stereo set-ups/speaker placement

i'm getting ready to dump my tax return into my early 74 260. one of the things on my to do list is add a nice stereo. has anyone come up with better/other speaker placement than door panels/rear deck? security is an issue- i really like an inconspicuous look. i see no need to point out that i have easily pawned, high dollar items in the car. any input is appreciated. thanks.

Custom made kickpanel and shock tower pods with a good head unit would be adequate. If you want more serious sound add a couple amps and get a sub-woofer box made (or two) that will fit behind the shock towers (1 on each side)....

Just my suggestion. It really all depends on how much you want to spend. I've regularly usually have about 4 grand in stereo equipment in my cars. But, thats just my thing.

My doors were already cut for 4" speakers, so I went back with another set. I drilled the spot rivets out of the spare tire hold down and flipped the tire over. This increased the space enough to put a free air 8 in a board cut to the shape of the floor under the carpet. The speaker grill was recessed to be flush with the top of the board, then the carpet put back over it. This works well for me, and is very stealthy!
