aarang
Has anyone heard of using the 420cc fuel injectors for an early Mercedes 450SL on a turbo Z? They look identical and are only $50 ea brand new. I would like to try these on my turbo Z, but I can't return them if I buy them. Thanks
opie
Pretty sure it's done all the time. Search the topic in this forum.
SleeperZ
The question remaining is... Can your ECU handle it? Factory ECU - not without radical changes. Stand-alone ECU - easy.
randy 77zt
you need a programmable efi system.when the efi fires the injector its the milliseconds of ON time and the flow rate of the injector itself that controls the amount of fuel.if you installed bigger injectors and the stock ecm opened them for the same amount of time that stock injectors were opened you would be running rich at idle.playing around with stock efi is a waste of time -you will never get it 100% correct even if you do mods to it.i drive late model cars all day at work and i expect perfect driveability from my own cars.blowing extra fuel out the tail pipe because of poor programming doesnt cut it.my z is not a garage queen.it gets used for a work car and gets used at the race track.but since i work on new cars i expect a car that can be used for any trips i want 24 hours a day. Tony240ZT
On the other side of the spectrum I've used them in my L24 turbo setup, ran pretty rich, so I traded ScottyMitz for his 370cc/min injectors. I'm pretty sure he's running in the 12's for the 1/4 mile with his setup. Before he swapped to the larger injectors and larger turbo he ran a high 12, and after the rebuild and parts the car is faster. The AFM has to be tightened down pretty good, not really healthy for the car. Scotty is letting some un-metered air in after the AFM to help. From what I've heard it's working really well. I'm working on something to rid of the restriction. 370cc/min injectors aren't too bad of a comprimise.
aarang
Thanks for the replys. What are the 370cc injectors from? I will eventually be going to the SDS FI setup, so I'll wait to use the 420cc injectors at that time. Will the 370cc injectors work good with the stock ECU? I'm new to having a turbo Z, so any input is appreciated.
opie
The 370cc works fine with the stock setup if you tightned the AFM a little. I have a set of 6 for 100+shipping. They are usually pulled from an XR4Ti Merkur or possibly some Mustang SVOs/Turbo Tbird/Cougar. Doug.
aarang
Are they a direct bolt in or is there some modification involved?
opie
370cc injectors are not a direct drop in, but they are close. The upper plastic has to be trimmed back about 1/8":enough to get a small clamp on it. I think ScottieGNZ has an article on his page. Doug.
