For 76 280z, what is NOT needed under the hood?

So, I have a 76 280z, and I need to rebuild the engine(rod knock). I will be pulling it soon, and while I am at it will be cleaning up the engine bay of dirt, grease, surface rust(if there is any), and everything else. So, my question is this: What can I remove and still be functional under the hood?

More thoughts:

  • I want to remove all AC and heat. Heater is in under the dash and leaks. Can I just close the loop by not running any hose into the cabin and having it go straight from the head back into the radiator? Or should I block off the output in the head. The spot on the head might be an input, I forget which way the loop goes.
  • How much of the vacuum system can be done without? Especially if removing the AC/heater system? Seeing as I know it has some control some parts of it.
  • What about those fuses? on the right side? I dont have my service manuals with me, I forget their purpose and what they actually are. Is there a way to replace them with something more modern? and smaller?
  • Aftermarket fuel rail? I hate the ugly clutter of the current design. It's a pain to remove too. I understand a non-egr manifold may be necessary to make this part easy.
  • The rubber the is in between the intake and the AFM. Is there a replacement for this? That isn't rubber? or something or other.

1. You do not want to look the heater hose to the rear of the head. It would be better to block them off. Read up on that and search this site for the "why".

2. Vacuum is really only required for the dizzy, fpr, charcoal canister, brake booster, and some parts of the TB/BCCD, not sure about 280z's but my 280zx had a black canister thing right near the passanger side strut tower that controlled al the vacuum for the AC system. Threw that in the trash.

3. The fuses are for the car, you need those. unless you want to just burn up your entire harness.

4. Cleaning up the fuel rail will get rid of half the "spaghetti" on your engine. Pallnet and Cockerstar (both members here) can make you a fuel rail. You do not need the non EGR manifold, but it will really help the look.

5. That is the AFM boot, you can buy a new one without the fittings for the hoses that go to the TB and manifold.

You should keep your PCV system also. You can get rid of your EGR system if you do it correctly. You don't need your cold start injector.

Just read up on this site, look at peoples builds, etc..

If your talking about the fusable links under neath the hood by the battery, you can clean it up quite a bit. I havent done the conversion yet, but I have seen many Z's with it done. i plan to do it later, looks very simple to do.
