Fuel Cells, Question for ya...

Recommended Posts

Just wondering i need to replace my tank and was thinking of going with a fuel cell. Do they make one that will fit in the spare tire well. Reason asking i dont want to cut the tire well out, but i do need a new fuel tank that i can adapt for my z. Or any suggestions please please reply...

Thanks

I would hazard a guess that it would have to be prohibitively small for it to fit "in" the well. Framing would have to be erected, and it most likely would extend above the back shelf at least 5" or 6". Now if you can make a square peg fit in a round hole.....

Just drill out the welds .Take out the well drop in a 10 gallon cell . Weld in a cover plate .I used a triangle eng 10 gal cell . works well .have pics if you would like too see .

A few of mine

Mine was a Triangle aluminum cell w/foam and sender. 10gallon I think. It's sprung two leaks so far for no aparent reason - not on seams either icon_sad.gif The tire well was removed, two rails welded in with angle iron, tabs welded to cell, cell bolted in. Fill is through a sheet steel cover that has a little cupola "house". If th ecell had been set lower rear fill would've been possible through the license tag but might have hit parking blocks.

In hindsight I think the fuel cell Mikelly has with a bladder and steel outer shell would've been better. It holds MUCH more fuel too I think. icon_rolleyes.gif Live and learn I guess.

Basically they're just baffled and have larger lines than your standard fuel tank. In the strictest sense, a fuel cell has a foam in it which slows down the leakage of fuel in the case of an accident. At least thats what I was told. They are usually made from thick plastic or aluminum and often will be surround by a 'safe' that keeps it further protected from damage in an accident.

Cell was mounted by a professional chassis shop. No stress on th ecell, it's suspended by "ears" that are mounted to pieces of angle iron welded to what looks like a frame member above the rear and to a back bulkhead that was stock in the car. I can undo 4 bolts, remove the steel cover, and lift the cell out. Short of running straps under the silly thing I'm not sure how else it could've been mounted. Note that the leaks both occured on th ebotton, that there were no marks on th ecell, and that these leaks were in the middle of the tank nowhere near a weld. Was like the gas was eating through the cell or something...

P.S. Cerebrus, look for a software package named PhotImpact. It allows you to easily shrink down pics. Mine go from over a meg to 20K or so - those are the pics on my WEB site. Niiiice package that Pete told me about icon_smile.gif

I can't recall exactly how it was supposed to be mounted. I think it has ears on it somewhere "stock" but I don't quite recall. However long after it leaked it did start "oil canning". The top has bulged up and has to be pushed down like an oil can to close the filler. Serious PITA that I think happened during a brief time while it was sealed with a small amount of gas in it. NEVER do that icon_rolleyes.gif Note that it wasn't doing this when it started leaking but long after. IMO if I had to do it again I'd use the cell Mikelly has with the steel safe -much safer IMO and it holds more (grr). Next time!

Hey Ron, I installed a plastic fuel cell from Summit, 16 gallons with a sender built in. About $150. if I remember correctly. No problems with it so far. I installed it in the rear on top of the spare tire well with only the sump hanging down. Then I built an aluminum "trunk" over it. The top of the "trunk" lifts up when I lift the hatch kind of like the covers in hatchback cars like Camaros, etc..

This type of installation eliminates most of the rear storage space which I don't need anyway. The cool thing is that there is alot of room for dual exhaust to go straight back now.

It should be noted that not all fuel cells have foam in them. Summit, for example, sells them with or without foam. The two purposes of foam is to eliminate fuel slosh, and more importantly, to stop vaporization in the event of an accident. Fuel in liquid form will not explode, but when vaporized in an impact it becomes a bomb. (ala Pinto)
