Guest steven96
Went to a shop today to figure out what was wrong with my 83 turbo. It doesnt really want to go over 3k rpms and it has big power loss especially when trying to go over into positive boost. If you do it slowly sometimes it will get 4 psi. The guy said my wastegate was bad and since its internal I need a new turbo. Anybody have any thoughts that can help me out. Like does that sound like the problem? If I left anything out let me know thanks. Didnt know the wastegates went out that often. Steven
inZane 240
I am fairly certian all you have to do is replace the faulty wastegate parts. The entire turbo assembly does not need to be replaced. Hopefully someone can provide you with the details.
Lockjaw
You may have a bad wastegate actuator, although I have not seen one of those. You could also have a cracked or disconnected vacuum line from the turbo to the actuator. Where are you located? You need to find someone who knows what they are doing. Sounds like that shop is trying to pull one over on you to me.
Guest Ian turbo240
The shop may not be "pulling one over on you". I have seen internal w/g's actually melt causing boost loss. Another thing that can happen is the turbine housing cracks, which can lead to the same problem. I wouldn't completely discount this theory. However, it is rare. Are you going by the stock boost gauge or an aftermarket one? If you're only seeing 4psi, then many other problems could cause this. I'd look at some other scenerios before replacing the turbo. Guest steven96
IM located in bakersfield and they are a japenese vehicle specialist and one of the guys owns a Z. he doesnt do much with the engine and turbo stuff tho. Im still checkin some other stuff but i think hes right because she does have 200k miles and i do drive her hard. Maybe this is good time to go hyrbid or something. Is changing the turbo that hard? Seems like it can be done in less than a day with everything by your side. thanks for anymore ideas.
Guest steven96
i am going with the a sunpro boost gauge that doesnt seem to be perfect but generally its alright. The Wastegates are internal on the stock T3s right??
Lockjaw
Yes the waste gates are internal. If you get a hybrid, you are going to have to fab up the down pipe and the intake plumbing. The other option is to send your turbo off and have it upgraded, and then it would be a bolt on affair.
Z-Gad
To get another opinion, you may want to take it to a local Diesel shop for a second opinion if you don't have a turbo shop in your area. Although they don't usually do performance turbos, they are well versed in turbos in general.
