I'm sure they must be somewhere. I've saw mention of one on a website written by a guy who shaved his head on a N/A simply for more compression. He also mentioned that if goin this route a few things needed to be changed. I can't remember the specifics. Here's the link. http://datsunzgarage.com/p90/
rejracer
You will need to buy the correct cam tower shims. I would not use the head gasket thickness to compensate for shaving the head. Ideal chamber setup is more important that the trouble you will go through getting the cam towers shimmed and the right thickness lash pads. brianZortiz
@yarddogg77 I've seen that link, he shaved 80thou. I will look into the thicker gasket but it seems shim kits are available at a really cheap price. @rejracer what do you think about this? http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/10-1151 I'm thinking this can work. And I have stock l28et p90 lash pads. Do you know what thickness I need to look at?
rejracer
Those are the shims I am thinking of. I don't know what lash pads you will need, that depends on the wipe pattern you end up with on the rocker arms. Because you are only taking off .020, I would install the shims and then check the wipe pattern.
