quickdraw
I've been working on my ride for a bit... http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/119428-redux-z-76-280zt/ ...and was hoping you guys could take a quick glance at what I'm doing on the Wheels/Tires/Brakes/Etc. to make sure I am not missing anything. I've researched thoroughly in the forums and elsewhere and think where I'm headed will work but I've never worked on a car and there have already been a couple wish I would have known that obscure, poorly document thing sooner moments. Here's what I have purchased (waiting on the Rota's and tires for this fact-finding): BC Racing Coilovers Toyota & Maxima Brake conversions Standard 2.5 inch ZG flares Rota Grid-V 15's or 16's staggered. Tires? Where I'm getting a little concerned is the wheel fitment of the Rota's with the brake conversion and the tire sizing to fill up the well. Regarding the wheels, I used the recommended watanabe fitment: 15's= F: 15-8.5 -6 R: 15-9.5 -19 16's= F 16-8.5 -6 R 16-9.0 -13 Tire recommendation= F:225/50 R 245/45 ...to back into getting the Rota 15x8's in the front with a 0 offset and a 5mm spacer and 15x9's in the rear with -15 offset and a 5mm spacer. I'm sure this goes without saying but I'd like to get the largest wheel tire combo without hitting the brakes/other or rubbing. 16's seem to be a good option as well as they would fill up the well a little better. Any thoughts? or landmines I'm walking into with this setup? Tire recommendations? Thanks in advance. RebekahsZ
If "filling up" the wheel well, look into tire DIAMETER. The smaller wheel will require a taller sidewall. And yes, you are crazy-everybody on this site is. Edited November 9, 2014 by RebekahsZ
quickdraw
Diameter it is...muchas gracias. I assume I'd measure from the ground to...just inside the zgs?
quickdraw
Any thoughts on the brake swap causing trouble with the wheel setup?
RebekahsZ
16s should be fine. 15s is a gamble. Cast aluminum 15s usually clear by a gnat's ass, but spun aluminum or steel wheels are a no-go at 15". If you only clear by a gnat's ass and you do a number on your wheel with a pothole, you might get a chance to repair more than the wheel. RebekahsZ
Have you considered 17" or even 18"?
quickdraw
No not really. I've assumed fitment, etc would be a little easier plus I kinda like the smaller wheel. Should I?
RebekahsZ
Availability for 16" tires isn't very good. 17" tires are super common. 18" tires are all the rage.
rturbo 930
18s are going to look ridiculous, and there's also the weight penalty. I'd get something 16x8 to 16x9, put some 225s on. Not sure what your power goals will be, but no point in putting on more tire than you need. 24-25" diameter should fill your wheel wells up nicely. Edit, didn't read thoroughly, if you're putting on ZGs, a 9" wheel should fill it out better. Edited November 14, 2014 by rturbo
RebekahsZ
Does MiKelly's car look ridiculous? I sure don't think so. It's awesome. The tire diameter is not really any bigger because the sidewall is shorter.
Phantom
I put 16's on my car 17 years ago and they were great - then. Now I'm starting to have issues with finding good tires in the size I need. I was running a stock suspension back then but have coil-overs now. I agree with RebekahsZ. I'd go with a 17" wheel over a 15 or 16. The 15's are going to give you fits in the future with big brake fitment and the 16's will give heartburn when you try to find just the right tire. I also would not buy any wheels until the suspension is complete and you can take accurate measurements from the face of the wheel hub to the suspension and to the inside of the fender. Those dimensions seem to almost be unique to each car. Age, previously repaired body damage & previous owner modifications can conspire to bite you in the a$$ if you're not careful. quickdraw
Much appreciated phantom. I think I may have been talked in the 17s but it's taken me away from the rota grid v setup I liked. Back to the drawing board on which wheels...but that's kinda fun
