occasional sputter and stall

Recommended Posts

The car is a 78 280z with L28ET swap. Every year or so when driving my Z it loses power runs rich (according to my air fuel gauge) and then backfires and ultimatley stalls.  ive gone over all of the wiring and did as many tests as I could according to the FSM. Everything checks out. After the stall the car will turn over but not start until I give it 20 minutes or so. Then it starts up and runs as usual. Ive cleaned all of the wiring plugs, sockets and grounds etc. After doing research I think it may be the ignition related. Maybe the coil transistor. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Rick

Hi Rick, I know this is going to be an apples and oranges thing here, but I one had a '87 Ford Escort that had the ignition module mounted to the side of the distributor, and it would do the same thing. Allowing it to cool down, and it would work fine... for a while. Eventually I had to replace it. In fact I ended up replacing it about 3 times in the 300,000 miles I drove it, but the symptoms were always exactly as you describe. Good luck!

Some more information would be nice.

Just to make sure, what are we talking about in terms of AFR numbers. Like 13? Or like 9?

Can you replicate the problem? Or is it legitimately a once a year kind of thing. If so, what time of year, any regularity? Certain conditions (rain, night, etc)?

If it comes back online after a while, I'm more willing to give it a pass on more or less the mechanical aspects. What is the voltage your car runs at?

I would be pretty happy with suggesting a new coil maybe even new wires and spark plugs.

I do want to lean towards electrical, it could be the spark gradually deteriorating, a sudden surge of fuel (stuck injector), or the interruption of spark or something related to the electrical.
