Next quarter we get to rebuild the engine of our choice at school (New England Tech.) I'm looking to get a 280Z that i can throw a 350+ into. Any recomendations? I had thought of a Ford 351-C or W, a LT1 or LS1, the L28 with the 3100cc kit from motorsport, or something with the L6but i dont kow much about those. thanks fo your help!

If this is for a pure learing experience, do the L28 since you are unfamiliar with them. If this is going to be a high HP conversion project to be played with after the class is over, go V8. LT1 or LS1 would probably be better to learn about since the technology is newer and you'll get more knowledge carry over for other newer engines.

just my 2c worth.

thanks for your help tim! this is gonn be a project high hp car for me so i guess the ls1 or lt1 it is. does the jtr kit work with these motors, i was under the impression it only worked with older Chevy SB's. thanks again!

Like Zgimp said, LT1 works fine with the JTR conversion, and with no distributor in the rear, there is no need to modify hood latch. Were it me, and I was looking to learn the most and had access to complete machine services, I would build the 3.1 stroker motor. WAY more to be learned that way vs. "another" SBC rebuild. Get an N47 head off a Maxima to go NA or the turbo N47 and some dished pistons to go 3.1 turbo. WooHoo! One of the big drawbacks to the 3.1 is all of the machine work and assembly, but if you have the opportunity to get it pro bono, go for it!

Man, I'm liking this thread a whole lot, because all of this advice is really good! icon_smile.gif

I personally would build a big cubic inch (420 or 426) SBC V8 and get my education of building a motor on that. However, the 3.1L stroker is a neat way to go too. To me there is something more car crafty about going with a V8 and making that fit into the chassis. Plus, I can guarantee it'll be one fast mother when you are finished icon_eek.gif

maverick,

the lt-1 works with the jtr kit, the ls1 takes a lot of fab work, but can be done. If you want simplicity, go with the lt-1. Also, there are more trans choices with the LT, as the ls is a different botl pattern, that is only a couple of years old.

Hope this helps,

Kris

I rebuilt my L26, and i helped the guy that did all the machining.. and man that thing is fun to play with... just shave the head a tad more, get the calculator out and the measuring tools... hoan the cylinders for the oversized pistons... lots of fun, just regreting not doing the L28... damn dad not letting me change engines YET, will rebuild a Rb25det soon more fun for me.. hehe
