L28et Timing Issue

Hi:

I just got my L28et rebuilt and back in the car. Now I have problems again. First off the car won't idle unless something is leaning on the throttle just a touch, and the timing is waaaaay too far advaced (30+ degrees) even though I have the distributer set to the fully retarded position (which i'm thinking is the reason it wont idle). My engine builder assured me the timing marks were perfect and I assumed there shouldnt be a problem. I took the distributer cap off and double checked that the rotor in the distributer was set at cylinder 1 and the crank timing mark was right at 0. Still the timing is waaaay advanced. Then I tried to set the rotor to fire for cylinder 1 and this time I put the crank marking just a bit past 0 into the negative zone. The car wouldnt run all I got was a bunch of cranking and then one loud backfire.

Im lost guys please help a brotha out!! I just wanna enjoy my rebuilt L28et after more than a year of sitting!!
