joker81
Hey guys, I have a 72 240z and for the last 3 months I have had a problem with my flashers that i just cannot figure out for the life of me. When i activate my right side flasher, everything is fine and dandy. Activating the left side flasher is where the fun starts, when i activate the left side, all the flashers flicker as if i were on my hazards. I read a few posts here and there that said the problem was probably with the hazard flasher unit itself, so like a dummy I bought a refurbished unit of Ebay for $150. That didn't fix a single thing. I am desperate guys...Has anyone had this issue? Any suggestions? If I could fix this it would help start 2013 on the right foot.
Xnke
Find the bad ground on the left side of the car. Get out your FSM and trace wiring.
Kurbycar32
I suspect a problem in your combination switch and would attempt repair in this order: 1. Replace both of your thermal flashers. mine were $1.99 at oriely auto 2. After that doesnt work you should remove the combination switch from your steering column and "refurbish" it. basically clean everything and ensure all electrical contacts are mating correctly. Bend connections back together, remove corrosion, clean and lubricate joints. i did this on my 260z and it fixed a bunch of problems
joker81
Hey Kirby Probably a stupid question...But what is a thermal flasher? Are those in the steering column somewhere.
Kurbycar32
You should have 2 of these on the upper left of the drivers side foot area. This is the thing that actually makes the blinkers blink, your car has one for turn signals and another for hazards. Since they are inexpensive and fail often you should start with new ones. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Tridon-Turn-Signal-Flasher/_/N-9cjef?itemIdentifier=69839_0_0_

joker81
So as long as it's a 12V source it will work? Reason I ask is i'm having a hard time finding a place that sells these who will ship to Canada.
joker81
This to me...seems to be the same? right? http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-FLASHER-552-536-THERMAL-AUTO-TURN-SIGNAL-FLASHER-NEW-2-PRONG-VICTOR-/200770197942?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ebed619b6&vxp=mtr
Kurbycar32
you should be able to find them at any auto parts store, even walmart has a few here where i live. Just pull one out and bring it into the store for matching. Like i said, you probably have a more serious problem like a bad ground or a messed up combination switch (the combination switches get eaten on these cars) but since you have never changed these out it couldn't hurt and is one less variable moving forward. If you aren't skilled enough in electrical you might consider sending your combination switch in for service. A guy on the classic z car forums does it (Zs-ondabrain) as well as some guy on ebay and I'm sure a bunch of other people.

His name is Dave and he is also a HybridZ member as well: HLS30-08077 Typically, the turn signal switch just needs cleaning and adjustment of the copper contacts inside. Do a search as it has been discussed many times and there are several "how to repair" the turn signal switch threads. If the HybridZ search doesn't return any hits do a Google search in this format: site: hybridz.org turn signals You should also search at Classic Z Car Edited January 2, 2013 by Miles
