Shemyazaz
Thought I would go ahead and start a progress thread here. I'm through with mount and crossmember fabrication, and all the test fitting that goes with it. Just about time to start assembling parts. This is a stock 302 out of an 87 Lincoln Town Car. Along with an AOD. Not really bothering with much in the way of engine mods until I get it up and running. Only "performance" parts are the explorer intake, injectors, and the headers. I will be controlling the whole thing with a MSII using an EDIS trigger assembly. Expecting something like 210hp flywheel. Here are some pics of the test fit. Along with the header clearancing and motor mount tack. Here are the finished motor mounts and transmission crossmember. Along with a painted header just for kicks. Mike kZ
Nice progress, but I would double check those engine mount welds. The welds look like they have not penetrated, and are sitting on top.

Shemyazaz
Got the brake lines worked out this weekend. Also did some fiber glassing where the battery box used to be. Need to buy front rotors and hardware before I can pressure it up and see if it explodes or anything. As soon as I'm sure there are no leaks and finish plugging holes/painting. I can begin to put stuff in it for the last time.
Shemyazaz
Just ordered the rest of the brake hardware. Hopefully it will be in this weekend so I can get some more done. I hope to finish up the engine bay and get the motor set back in so I can measure for driveshaft.
Shemyazaz
Brake hardware won't be here this weekend since partsgeek is slow. I'll have to settle for putting some gauges in the dash, and making sure the motor is ready to go in.
Shemyazaz
Brake lines held pressure. finished prepping the engine bay. Looks like next weekend I get to install the engine and trans and actually mean it. Slowly but surely.
Shemyazaz
Getting closer. Next weekend will be all about the trigger wheel, and hose routing. Which should end with the upper manifold installed, and the beginnings of figuring out throttle and trans. Shemyazaz
Just a quick udate. Haven't been posting play by play or anything like that since nobody seems interested. Got the upper intake installed. A bracket made for the coils. various sensors mounted. Trigger wheel centered and attached, along with its pickup. got the throttle and trans link figured out. (Made bell cranks. When was the last time you saw one of those?)Put the radiator in. Hopefully my guages will ship this week so I can reinstall the dash this weekend. yellowoctupus
Are those motorcycle spoke bell cranks? Awesome. I made a set of linkages up for my dad in his '40 Chevy P/U out of snowmobile steering tie rods, and they came out surprisingly well. But, interestingly enough, when the engine settled in the mounts finally they needed readjusting.... I guess you still have the stock through the firewall adjustment if you need it. There's interest here (so keep posting!!), but it's not the same number of comments when you have a build post going together. My build post has 27 posts currently, and 5 were from other people. Keep truckin, it's looking good!
Shemyazaz
Nope. Those are rounds I cut out of a bit of A36 with a hole saw. I've yet to decide if I want to leave them as discs or cut out arms. Probably going to leave them. Trying to get this thing done before the cold weather sets in. Only an idiot would do this to his only source of warm transportation....
yellowoctupus
I was referring to the rods themselves (in the one picture it looked like the non-cotterpinned end was a spoke end, I think I was just seeing the piece of steel with a reflection...). PS. Thanks for the more recent smaller pictures, the others were tough to view even on my 20" screen. Trevor
Haven't been posting play by play or anything like that since nobody seems interested Keep the build story and details coming! We can always use the shared & collected knowledge...and inspriation. I noticed that late 80's non-H.O. 5.0L (like the Town Car) have the stock accessories like A/C, Alt, and Power steering pump swapped sides with the Mustang H.O. Wondered if there was a connection to the intake pointing the other way as well. Edited September 25, 2012 by Trevor
Shemyazaz
The intake can be mounted either direction. The problem that I encountered is the fuel rails from the explorer....the nice chrome ones with the flow through design...has the regulator on the wrong side. Had to use the town car rail....which isn't nearly as nice. I think the throttle bodies are arranged differently as well, but I'm not sure. I'll dig up pictures as I have a side by side (for size comparison)
Shemyazaz
Nope. Same stuff. Well....slightly different armature. Not like that makes a big difference if you are fabbing linkages and such anyway. Edited September 25, 2012 by Shemyazaz
yellowoctupus
Wow! Those butterflies are not even comparable in size!! Which one came off which car? Is the Towncar's on the right, the Explorer's on the left?
Shemyazaz
Yup. I didn't take any pictures of it, but the SO upper intake is very small as well.
Shemyazaz
Guages finally shipped. Took them two weeks. They will not be here in time to install this weekend....damnit.
Shemyazaz
Got the dash back in. All the guage wiring and such is done. Feels like this is taking forever....and the weather has not been on my side the past couple weeks.
74_5.0L_Z
Got the dash back in. All the guage wiring and such is done. Feels like this is taking forever....and the weather has not been on my side the past couple weeks. Is that ice on the windshield? I worked in the garage this past weekend, and I was complaining about the heat (92 F). I would much rather be hot than cold.
