question for grumpyvette or anyone else??

Im sorry to ask so many questions but this is all really new to me. I need to know what transmissions I can run with a 96-98 vortec motor? I am looking for a way to get off cheaper and still have a good amount of reliability and power. Stock the engine has 250HP at the rear so I figure about 310 at the flywheel? I am looking to add a cam and run a carb intake. Calling around tells me that I can find one with about 50K miles for around $1000, is this good?

 

1. Will the T5 trans work with the newer motors

 

2. If I decide on the T-56 will I still have to buy an adaptor kit or will it just bolt up?

 

3. Also, just in case I get fed up and decide to just go with an automatic will the 700r4 work with the vortec?

personally I would never have run anything but a m-22 muncie in the old days but the engineering has advanced so far in the last few years that theres no reason at all not to take advantage of the 700r4 with a lock-up converter from a wrecked vette. not only does the torque converter and low first gearing add to your launch from a standing start the overdrive ratio allows great top speed with lower engine rpms and an auto provides a good level of engine over rev control thats not available useing a manual trans.look at the ratios,and other info,PLUS THE 700r4 is much cheaper on average to install, rebuild, and purchase than a manual 5 speed trans and they are stronger on average too.(yes they bolt up to vortec v-8 engines)

Thanks for the info. Im just not sure I want to go with a auto but the idea is growing on me. Do only certain 700R4s have a lock up converter? What do I need to look for. Surely, I dont have to find a corvette?

 

Thanks again for all your help and by the way Im an engineer also, were you ME, EE, Chem E or IE?

yeah you should be able to find them at any local yard. Stay away from I believe it's pre 86 or 87. THose are supposedly not built as good.

I am not sure of your question about how to activate a lockup converter to stay in (4th) overdrive in a non computer car?? The October 2001 Chevy High Performance magazine had an article on how to electrical wire an overdrive transmisssion (700R4) with a Hobbs pressure switch to complete an electrical circuit that activates a solenoid in the transmission to apply the torque converter lockup when the transmission shifts into overdrive.The proceedure did not look that complicted and could even be done with the transmission installed in the car . The article cited Auto Rite Transmission as as a source. www.auto-rite.com in California Phone 818/215-9696> I plan on following the article instructions and doing the proceedure on a 2004R overdrive trans for my project car. You basically flip a dash board switch to lock the transmission in overdrive when you are cruising at speed down the highway to save big on fuel costs

I think if I did go with the 700R4 I would have to figure out how to install conputer control. If grumpyvette would has a link to that information that would be great! 2thumbs.gif I think it would be a pain to flip a switch every time I shift into 4th. I have trouble remembering to turn on the wippers when its raining and the lights at night! :rolleyes:

Thanks grumpy, I just keep going around and around on this one. What do you think of the 200R4 with a lock up? I am been reading a lot about it. Its not as fat and uses less ponies to turn! I figure that Ill be making over 350HP so Im not sure. Also, I really had my heart set on a manual but it just seems like so much of a hassle!! :( I would love to go with the T-5 or T-56. I was really hoping that the T-56 installation would be easier for the vortec engine. Oh well :(:(:(

What do you think of the 200R4 with a lock up?
I plan on using the 200 4R. From what I've been told by the performance tranny guys, the 200 can be built to take as much hp as the 700, around 600hp or so. Maybe Keith will chime in here since he does the tranny thang for a living.

and no the 200r4 will be slightly weaker than the 700r4 simply because some of the major parts are smaller. and theres plenty of tranny shops that will tell you they can build a 700r4 to handle 600ft lbs of torque or a 200r4 to handle 500 ft lbs of torque (but ask them for how many full power 1/4 mile passes they guarantee in writeing and watch them squirm around the answer!)and after you smoke the tranny with just a 450 ft lb engine see how many will stand behind their work and rebuild it for free! best advise is get a huge tranny cooler and everything guaranteed in writeing!! AND CHECK THE FINE PRINT FOR "IF YOU RACED IT ITS NOT COVERED EXCLUSIONS"

ANYPLACE THAT TELLS YOU THEY CAN BUILD YOU A HEAVY DUTY RACING TRANSMISSIOM BUT WON,T GUARANTEE THEIR WORK FOR A YEAR IS (B.S.ING) YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY.

I'm running a 700r4 in my datsun and I hate it!

If your in fourth gear at lets say about 120 mph. (crusing) and you decide you want to go faster, Once you floor it, the tranny will down shift into 3rd automatically, and you will be tacking around 8000 rpm WOW!

 

So the overdrive kicks into 4th by it self, A tranny shop gave me a little 1 wire switch that I wired into the valve body. (pice of cake)

Y2K,

Thats the way I have mine wired.

It does not do automatic shift for mine as far as down shifts.

It will upshift but NOT down shift at WOT at any speed or gear.

 

I love my 700R4!!!

Does it love me? So far!!!
