Guest quatra
WHICH IS BETTER FOR SOME ONES FIRST 240 CONVERSION A CRATE MOTOR OR USED ENGINE?
denny411
It all depends on finances and what your primary use is. I personally would rather build from scratch rather than buy a crate engine. But I understand that most people don`t have the tools or facilities available to do everything themselves. I would suggest finding a donor car with a sound drivtrain and swapping it in. Then find another block and build one from scratch as you get the funds and scout bargains. This let`s you drive your hybrid and have everything set up while you build a stronger more durable engine to fit your end goals.
Guest sb400z
Just buy a 1000+ horsepower supercharged crate motor and make sure you have a good life insurance plan... Or, you could be sensible and do what denny411 said. I'd do the former, but then again, i'm 20 and invincible... and have a 400 from a 76 van. Close to stock (crane 272h cam, holley 750 mech secondaried, and weiand dual plane), rebuilt less than 6k ago and is very fun. Good luck with whatever you choose. Phantom
I opted for a used engine with only 3,400 miles. Discount for only 3,400 miles was too good to pass up.
Tim240z
One thing to keep in mind, well 2 actually: 1: It can be difficult to beat the price on a crate motor by building one yourself. Crate motors have become very reasonably priced, and have good quality parts (depending on vendor) 2: You get a warranty on a crate motor. Look at Scoggin Dickey parts center or Jim Pace etc.... The ONLY reasons to build yourself would be if you want a very specific build spec (performance goals that aren't offered as a crate), or to be able to say,"Yeah, I built that!!"
