Making Lash pads question?

I have friend who teaches machine shop at the local tech school. He said he could make lash pads for me.

1. Do I need the concave bottom to sit on top of the retainer or can it be flat ?

2. I assume I need to use harden steel stock ?

thanks

They can be flat on the bottom. Most of the aftermarket ones are and are ground to thickness.

They need to be hardened to 50-53RC. Hardness needs to be tightly controlled.

Yep, I've made some. It's cheaper to buy them.

Is it a crazy idea to make thin round shims of various thickness to place under the very plentiful stock lask pads to raise them to the needed height? Surely (don't call me Shirley) this would be a cheaper way to go.

Obviously you might need nice tall retainers to make sure there are no escapees....
