RebekahsZ
Any drag racers out there who can tell me if this slick wear is normal? The rubber seems to be peeling off. Had terrible traction this weekend at the track. Wear is JUST to the bottom of the wear holes. This is how they look after about 100 passes; this was how they looked right after the last run. Have been running 13# hot in them; tires are mounted on 7" rims with rim screws. Traction was terrible last night after being really good initially at the beginning of the season. Have I over-heated them with too long of a burn out? Too many heat cycles? Is my alignment goofed up? Is this just normal wear and I need to chill if my next set does the same thing? skirkland1980
Looks normal but a long burnout is not necessary. Just spin the water a trash off them. Just a hint of smoke. Don't burnout in the water. Just a few revolutions of the tires in the water, then pull out and then spin the tires.
RebekahsZ
Never followed up on this. An extra long burnout cleaned the tires up. I had a buddy go into water box with me. Short burnout did nothing to clean up tires so I did a long burnout=tire smooth as a baby's butt and car started hooking up again.
tube80z
Here's some really good info on understanding tire wear patterns and what they mean. http://www.formulastudent.de/academy/pats-corner/advice-details/article/tyres/2/ Hope this helps, Cary
RebekahsZ
Wow! That's great. Look at how long this post has been laying around for help. Thanks-I read every word of that article. I have started storing my tires in trash bags in a climate controlled storage room (thanks to the antiques my in-laws left us but don't have room for). My wife thinks the $200 a month rent is for the antiques but it is really for my tires! I knew to let my drag slicks down to 10psi (gotta keep some pressure in them to avoid tubes wadding up), but i didnt know to let the air out of my other tires. I wasted a set of nee BFG R1s by letting them get hot and turn blue-just light $100 bills on fire. They never regained any traction-were worse than 400 wear schedule street tires. My current A6s really got chunked up last race due to a super rough surface. I can't seem to keep rocks out of my gummy tires, so much so that I'm gonna break down and put some undercoating on the rear half of my inner fenders. The tires load up with rocks between the finish and the paddock. Thanks again for your help-really appreciate it.
