Guest raystorm280z
Hello, I'm considering doing the 3.1L stroker with a F54 block that I can get for a really good deal. I've never really done something like this, and would like to hear some of your opinions of whether this can be done with the engine I'm looking at or not. Here are some pics... It's pretty rusty, and I was told had a little more than 100,000 miles on it when it was pulled. It looks pretty bad, but the price is really low (under $100). Do you think its a lost cause? From what I read from The Datsun Workshop the F54 block can be bored out by a lot, so maybe the block would be alright... But do you think it would be better (for my car/wallet ) to spend more for a block that is in better condition? How much do F54 blocks in "good" condition run? Thanks for any help, looks like I have a long way to go
DAW
You're not going to use the crank, and it will be way overbored so don't worry about the condition of the cyl walls...it looks like a good place to start on your project. DAW
Mudge
Yep, doesn't really matter since your going to clean it all up anyway with the bore. The one I have was found for $90, although it has 175k miles on it or so. Stroker is way more than I'd want to spend, I'd rather go V8, so this one will probably be a budget refresh with new bearings/rings.
Guest Anonymous
What do you have to do to the block to get that big of an engine? And, who makes pistons for the L-6 engines other than stock?
z-ya
That's a turbo block! All F54 NAs came with flat top pistons. For a 3.0, all you need is 9mm L24 rods, KA24 (240SX) pistions and bore it 3mm. For a 3.1, you need the above, plus a diesel crank, and you'll need to flycut the pistions too. Pete
JoeinCA
hey, ive got an f54 block engine sitting on my side yard (on an engine stand) with a p79 head on it... it may be a bit cleaner on the inside.. if you'd like to see it let me know and i'll take some pictures of it for you... I'd let it go for $70-80 if you pick it up. Joe
Z-Gad
I would recommend anyone doing a 3mm overbore to have the block sonic tested first. It'll cost you ~$100, but that is much cheaper than having to do another block when you find out the hard way that the walls were too thin. I went through 3 blocks before I found one suitable for that large of a bore. If the water passages have been corroded too much, the cylinder wall (especially between the #5 and #6 cylinder) can be really thin and have the potential of cracking. Mudge
The 3.1 is mega expensivo, I wouldn't recommend that to anyone but someone who wanted the most cubes from a stock looking engine, and who of course had a big wallet.
Guest raystorm280z
Thanks for all the help. I know that the 3.1 Stroker isn't the most efficient way to go, but I like the ideal of keeping an L-series engine in the my Z. It'll probably bite me in the butt, but for now I think its what I'm aiming for. Thanks again!
Mudge
I'd rather go for big bore 3.0L, but I guess those extra 6 cubes are that tempting huh?
Guest Anonymous
I know that it was said to use 9mm L24 rods, are they the same as L26 rods or is the lenght different? I have the L26 rods on hand.
Guest raystorm280z
Mudge, good point. I think I got excited after I read the 3.1 article from The Datsun Workshop . Either way I'm going to have to find and clean up a F54 block, and I'll probably just go on from there. Hopefully I can find some literature on the 3.0, and can weigh the two. Mudge
260/240 rods are NOT the same. http://www.zhome.com/rnt/3.1HanveyProject.htm 3.1 L Stroker Myths and Legends Revealed! 171 cubes versus 189 cubes, sure tempting but not worth the massive investment for me. I'll stick to 2.8L
