utvolman99
Well, I am about to head out to the bank to buy a money order to pay for my new ebay heads. They are Dart Iron Eagle heads with the 64cc combustion chambers, 215cc intake runners and 2.05/160 valves! Now all I have to do is build my 350 around them. I will be mainly driving the car on the street. I am also not looking to spend a ton of money. I am going to use a comp cams Xtreme cam kit (not sure which one yet) and an automatic trans. Any suggestions would be welcome!
utvolman99
Grumpy, I pretty much have a clean slate to work with. The car is a 73 240 and the engine is a 1969 350. I have yet to select a rear end ratio but am leaning towards 3.7. I can not afford a T-56 so I guess I will be going with an automatic but have not yet decided between the 700R4 or the 200R4, I do want to use a stock stall speed. For a cam I think I will be running an Xtreme energy 268H but am not sure. So pretty much all I have at this point is the car an engine and the Dart heads. I will be mainly driving the car on the street. I have thought about going with a larger cam to raise my power band to keep from obliterating my tires on take off (especially if I go with the 700R4). Any help would be great!
grumpyvette
ok those heads need to breath and your not pulling all that much weight and that 3.73 rear gear is a great choice with a stock stall speed 700r4 trans so get a super victor intake #2925(if it will fit under your hood, a victor jr will work ok and is a little shorter but gives up some high rpm power )but keep the carb about 650 cfm for good response the matching cam would be the xe274 (the xe268 will work fine too its probably a better street cam but youll get a higher and broader torque curve with the xe274 at the expense of a rougher idle and keep your compression at about 9.4/1 (you need a 12cc dish piston with those small chamber heads) and those heads will really like 1 3/4" HEADERS IF YOU CAN GET THEM TO FIT,now if your running stock flat top pistons your compression will be slightly higher(about 10/1)(something the xe274 will help with because of a larger overlap that drains of some low rpm compression) look here http://cochise.uia.net/pkelley2/crc.htm that combo will get you a great street torque range and power of about 410hp/407 ft lbs more than enough to embasass the new vettes and vipers in that light car but still a good daily driver on high test fuel. grumpyvette
post everything about your engine and car you can think off and we will be glad to help(weight, gearing, trans, engine size, cpr, headers, intake , ETC.)
V8ZRACER260Z
Congrats on your purchase! I am running the Dart 215's also. You will love them! I am running the comp cams Xtreme Energy 294 cam split duration 519/523 lift. I would suggest a smaller cam with an automatic, but Grumpyvette knows MUCH more than me on parts selection!! The one I use has a very noticble lope. I mainly chose this cam & heads to bring my powerband up from idle-5500 Rpm to 2800-7000 Rpm. This to me keeps the car driveable at low rpms and a BLAST when you come up on 3000rpms. With my old set up the torque was breaking every part you could think of. A good way of finding those weak links in the driveline, but not a reliable daily driver.
Guest Anonymous
Good starting point. My motor has 76 cc heads ported to the max. 2.02 with .600 lift springs pop up trw forged pistons .150, xe284 cam, 1.5 roller rockers and crappy summit shorties with a crappy torker intake to a 700 dbl pumper hooked to a built turbo 350 b&m 3000 stall convertor I ran my fastest time on 87 octane fuel with no sign of pinging, thats with a total of 40 degrees @ 3000 rpm I would think if you build your motor around the heads It would be nice with flat top pistons(there are tons out there) if your not going to nos it you can get away with cast pistons. the xe284 cam isn't that lopey so I would at least use it, unless your using the stock torque convertor then the xe274 would be best. I wish i went to the xe294 the victor junior is the best all around intake for speed but if you want to regain really good drivability the rpm airgap produces good power to 6000 remember rpm kills bottom ends not power. the 650 dblpumper works great. remember that motorsport auto has 1 3/4" long tube headers I'm saving my money up for those and a victor junior. My heads are ported for 1 3/4" headers and I have 1 1/2" the gasket almost doesn't seal my bad lose a lot of horse power obstucting your exaust ports. oh well soon enough
