jaime240z
I'm looking at a few HID kits on ebay and was wondering if anyone has done one. There's one seller in particular that seems to have some pretty quality stuff. I read through all his feedback and it seems legit. Just wondering about the install. Seems pretty straght fowrward. I guess I just need someone to talk me into spending money on something I don't really need. BTW: my car is a'72 240 with regular headlights. I had the H-4's in but I removed them. If I do end up doing this swap I will, of course, need to go with the H-4's again. Thanks. Jaime
Cody 82 ZXT
I've never done a swap but, about a year ago I looked into it. The price was still alittle high for me. What I did do was swap to some H-4 bulbs, rewire for more power and upgrade to 90/130 watt Xenon bulbs. You talk about a night and day difference.(no pun intended) Huge upgrade for about 130 bucks and a little time. Still not HID's but, much better. One thing that I found at the time was that the HID's only had one bulb for either low beam or high beam but, not both like our lights are supposed to have. There may be such a thing now but, like I said this was over a year ago. Let us know if you find anything real good. I would still like to upgrade mine to HID's if I found the right parts at thwe right price.
fl327
not a real hid, but i run those sylvania HID look headlights with relays, and to me they are bright as heck.
BLKMGK
I did HID on the Supra. The light is MUCH brighter but it's also more directed. The LENS make a BIG difference as tohow well it will come out. I'm not sure a generic H4 replacement would be the best way to go. H4 lenses aren't like projector lenses where a bulb can be easily swapped in and get decent lighting. Lots to learn about HID but if you do it I'd stick to 4200K Phillips systems. Hotter values only give you funky colors and less light. http://clublexus.com/Information/Tech%20Tips/General/HID/hid.html You can also search for HID on Supraforums.com and find more than one thread discussing it. I've not yet had time to better adjust my lights - right now I've got a dark area in the middle and some hotspots out front. The cutoff is very sharp with the exception of an aberration up high on the left side - a result of the Supra lens it seems. The bulbs I bought were supposed to eliminate that abberation - they lied. Guest Philanthr0py
Catz Zeta system is pretty good, it's a cheaper version of "True HID" but it still has a ballast to power the the bulbs. I've seen these in person and they are pretty dang bright, a lot brighter than the Xenon's. You can get them on Ebay for about $150 give or take. jaime240z
Cool feedback, guys. I also did the basic H4 swap on my 240z. They were brighter right off the bat, but I never got around to installing the relays. I'm sure that would have helped get more juice to the lamps. I just put standard halogens back in and, well, they suck! The H4 lamps that I bought are 7" round with a 2.5" projector lens. Not the typical reflector type lens. I want to put them back in, with relays, and high powered Xenon bulbs. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a brand for the HID conversion. The ones I'm looking at come with Hella parts and your choice of bulb ratings (5200K, 7000K, etc.) I think I'll get them in a few months. I post the results. Until then I've got some wiring to do. BLKMGK
Read the link. OSRAM and Phillips are OEM providers of this stuff. NO OEM vehicle comes with a hotter color temp than 4200K - there's a reason for that. Do the relays first, if lighting QUALITY is what you're after that may be all you need to do in order to get good light. The Sylvania SilverStar bulbs are supposed to burn at 4000K and should be closest to HID quality - DOT legal. I've got a set of these for my high beams but haven't installed them yet, I'll try to post back when I do. I've heard good things about them...
