skirkland1980
Hello. I just finished assembling a ms2 v3.0 board for my 1983 datsun 280zx turbo. My car already has a ms2 v3.57 and is running good. I removed the daughter card from the v3.57 and installed into the new v3.0. The car will not run or connect to tuner studio. Same results with the stim. I preformed the voltage and ground tests as per the assembly instructions at the 40 pin socket, all are good. I also checked 5v and ground at the db9 and is good. Everything appears to be installed on the board and soldered well with no bridging. The only leftover parts I have are for the squarewave ign input which I am using vr. Thanks....Shane
winstonusmc
Did you loop back the serial port as per the instructions? If it won't connect to tuner studio then its a problem with the serial port assembly.
skirkland1980
I didn't do that. I did ohm the db9 connector. The car should still run. I'm using a known good processor.
winstonusmc
U6 may be having some issues. Check its VCC input. You might be having voltage issue, I fried the 5v power supply and it would make 5v until it pulled a load. Did you check voltages in other areas with the processor installed? There are a few jumpers you could check. Edited November 2, 2013 by winstonusmc
skirkland1980
I only cheeked at the processor and the serial connector. I check into it some more tonight. Thanks
skirkland1980
Update: I cleaned the board with acetone and tried to connect. Now it says it found the controller but there is no firmware loaded. I pulled the processor out and put it in another 3.0 board and it still connects fine. skirkland1980
I've made progress. Apparently xg1 and xg2 need to be jumpered. The only place in the assembly instructions this is mentioned is under hall sensor, optical sensor applications. So I jumpered them and now I'm communicating. New problem, no tach signal: I have tachselect jumpered to vrin and tsel to vrout. I also adjusted the trimpots. Thanks, Shane...
skirkland1980
Looks like I may have broken the trim pots.
mobythevan
It is OK to turn the trim pots too far, the just slip/click at the end of the range.
skirkland1980
I removed r56 and measured resistance while making adjustments and I don't get any change. I'm not sure what's going on.
mobythevan
I'm not trying to be condescending, but if you are on the wrong leads of the POT it will not change while making adjustments. You need to measure between the "wiper" and one of the other two leads (either one works)
skirkland1980
Started working on this again. Now it will not connect to tuner studio. I pulled the cpu out and put it in the 3.0 board that I fried at that one will connect fine. Same thing happens when I try a ms1 cpu. Maybe u6 is bad? All the diodes and polarized caps are oriented correctly.
loy
Yes please check the max232 ic(u6). http://www.megamanual.com/connect.htm
skirkland1980
Great! It's communicating again. My problem was here, continuity between pin 12 of the MAX232 to CPU pin 13. A bad solder connection. Now back to the issue of tach input. Still no rpm on the stim. Thanks again loy. It's hard for me to fine what I need sometimes from my phone. loy
What are you using as input VR or hall Effects?
skirkland1980
I'm using an 83 vr distributor. I'm thinking about using a gm hei module and maybe a pullup resistor for tach input. Any idea how to do that?

To do a pull up a resistor, take the line you want to pull up and connect a resistor (1k) to it and 12v.
skirkland1980
It's still connected. I will remove it and retry. Thanks
Metro
With a VR sensor you don't really need to do anything other than connect the correct jumpers. The stim should give you rpm without any trouble, but in car, you will need to play with the trim pots a bit to clean up the signal. So basically, if you don't have any RPM on the stim, you might want to check the whole circuit for bad components/solders.
skirkland1980
Ok. I cut the xg1/xg2 jumper and it still connects to TS. I stand corrected there from my first post. But still no rpm on the stim. I'll try it in the car when the snow melts. I think I'm going to try a gm 7pin module to trigger ms.
