Getting gaskets to actually seal

Recommended Posts

I've assembled a few motors over the years, but with V8's I've always had a problem with oil weeping/leaking and ultimately making a big old mess. Do any of the old hands around here have any suggestions for sealing, especially the pan and valve cover gaskets? I'm hoping to be able to actually proudly open the hood once in a while, when this thing is finally rolling.

Coincidentally I asked about this same question in the beginning of the month. Search for "sealant recommendation" for the thread. To give you the short answer, GM makes a seriously toxic silicone sealer that they use in the factory for engine assembly. Get it from a GM parts counter under #12346192. I have used it, but haven't fired the engine yet to test it out.

For the one peice gaskets try summit racing if you want to use the four peice just hammer the bolt holes flat ( rap them with a small hammer on the gasket flange side to remove any distortion caused by over tightening) then install your gasket using the before mentioned sealer and tighen the bolt to 120" lbs making sure to hit each bolt 3 times you will have no leaks!!!
