Guest 280steveX
i hav a 280ZX n/a...i wanna go turbo. i hav heard statements about just buying the turbo motor & install it. but if the CR is 8.X:1 & the ZXturbo is 7.X:1, all modern engines use 8.X:1 for turbos...why can't i use my orig. motor & put a turbo header, custom FMIC & rebuild the fuel system + turbo ECU? Honda guys do it?
SleeperZ
Go ahead, you can do it with a ZX engine (8.3:1), but with a factory turbo motor that is more durable available, most people go with that.
Guest eric-z
I think you need the 280zx turbo distributor too, turbo cam might be nice to have too.
Guest Zcarsmakemyheadhurt
You can boost the stock motor but I would change or be ready to change the factory head gasket. The best way to get away with it is by spending the money on a fuel computer. A programable unit will alow for tuning of the igntion time and fuel maps and allow y1ou to run a larger injector, keep every thing safe. You spend around $1,350.00 any way you slice it but it will be the best money you have spent.
Lockjaw
You can turbocharge the ZX engine, but you should probably run the turbo electronics at minimum, and you will have to change the distributor drive shaft too. Be careful with boosting it to much though, the ZX engine does not have a piston designed for boosted environments. The cams are also different, and you need one with a B, J or M stamped on the back. J is 81-82 manual, B is 81-82 auto, and M is 83 manual and auto. Any will work. I have the B cam and like it, but could not locate a J cam or I would have tried it just to see if there was a difference. I have seen the specs and they are all pretty much the same. You need larger then stock(turbo) injectors to run over about 11 or 12 psi, and a good fuel pump. I would use the factory nissan headgasket if you swap heads, or you can spend the money on an HKS one if you like.
