My car sounds like a jackhammer!

Recommended Posts

I let my bro borrow the car last weekend and he said he ran over a pallet that fell off the back of some pickup in front of him. He ran over it at about 40mph, and we had to limp the car home. I noticed that for every rotation of the driveshaft or wheels maybe, there was this clunk sound... The faster I go, the faster and louder the clunk. Sounds like a jack hammer at 25 mph. What's weird is that going up a hill or turning left, the noise wasn't as bad or would disappear a little. Going right or downhill, the noise got unbearably loud. I haven't had a chance to check the car out yet, but my thoughts are these:

1. a bad carrier bearing 2. bent driveshaft 3. broken or bent axle?

Anyone else have any ideas or suggestions or comments for fixes? My Z is 82ZXT a/t. Thanks for any help.

I once hit debris in the road and it stuck my transmission, it pushed the metal inspection pan that covered the torque converter (automatic) into the converter itself, you might check that this isnt the case... other then that, where exactly did it hit, and did it get hung up under the car? could be a bent front/rear axel or hrmm...

u might jack up the rear on stands and spin the tires see if its wopped... just a few ideas.

The thing that was run over was one of those wooden pallet things that forklifts use to stack stuff on top of, and what people use for bonfire wood. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try to check the car out tomorrow, the crate as far as I know didn't get hung up on the car, although it bent my rear crossmember a bit. Nothing else that I could see that night.

Well, I would put my money on a damaged/loose universal, either at the driveshaft or the rearend because of your description of how thumping lessened when turning one direction (Rearend spider gear effect perhaps). Then we have the aggrivation of going downhill (No load drivetrain). Since all americans are notorious liars (even to themselves), I would get under there and analize just exactly what it was that passed beneath your car. Probably a loose manhole cover! heh.

"ran over a pallet that fell off the back of some pickup " sounds "made-up" to me. More likely he was out there slamming the gears like a crazy maniac... and its a drivline slapping aroud or a halfshaft. could be just loose... who knows.. quit typing and jack it up..haha
