83 turbo Engine questions

Ok, I picked up my second Z this weekend, A 83 Turbo 2x2. It is suposed to be the parts car for my 83Zx NA coupe. It may end up as its own project car, not sure yet until I can check the frame. Anyway This 83 2x2 turbo comes with the P90A head, which from what I've read has Hydraulic lifters.

 

Heres my questions,

** They may be stupid but,,, when it comes to engines Im still totally clueless **

 

What are hydraulic lifters?

will having the P90a head make rebuilding this engine to expensive?

Can anyone point me to a good resource for info on the Hydraulic lifters?

One of the tractors I sell at Sears has hydraulic lifters. Its our top of the line model pushing 20hp. Man, its a beauty. oops, I guess that's not very helpful.

 

edit: just ran across an article. " The 1983 engines used a P90A head, which used hydraulic lifters. That in itself is not a bad thing, but the lifters themselves are crazy expensive to replace. And there have been internet rumors about those lifters breaking apart at sustained high rpm. Most every high performance turbo engine I've run across has gone with the earlier P90 head. Just because it's a P90A doesn't mean it has hydraulic lifters, so before you jump to conclusions, lift the valve cover and make sure.

 

And the hydraulic lifters (they are actually hydraulic pivots technically) will function perfectly fine for most performance modifications, as most folks do not raise the redline much. So if the head is in good shape, use it. If a "lifter" is bad and is not repairable, that can be another issue, as new ones cannot be found for love nor money.

I replaced all of the hydraulic lifters with mechanical pivots. I had a machine shop make mechanical bases in the diameter of the P90A lifter hole and inner thread of the mechanical pivot. It cost $260 to have all 12 made, but they are really nice pieces and it is cheaper than replacing the hydraulic lifeters (if you can find them), not to mention the rocker arms...

IMO it's not worth doing the lifter swap unless you have a lot machine work already dumped into the P90A head.

Anyways, a properly working P90A head can be a good thing. Cleaning them up with diesel will sometimes help. Could always pull a spare set out of a junk yard for insurance, and maybe some of those would be good.

Sleeper Z is right....I've been told by a few Z specialist and some other people that the Japanese version P90A heads have solid lifters. I dont think theres a large number of Japanese versions over here in the US, but take a look to see what you got in there to be 100% sure. And as for rebuilding a hydrolic lifter head, I think I saw somewhere that it cost $40-$50 per hydrolic lifter to be replaced :eek: roughly $550-$600 to replace all the hydrolic lifters with new ones, and thats not including work to the rest of the heads. Id look for a solid lifter head if yours isnt one. I see them on zcar every once in a while.
