Poundz9oh9
Sitting, just like I picked her up a week ago. Worked on and off this past week getting her started and I'll be dropping the tank this weekend to have it boiled out and resealed. Subsequently, I was able to drive it for the first time even though it was just a limp to get it turned around in the garage. Anyway, here's the beginning, as I start with a MOSTLY original 63k car.... Sorry So many ...
MrCleburn
Looks like a sweet project! Thats awesome you got all the original wheel blocks and everything still in the packaging, and the dash looks great. What are your plans for it as far as drivetrain goes? You gonna keep it auto or drop a 5 speed in there? -Pat Edited March 10, 2012 by MrCleburn
Vintage-TechZ
Nice start Marcus ! I bet you've already got the mods all planned out ?! Edited March 10, 2012 by Vintage-TechZ
Poundz9oh9
Nice start Marcus ! I bet you've already got the mods all planned out ?! I do, I do .. First up is ditching the auto for a 4 speed just so I'll enjoy driving it at least while everything else (and part collecting) is underway .. well, once the fueling issue is sorted out (hopefully with have my tank back by the middle of the week .. Also either needs some major adjustment up top or the head is going to need some warming over .. Then coilovers/struts/bushings/wheels/brakes Then CV conversion w/R200 or Q45 or R230 swap .. this leaky R180's gotta go Then bodywork (new frame rails too) and paint (thinking GM 21U - Laser Blue metallic), 240 bumper conversion up front, shaving the side markers and rear end, black zg flares, chromed celica fender mirrors ... and hopefully a decent hood Then Motor swap ... LSx (ish) T56 is what I'm planning now .. waiting to catch a helluva deal on an LSA or LS9 and T56 Funny, I was sitting back looking at the interior of the car today. When I first picked it up, I couldn't wait to get rid of this off white stuff, but the more I look at it, the more it's really starting to grow on me. I think I'll keep it! Sorta-kinda looking for similar to this ... Only more tuck and no stretch.
Poundz9oh9
Put in a little work this weekend .. Tank was a breeze to get out after I broke off all of the seized hose clamps! You can't beat me Z! Let's have a looksee shall we? Hmmm getting closer DOH!!!! I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit .. Worse than I expected .. but to the radiator shop she goes tomorrow!
Poundz9oh9
So, I'm still waiting on the tank to be done, but it's ok though it's only been a couple days. Since I can't drive it anyway, I decided to tear the suspension up and send it off to have coilovers and Illuminas fitted. My last Z had MSA springs and Tokico blues (if I remember correctly) and I loved the way it handled, so I'm assuming that going this route will make me even more pleased. Spindle pin removal. Took me about 5 minutes to get this far and that was with using 2 minutes to set the scene for the pic And about 55 minutes later ... Don't hate Edited March 15, 2012 by Poundz9oh9
Poundz9oh9
I'm never doing this again! Took this after putting in a good solid "dilly dallying" 5 or 6 hours worth ... Another hour or so and a trip to the parts store later ... And it's ready for coilovers! Now, just have to update the ball joints, bushings, tie rod ends, and brakes while I'm waiting for the suspension to come back. Ugh .. I'm spent Edited March 17, 2012 by Poundz9oh9
Poundz9oh9
OK, so I put in another couple days of solid work as part of this last weekends festivities. So, I got the tank cleaned up and undercoated on the outside (pulled my rear bumper shocks out while I had the tank out as well). My wife calls me a pack rat because I save little things like these And this is why ... resealed the bumper shock holes with blue 280zx interior trim pieces Silicone under the head and undercoated underneath the hatch Tanks ready to go back in. A little spit and wiggle and this sucker went right back on with no issues! Well worth the money to have gas this clear flowing!!! All buttoned up for now. Woot Woot !! This is where I sat in the car for about 10 minutes while it was idling with the AC on .. taking it in ... Next up, tackling the tap in the top end .. praying for just an adjustment .. probably will mean a rebuilt head though .. ugh On a good note though, I shipped out my strut housings to be sectioned and fitted for coilovers and ordered my front LCA's from T3 ... Definitely excited to get this thing out of the garage in a few weeks!!! Edited March 19, 2012 by Poundz9oh9
Poundz9oh9
Just a little busy work for the day Dyed the cargo area carpet, getting it ready to sew on the decorative patch This patch has been on my shelf for years and I finally decided to do something with it
cockerstar
Just checked the tracking number MSA gave me, and the illuminas should be in by the end of the day today! As we previously discussed, I have the ground control coilovers and your strut tubes in hand. They'll definitely be on their way back to you within a week's time as the most. I didn't realize you had a build thread going, but now that I know I'll snap a few pics along the way for your documentation
Poundz9oh9
Sweet man, Thanks! Yeah, like I told you the other day, I'm trying to document EVERYTHING this time around, to include making a build thread for the added pics! Hope my wife doesn't see it
Poundz9oh9
GREAT news! Did a hot valve adjustment and she purrs like a kitten. Tackled a few more odds and ends over the weekend (will post pics up later) Dyed all the carpeting back to it's original black. Rewired the aftermarket stereo that was in there and got it working again. Pulled the rear control arms to freshen up a bit. Started on a little crack repair for the center console. Started on the shave of the rear end. Had my rotors and drums resurfaced. Ordered F/R sway bar end link kits and new tie rod ends. I'm REALLY done spending money now ... for a little bit anyway ... I think .. lol On a side note, I think I have a touch of ADD. All these things were accomplished all at the same time from bouncing back and forth between them. For some reason, I just couldn't sit and do just one thing at a time1 LOL Edited March 26, 2012 by Poundz9oh9

Poundz9oh9
That's classic, lol. Shhhhhhhhh .... It's funny how I've strategically planned my initial mods to be essentially invisible on purpose, while still having a great impact on the cars direction Again, I hope she never finds this thread . Poundz9oh9
Oh my ..... Getting so close to putting it back together!! I'm excited, can you tell? Taking a break from working on her this weekend to do the Dallas Tough Mudder!! Wish me luck! Edited April 2, 2012 by Poundz9oh9
Poundz9oh9
Tough Mudder was great, had a blast and wasn't nearly as hard as I though it was going to be. Coilovers should be here on Monday (whew - dodged the bullet of my wife possibly seeing them if the showed up on saturday. Sold the last of the parts from my last car and immediately forwarded the moolah to a HybridZ member for a 5 speed tranny swap package which should be here in a couple weeks Time to get started on putting the suspension and brakes together, what I can anyway in preparation of the coilovers arrival. Funny, I'll have this thing on the road for about a week before I put it up on jackstands to do the tranny swap! Definitely have mucho to do! Having a blast !! Poundz9oh9
Got the suspension pieces back the other day and have been just kind of piddling around with it. A couple family emergencies for the week kind of kept me away from it but here's where we're at. Finally "home" Getting the party started! Hoping to have it on down on all fours tomorrow!
