PhaTTy
OK.. I got myself a P-90 head from a salvage yard and stuck it on my '83 non-turbo 280zx .. Now once it is all back together I am getting some bad smoke out the tailpipe.. At idle it is very visible and when you give it gas, it is smog city behind and around the car. I was wondering what may be causing this. I believe it was smokin a bit before the head change also. The sensor light is on on the digital dash also, and I have no idea what to check/change. Any ideas on either of these problems with be appreciated.
Cruez
Check the sensor on the pass side of the block... I have seen it cause the same symptoms..
Guest smoov280zx
The sensor on the passenger side of the head is the cylinder head temp sensor. If i read correctly, it does affect enrichment when the engine is started cold. If it's bad, it might be constantly enriching the mixture, i'm no expert though, just an opinion. Then only other thing on that side is the oil pressure switch i think, but it's on the block. Mitch
PhaTTy
Do you know what that sensor does? I really need to get an 83 factory service manual for the car.. It's driving me nuts trying to diagnose this stuff with the 79 manual heh
Mudge
Black smoke = pig rich.

Mudge
Mitch is probably right, at colder temps cars run rich until warmed up, and then often at very HOT temps they will run rich again and timing should be retarded (if the computer is that complex on your early car). If you continue to run rich your O2 will also get whacked eventually
PhaTTy
Hrmm.. could this cause the overflow to engage after only 5 minutes of idling? This happened the other day it seemed to heat up very quickly.
PhaTTy
OK.. another one.. what would cause the sensor light to come on... 2nd.. I cleaned the contacts on the head temperature sensor, but I was looking at places on prices for new ones and noticed nobody carries it at auto parts stores? Does it go by a different sensor name perhaps?
Mudge
Generally, a coolant temp sensor needs to have at least about 10% or so coolant in the 'coolant.' I like to run distilled water not tap water, as tap water can leave behind deposits. Anyhow, alot of the coolant temp sensors need to have conductivity in the coolant, for this to be there often needs to be some coolant, otherwise it will show a coolant light on my newer car (is this a light that you are talking about?). Sometimes though they do just go bad, if its showing temperature though...
PhaTTy
Temperature is showing fine.. my car is an 83 280zx and has the digital dash. The top-left sensor light is the one that stays on.
