Z_Dust
My manual transmision is making some high hissing sound. It does it on first gear and not as loud on second gear. I drained and replaced the fluid and still no good. I've been told it's the sichros and maybe even the gears. Any opinion on this. how much should I pay to have this fix. I would just take the transmision to the shop and then mount it myself. Hopefully this might save me some $$$ The trans is a 79 mounted on a 77z
fl327
throw it in the gutter, and go buy another, im not sure what your trans is doing, but sounds from the gears is never good.
Z_Dust
Exactly what I was thinking. I was given a quote to get it rebuilt (new gears and all) for about $900.00. I think it's crazy
fl327
900.00 is too much. a trans from one of those import places if they still have them is like 400.00 with a warranty, or 100.00 from the yard.
Guest De Schmaydee
....i dont think $900 is way outta the park for a "remanufactered" tranny.....seems to be about what most places charge to have it "completely" redone......s
fl327
ive been quoted 850.00 before, which yeah its an ok price, but you can grab em from your local yard for 100.00, and theres a lot of them to be had.
Guest Anonymous
Like Len suggested "YARD"... you can pick em up for $100 to $200 used and do not over look the trannys from the 620 pickups or cars. The pickups have slightly lower first and second gears and make that Z rear squat and front end to go uP like a horny goat.
Guest 240hybrid
$900.00 I was quoted $600.00 for a rebuild of my 78 280z 5 speed. Try that $400.00 one with 1 year warranty like Len recommended looking into. I dont know about you but I wouldn't want to spend $900.00 for a rebuild. Z_Dust
Tomahawk z do not over look the trannys from the 620 pickups or cars. Can you provide me with a bit more info on the trannys from 620 pickup and cars. What year will fit on my 77z. I wouldn't know what a 620 is if it runs me over. Thanks
Guest Anonymous
ZDust A 620 was the standard models of Pickups from 1973 to 1979..1977 and later had the 5 speeds with the L20 B engine (the L6's little brother minus 2 cylinders. It seems that the 1980-81 (82?) pickups had the L20 B engine also. You are looking for cars and pickups that had the L overhead cam 4 cylinder after 1973 with the aluminum valve cover like the Z but shorter in length..Just about all these trannys will bolt up to the Z car. There maybe some debate if the car and pickup trannys are weaker. I believe they are the same materials as the Z tranny with different gearing in the lower first two gears and 3rd, 4th and 5th about the same. The 78 and later may prove to be better trannys or the ones that survived but I had a 77 five speed with 250,000 miles on it with no problems. Some of the initial 5 speeds bit the dust and failed..but the rest were survivors.
Guest Anonymous
Hey, the trans. has to come out anyway, so you do it and learn something. The swishing sound is likely the synchronizer alright, when that bad it will have noticeable slop as compared to the other syncs. in there. Maby you will want to replace it (Unless you notice some other thing going bad also). This is the kicks of turning wrenches to me, getting in there and fixing it more than just swapping the whole thing, what is that? In the first place, who says you going to get a good tranny from a junkyard anyway? You might get worse than you got now unless you open it up for a good look. Why chance possible extra labors on a guarantee from a junk yard? They don't care, "If the dirty bitch don't work, bring it back and we give you another one just like it" they say!.....LOL.
