Turbo options

If you could choose any turbo, for a vg30t engine, what would it be?

Not using the OE manifolds opens the possibility of using any turbo I want, any brand, any configuration, etc, etc.

Does any 1 brand have advantages over other brands? (I know a guy who's porch[sic] got keyed because he had a KKK turbocharger sticker on it) Garrett? Mitsubishi? KKK? IHI?

I'm only familiar with Garrett stuff and am just wondering about other choices.

Yeah, I dunno about spending $600 or so on a BB turbo. That's a real nice set of tires and a pair of cams too!

I just meant in general, is one brand generally regarded as better is some random aspect than others? More reliable? Cheaper? etc, etc.

edit: I mean an EXTRA $600 on BB option, not $600 total of course.

I'm not too familiar with the other types other than Garrett myself. But I'd probably suggest something around a T04, or a T3/T04 hybrid. Try checking out this site for their turbo calculator:

I hope that helps you out.

My stock GN turbo is now up for sale. Makes the stock VG30T turbo look puny. Nice and tight, ported and polished compressor and adjustable wastegate rod. It is a Garrett, if you are interested in brand name.

Went 11.50@117.24 with it.

My limited experience with turbos was primarily with Garrets, but I did do sa tone of research a few years back and the T3/T04 Hybrid was the smack back then... I'd look into those, and the BIGGEST intercooler you can find... Guy I know had a 240Z with a Mazda RX7 2nd generation turbo motor in it with a Garrett T3/T04 with a Mack Truck intercooler stuffed in it... Thing was scary fast. By far the fastest accelerating car I have ever watched at an autoX! That creation was another beast from the ZDr. folks in Roanoke, VA!

I heard a lot of good stuff about the Garetts. I think HKS uses them too. I'd recommend a hybrid for good response and top end power.

Like someone mentioned, a big intercooler is

absolutely necessary. I prefer front mount

over the water cooled units. I think Spearco

has some kind of sizing tips for different

applications, you dont want to go too big,

because of pressure drop. Friends who have used Spearcos say their fin designs arent as

efficient as the Apex type but are a couple

of hundred cheaper...your choice.

I would also go with an adjustable external

wastegate but you could alwasy put washers under the spring of the internal wastegate

types too. You could also get the turbine wheel of a stock turbo trimmed to the specs

of an expensive aftermarket turbo.

I used a t3/t4e garrett turbo on my L6. I think it's more important to get a reputable shop (Majestic Turbo, etc.) to build one to your specs rather than looking for the best brand of turbo. I had one built that was water cooled for $575 plus $150 for an external wastegate.

My future turbo IS (yes, I got it) a PTE-51. I got it Friday night, slapped it on and ran today. Major spoolup problems at the line. According to my data logger, I did not get full boost until 3+ secs into the run, but still got it to run 11.53 @ 120.51mph eek.gif 60' was horrible, 1/8 ET was slower but 98+mph. I suspect the problem is this custom 3" wastegate elbow and the wastegate puck is not properly aligned with the wastegate hole in the turbine housing causing bleedoff.

Once I get it fixed, I should be running 10.90s @ 120+++ with a little more boost and tuning. That might be a little while because I blew an oil line or the oil pump and dropped 1.5 qts of oil on the track redface.gif The entire engine is covered in oil. Normal oil pressure, no oil in water or vice-versa, no overheating. All feels OK but just a little rough. This might be an excuse to pull it and freshen up the bottom end in anticipation of 450hp biggrin.gif

So much for my adventure. The stock turbo I just took off is a T3 but huge by import standards. I do not know the specs, but to give you some idea, some turboZs hog out their compressor and stuff GN wheels in them. I am asking $275 complete with the wastegate housing and adjustable wastegate rod.

If you are interested I will snap some pics and post them. It is "pretty", biggrin.gif

I think I am going to have to agree with Arif, the maps are a guide . The rael power and drivability are from trial and error on the dyno, and shop experience . Since we can't try turbo's on like a pair of pant's, check and see what others with good sucess are running . HKS and Greddy are Garrett cores I think .

I think the T04E/T3 57 or 62mm wheel with the stage III turbine and .63 A/R would be a nice street setup and would get you into the 11's in 1/4 mile .

After studying turbo's for a long time compressor maps aren't going to make alot of difference as long as the turbo is not over driven, it doen't surge, and the effeciency doen't drop below 60 percent . The difference in air temp between a 70% eff and 60% is not that much, a big intercooler will chill it anyways . A Jim Wolf package is good lot's of research, a real good way to go!!

I recently learned that on big turbo they use a small A/R ratio to spool up turbo quickly, and then use a big wastgate to dump excess backpressure . If you tried this with a small internal wastegate, you would choke high rpm and load in your motor .
