Snapping stub axles.. Now what?

There have been a couple people that have snapped the chromoly stubs from MM, and CF has them made by the same people. The limiter is the size of the shaft. regardless of the spline count, the shaft is still a fairly puny 1.25" diameter. Ultimately the 8.8 with bigger stubs from American FWD applications are going to be the best bet, but they require the switch to different brakes, struts, etc. The CF stuff is strong enough for 99% of the people out there anyway, it's the hardcore drag racers that need to worry about it. That's my $.02 anyway.

 

This is my fear. Spending $1500 on stubs and them breaking. Although I'm not a hardcore drag racer, this car has the ability to make 1000Whp and I would like to try and use as much as practically possible. I'd say that puts me out of the "norm"

 the car has the short nose R200 VLSD along with the MM axle upgrades. I'm not sure what stub axles I have as I haven't pulled them yet, pretty sure they are the stock 27spline units. I have a car on my lift at the moment. Well long story short I don't really want to deal with this crap ever again. 

 

Do you know yet what axles you were using?  35 year old stock Nissan axles, with MM CV adapters, or newer MM axles?  Just curious.  Seems like it could be a consideration.

MM axles with the R230 CV's and stock 27spline stub axles on the driver side outer (what broke) the inner I have no clue as they haven't been removed because they still work. I'm assuming this is a factory piece though as MM never made a billet inner stub axle?

30-40 on the track, same on the street.

I'm more curious how many times you've made a pass on it at your current WHP rating. Also Everyone is so wrapped up in spline count but I haven't heard much about diameter.. Wills kit uses F-150 CV/stub axles and not once does it mention the diameter of the shaft. I could care less if it had 100 splines. If the shaft was 1/4 thick it's useless.

 

Also sunny do you know how large your Z31 outer stubs are? Do you know the diameter of your inner stubs? Thanks for chiming in.

So fatigue could be a factor.

 

Upgrade options look expensive.  Even the 39 spline needs a new adapter, adding even more cost.  TTT has some alternatives for a new hub, that you could probably piece in, if you didn't want the whole kit.

Yea fatigue was defiantly the culprite here. I actually spoke with joe this morning but I couldn't bring myself to spend $1300+ on something that might fail and leave me back at square one. The Z32 looks nice but from what I understand the largest stub shaft you can fit is 1.290 which is the same size as the checkered flag units with less splines. Doesn't really makes sense to me.

 

Today I found out the F-150 CV or "outer stub shaft in wills "ultimate IRS" kit is 1.413 and that is MASSIVE compared to anything Nissan related. If his backing plates where direct copies of the 280 with the larger bore to accommodate the larger hub I would have pulled the trigger already. I'm not sure what to do.

It would have been nice for a lot of people in the community if someone would have been able to buy the rights to his business and have kept it going........

I tried. Ross's dad wouldn't not return my calls. It is shame that this business is no longer. I am told others tried too.

25 track passes at around 750 rwhp. Similar on the street.

 

Ford 8.8 Axle diameters

-28 Spline axle shafts with a 1.29" diameter

-31 Spline axle shafts with a 1.32" diameter

 

Not sure on the outers, cant find it right now. They're the 29 spline Z32 NA hubs, or the 240sx 4 lug. Same splines and size.

Seems like prep work on the axles, similar to what people do on high performance connecting rods, might help.  Removed all stress risers, massage the surfaces to distribute the load.  Make sure the companion flange is engaged to the best depth to direct and distribute the load.  Examination of where the stock axle broke might give some clues about how and why it broke.  Could be that the adapter flange caused a problem.  The same thing could happen with a bigger shaft.  It's the fine details that make the difference when you're at the limits of the design.

This is all good info. However I think I'm going to scrap the T56 and just go with an auto.. It will cost me little to nothing to get into a built trans and my rear end is built up good enough as is that white a good auto I don't have to worry about breaking stuff.
