Guest Anonymous
Alright, help me build my dream. I want a Z for $10,000. I figure I can find a decent Z with little to no rust for $3,000-$3,500 or a slightly sh!ttier Z that needs some body work, but for the body itself, I'm planning on around $3,000. Then for the engine, I found this http://www.atk-engines.com/highperf.html . If you don't feel like checking the link, it is a rebuilt chevy 350, $1,599, warranty, dyno'd at 245hp and 328 torque. So, between the car and the engine, I'm hoping to get the engine in the car and running for $5,000-$6,000. So, that leaves $4,000 for fun. I want rims and it dropped a bit, so figure another $1,000-$1,500. Then for the last $2,500-$3,000, I want more speed, definately a blower (because nothing says bawlz like a blower) and other stuff. So help me out, can you give me more specific information? Will this engine be good, what am I looking for in the car, and especially what sh!t should I do to the engine, what type of blower, how much hp should I be able to get this thing to, etc etc. So help me fill out my dream basically, if ya'll wouldn't mind. Tim240z
If you're planning on forced induction, I don't think that motor will live. Also, for only a few hundred more you could get a SBC which puts out 350 plus HP. Don't forget to budget for tranny, drive shaft, rear end, fuel pump, radiator, fan, hoses, belts, brake upgrades, engine dress up stuff, conversion parts (motor mounts etc), exhaust, and so on. If you are wise with your cash, you should be able to do it. Wait until the conversion is running before spending on nicey nicey stuff IMO. Hope this helps, Tim PS, do a search for specifics, you WILL find the info you need....it's been done and someone has written about it. Guest Anonymous
Alright, I knew there was all sorts of sh!t was forgetting. I don't know jack about cars, but as soon as I get out of school I'm settling myself down to this project and learn myself good . Can you hook me up with a link to a page on the SBC? What rear end stuff needs to be done? Hadn't thought about that. What tranny/drive shaft swaps well and can easily be picked up at a yard? How much am I looking at for motor mounts too? I've heard all sorts of different figures for the mounts. If I can get a 350 pushing 350hp, I don't think I'd feel a need for much more speed so the blower could be forgotten about, but the rims I need. About how much am I looking at for all that, tranny, drive shaft, rear end, fuel pump, radiator, fan, hoses, belts, brake upgrades, engine dress up stuff, conversion parts (motor mounts etc), exhaust. What do you mean by engine dress up stuff? I need to factor in sway bars as well, correct? Oh, and $50 for the swap manual.
Tim240z
DEFINITELY buy the JTR manual before you go any further. Get a catalogue from Summit, PAW, and the like. It will give you an idea of prices. Spend a few hours searching through posts here (search function) I'm sure that all of you questions will be answered. BTW dress up items refers to pretty stuff like chrome valve covers, timing covers etc. Check out places like Scoggin Dicky Chevrolet for crate motor prices. They always have ads in the hot rod mags. Good Luck with your project, Tim
DavyZ
Clumzy, If you do go blower, then make sure the engine has forged pistons etc. I think your move to an engine with 350 hp is better, at least for the time being. As Tim suggested, take a look for a motor--there are lots of crate engine builders and many advertise in places like Super Chevy, Chevy High Performance, Car Craft, Hot Rod, et al. Just do research, make lists, and use the search function on this site to gather the info. And, do all this after reading and rereading the JTR book. Good luck!
