I assume one of the pictures is correct and the other incorrect?? I don’t think the early models had these but they were on my 280z and I forget which direction they were flipped. I've seen it proposed that they are meant to stop engine movement if the car gets hit from behind or hits something. Seems more like they might be meant for ease of engine removal and replacement.
