slanting an engine to fit

what (if any) considerations need to be made when slanting an engine ( <15*)? i know its not that big of a deal, b/c all of the 3 series bmw's have their engines slanted.

my thinking is that i want to do a 70 Z with either a new 5.7 hemi, or a TT 4.2 liter vortec...i like straight sixes cuz theyre soo smooth, and i like engines that can rev upwards of 7000 rpm.

anyway, im not sure which id rather do, but if slanting is not a big deal, i may go with the TT4.2.

any takers on which would be preferred?

Slanting the engine will require mods to the oil pump pickup for whatever new angle in addition to bellhousing mods. The 4.2 is interesting in that it is large displacment and crossflow, but I think you are barking up the wrong tree. It qualifies as a swap candidate IMO only because you might find lots of them cheap in the boneyard. No need to re-invent the wheel here. For a turbo inliner, I would do a skyline or supra motor rather than the chebbie SUV powerplant. Custom cams, etc. would eat your lunch. Chrysler had a REALLY tilted engine, the slant six, in the 60's and 70's and it was as reliable as a hammer.Once you have an L6 out on a stand, you realize it is slightly tilted as well. One of the L6 books (either hot rodding or how to race, I forget) has a picture of a IMSA GTU ZX motor that has been tilted over quite a bit.

That Cheby 4.2 has been discussed several time on this site. You are going to have bigger problems then engine height should you try to use it. (Like no manual tranmission, computer controlled variable valve timing, a front oil sump and the front transaxel having something to do with the oil pan). Besides, the engine hasn't been around that long so I would be suprised if the boneyards were full of cheap engines.

Much better off with a SBC :D:D
